The first debate between Biden and Trump since 2020 was filled with awkward stumbles, insults, and lies. Here are the highlights.
Transcript
00:00President Biden, you would be 86 at the end of your second term.
00:05How do you address concerns about your capability to handle the toughest job in the world well
00:11into your 80s?
00:12Well, first of all, I spent half my career being criticized as being the youngest person
00:19in politics.
00:20I was the second youngest person ever elected to the United States Senate, and now I'm the
00:24oldest.
00:25This guy is three years younger and a lot less competent.
00:28For President Trump to follow up, you would be 82 at the end of your second term.
00:33What do you say to voters who have concerns about your capabilities to serve?
00:37Well, I took two tests, cognitive tests.
00:39I aced them.
00:40Both of them, as you know, we made it public.
00:43He took none.
00:44I'd like to see him take one, just one, a real easy one, like go through the first five
00:47questions.
00:48He couldn't do it.
00:49But I took two cognitive tests.
00:50I took physical exams every year.
00:53And you know, we knock on wood, wherever we may have wood, that I'm in very good health.
00:58I just won two club championships, not even senior, two regular club championships.
01:03To do that, you have to be quite smart and you have to be able to hit the ball a long
01:07way.
01:08And I do it.
01:09He doesn't do it.
01:10He can't hit a ball 50 yards.
01:11He challenged me to a golf match.
01:12He can't hit a ball 50 yards.
01:14I think I'm in very good shape.
01:16I feel that I'm as in good shape as I was 25, 30 years ago.
01:20Actually, I'm probably a little bit lighter, but I'm in as good a shape as I was years
01:25ago.
01:26I feel very good.
01:27I feel the same.
01:28But I took I was willing to take a cognitive test.
01:30And you know what?
01:31If I didn't do well, I aced him.
01:32We'd be able to wipe out his debt.
01:34We'd be able to help make sure that all those things we need to do, child care, elder care,
01:39making sure that we continue to strengthen our health care system, making sure that we're
01:43able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I've been able to do with
01:50the covid, excuse me, with dealing with everything we have to do with.
01:58Look, if we finally beat Medicare.
02:03Thank you, President Biden.
02:04President Trump was right.
02:06He did beat Medicare, beat it to death and he's destroying Medicare.
02:10He did do a damn thing.
02:12And these people should be in jail and they should be the ones who are being held
02:16accountable. And he wants to let them all out.
02:19And now he says that he loses again such a whiner that he is that it could be a bloodbath.
02:24On January 6th, we had a great border, nobody coming through, very few.
02:29On January 6th, we were energy independent.
02:32On January 6th, we had the lowest taxes ever.
02:34We had the lowest regulations ever.
02:36On January 6th, we were respected all over the world, all over the world.
02:41We were respected. And then he comes in and we're now left that we're like a bunch of
02:46stupid people that what happened to the United States is reputation under this man's
02:51leadership is horrible.
02:53Will you pledge tonight that once all legal challenges have been exhausted, that you will
02:59accept the results of this election, regardless of who wins?
03:03And you will say right now that political violence in any form is unacceptable.
03:09Well, I shouldn't have to say that.
03:11But of course, I believe that it's totally unacceptable.
03:14And if you would see my statements that I made on Twitter at the time and also my statement
03:19that I made in the Rose Garden, you would say is one of the strongest statements you've
03:22ever seen. In addition to the speech I made in front of, I believe, the largest crowd
03:26I've ever spoken to.
03:27And I will tell you, nobody ever talks about that.
03:29They talk about a relatively small number of people that went to the Capitol and in
03:34many cases were ushered in by the police.
03:36And as Nancy Pelosi said, it was her responsibility, not mine.
03:40She said that loud and clear.
03:42But the answer is, if the election is fair, free.
03:45And I want that more than anybody.
03:47And I'll tell you something.
03:49I wish he was a great president because I wouldn't be here right now.
03:52I'd be at one of my many places enjoying myself.
03:56I wouldn't be under indictment because I wouldn't have been his political appoint, you
04:00know, opponent because he indicted me because I was his opponent.
04:04Russia would have never attacked.
04:06President Trump, the question was, will you accept the results of the election regardless
04:11of who wins? Yes or no, please.
04:13If it's a fair and legal and good election.
04:17Absolutely. I would have much rather accepted these.
04:21But the the fraud and everything else was ridiculous.
04:25And if you want, we'll have a news conference on it in a week or we'll have another one
04:28of these on in a week.
04:30But I will absolutely.
04:32There's nothing I'd rather do.
04:34It would be much easier for me to do that.
04:37Then I'm running again.
04:39I wasn't really going to run until I saw the horrible job he did.
04:44He's destroying our country.
04:45I would be very happy to be someplace else in a nice location someplace.
04:50And again, no indictments, no political opponent stuff, because it's the only way he
04:55thinks he can win. But unfortunately, it's driven up my numbers and driven him up to a
04:59very high level because the people understand it.
05:03Let's see what your numbers are in this election is over.
05:06Let's see. You're a whiner.
05:08When you lost the first time you said you continued, you appealed and appealed to courts
05:13all across the country. Not one single court in America said any of your claims had any
05:19merit, state or local, none.
05:22But you continue to provoke this lie about somehow there's all this misrepresentation,
05:28all this stealing.
05:29There is no evidence of that at all.
05:32And I tell you what, I doubt whether you'll accept it because you're such a whiner.
05:36The idea, if you lose again, you accepting anything, you can't stand the loss.
05:40Something snapped in you and you lost the last time.
05:42The only person in this stage is a convicted felon is the man I'm looking at right now.
05:47And the fact of the matter is he isn't what he's telling you is simply not true.
05:52The fact is that there was no effort on his part to stop what was going on up in Capitol
05:58Hill. And all those people, every one of those who were convicted, deserves to be
06:01convicted. Like so many politicians, this man is just a complainer.
06:05He said, we want to do this.
06:07We want to do that. We want to get rid of this tax, that tax.
06:10But he doesn't do anything.
06:12He doesn't do all he does is make our country unsafe by allowing millions and millions of
06:16people to pour in. This was his dream.
06:19I talked to him about his dream.
06:21The difference is he never would have invaded Ukraine.
06:24Never. Just like Israel would have never been invaded in a million years by Hamas.
06:32You know why? Because Iran was broke with me.
06:35I wouldn't let anybody do business with them.
06:37They ran out of money. They were broke.
06:38They had no money for Hamas.
06:40They had no money for anything, no money for terror.
06:43That's why you had no terror at all during my administration.
06:47This place, the whole world is blowing up under him.
06:50The only one who wants the war to continue is Hamas.
06:52Number one. They're the only ones standing.
06:54We're still pushing hard to get them to accept.
06:58Israel is the one that wants to go.
06:59He said the only one who wants to keep going is Hamas.
07:02Actually, Israel is the one.
07:03And you should let him go and let him finish the job.
07:06He doesn't want to do it. He's become like a Palestinian.
07:08But they don't like him because he's a very bad Palestinian.
07:11He's a weak one. Our veterans are on the street.
07:14They're dying because he doesn't care about our veterans.
07:16He doesn't care. He doesn't like the military at all.
07:18And he doesn't care about our veterans.
07:20Nobody been worse.
07:21I had the highest approval rating for veterans taking care of the VA.
07:25He is the worst. He's gotten rid of all the things that I approved.
07:28Choice that I got through Congress.
07:30All of the different things I approved, they abandoned.
07:34We had by far the highest.
07:35And now it's down in less than half because he's done all these great things
07:39that we did. And I think he did it just because I approved it, which is crazy.
07:43But he has killed so many people at our border by allowing all of these people to
07:47come in. And it's a very sad day in America.
07:50President Biden, you have the mic.
07:51Every single thing he said is a lie.
07:53Every single one. For example, veterans are a hell of a lot better off since I
07:57passed the PACT Act. One million of them now have insurance and their families
08:02have it. Their families have it because what happened, whether it was Agent Orange
08:06or burn pits, they're all being covered now.
08:09And he opposed his group opposed that.
08:11We're also in a situation where we have great respect for veterans.
08:14My spent my son spent a year in Iraq.
08:17Maybe one of the next one of those burn pits came back with stage four glioblastoma.
08:21I was recently in France for D-Day and I spoke
08:27about those heroes that died.
08:29I went to the World War Two cemetery, World War One cemetery he refused to go to.
08:33He was standing with his four star general and he told me, said, I don't want to go
08:37in there because they're a bunch of losers and suckers.
08:39My son was not a loser, was not a sucker.
08:42You're the sucker. You're the loser.
08:44I supported Roe v. Wade, which had three trimesters.
08:47The first time is between the woman and the doctor.
08:50Second time is between the doctor and an extreme situation.
08:54The third time is between the doctor.
08:57I mean, between the woman and the state.
08:59The idea that the politicians, that the founders wanted the politicians to be
09:04the ones making decisions about women's health is ridiculous.
09:07He can take the life of the baby in the ninth month and even after birth,
09:12because some states, Democrat run, take it after birth.
09:16Again, the governor, former governor of Virginia, put the baby down, then we decide
09:20what to do with it. So he's he's willing to, as we say, rip the baby out of the
09:25womb in the ninth month and kill the baby.
09:27Nobody wants that to happen.
09:29Democrat or Republican, nobody wants it to happen.
09:32That is simply not true.
09:34The Roe v. Wade does not provide for that.
09:37That's not the circumstance.
09:38Only if a woman's life is in danger, she's going to die.
09:40That's the only circumstance in which that can happen.
09:43But we are not for late term abortion, period, period, period.
09:47We had an economy that was in freefall.
09:49The pandemic was so badly handled.
09:51Many people were dying.
09:53All he said was, it's not that serious.
09:54Just inject a little bleach in your arm.
09:57You'll be all right. The economy collapsed.
09:59There were no jobs.
10:00Unemployment rate rose to 15 percent.
10:03It was terrible.
10:04And so what we had to do is try to put things back together again.
10:07That's exactly what we began to do.
10:09We created 15,000 new jobs.
10:12We brought on a position where we have 800,000 new manufacturing jobs.
10:16But there's more to be done.
10:18There's more to be done. Working class people are still in trouble.
10:21We had the greatest economy in the history of our country.
10:24We have never done so well.
10:27Everybody was amazed by it.
10:29Other countries were copying us.
10:31We got hit with COVID.
10:33And when we did, we spent the money necessary so we wouldn't end up in a great
10:37depression, the likes of which we had in 1929.
