00:00Thomas, the tank engine, had been working in the coalyards all day.
00:06The little blue engine was covered in coal dust.
00:08"'We can't clean you up tonight, Thomas,' said his driver.
00:11"'There's a problem with the hosepipe.'
00:13"'Bother,' said Thomas.
00:15"'A bath would make me feel much better.
00:17The others are sure to say I look silly.'"
00:19But the engines were too busy arguing to notice Thomas.
00:24James was talking loudest of all.
00:25"'I deserve a new coat of paint.
00:27The Fat Controller says I'm the pride of the line, and—'
00:30"'Rubbish!' huffed Henry.
00:32"'We're all the pride of the line.'"
00:33"'It's been like this all day,' confided Percy to Thomas.
00:37"'James is getting a new coat of paint and won't stop boasting about it.'"
00:41"'Why, James, I'm the one who needs a new coat.
00:44Look at me!'
00:45"'I'd rather not,' retorted James.
00:47"'You're not a pleasant sight and wouldn't understand the needs of a really important
00:51engine.'"
00:53Thomas was fuming.
00:57The next morning, as James was being repainted, Henry had an accident.
01:04"'If you can't push trucks properly, Henry, why not talk to a tree instead?
01:10You know how much you like the forest.'"
01:12"'As a matter of fact, Bossy Boiler, the Fat Controller is inspecting the island for
01:16trees that are too close to the line.
01:19He's worried they might cause trouble.'"
01:20"'Pah!' laughed James.
01:21"'If I came upon a tree, I'd just push it aside.'"
01:25"'Really?' replied Henry."
01:29Soon James was showing off his paintwork.
01:32"'Make way for an important engine.'"
01:35"'You wouldn't feel important if one of these trees crashed on you.
01:39You'd feel hurt,' reproached Percy."
01:41"'Rubbish!
01:42It wouldn't, eh?'
01:44"'You should be careful, James.
01:46Trees can be just as powerful as engines,' advised Terence."
01:50"'Pah!' snorted James.
01:52"'Now excuse me, the Fat Controller needs me to pull the express.'"
01:56And he huffed away.
02:03But James was wrong.
02:05"'You must go to the yards and collect an important goods train, James.
02:09It's heavy, so be careful,' said the Fat Controller."
02:12"'But, sir, I've just been repainted.
02:14Can't Thomas or Percy do it?
02:16They're dirty and like working with trucks.'"
02:18"'Really useful engines don't argue.'"
02:21So James didn't.
02:24By the time he arrived at the yards, the weather had changed for the worse.
02:28"'Your colour's nice, James. Pity about your face, though,' said a truck."
02:36James ignored them and set off.
02:43Soon they came to a hill,
02:45and his driver knew that they were in for a difficult time.
02:50An old tree close to the track was being blown by the strong winds,
02:54and rain had weakened the slope.
02:57All of a sudden the tree moved.
03:11"'Ooooh! Help!' cried James.
03:14"'Go away!' But of course the tree couldn't.
03:17James tried to reverse away from the tree,
03:20but his train was too heavy.
03:26Then he heard a whistle.
03:28"'It's Thomas!' called his driver.
03:33James felt embarrassed and worried that Thomas would laugh at him,
03:36but Thomas didn't.
03:37He knew that this was no time for teasing.
03:42"'Beep! Beep! I'm ready!' whistled Thomas.
03:45"'So am I!' James replied.
03:47"'As ready as I'll ever be!'
03:56They were just in time.
04:00Later James spoke to Thomas.
04:02"'Percy and Terence were right to warn me,' he said.
04:05"'Thank you for rescuing me, Thomas.'
04:07"'Oh, that's all right. We engines must pull together, whatever the weather.'
04:11Just then Edward bustled in.
04:14"'The Fat Controller thinks you're both brave engines.
04:17"'Thomas, you're going to have a new coat of paint,
04:20"'and James, the Fat Controller says that tomorrow you'll pull the special express.'
04:25Everyone was very happy.
