00:03Finally, we won against Afghanistan.
00:04I mean, it was always on the expected line.
00:05But what was not on the expected line is the form of these two gentlemen.
00:06Yes, we're talking about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
00:07I mean, he's turned the clock a little bit.
00:082023 World Cup at home, both are battling beautifully.

00:50We're going to have a chance to win.
00:51We're going to have a chance to win.
00:52We're going to have a chance to win.
00:53We're going to have a chance to win.
00:55Virat can go.
00:56Rohit can stay.
00:57And who will go?
00:58Who will stay?
00:59What will happen?
01:00Let's find out from our expert Avinash and Shakya joining us.
01:04Gentlemen, Shakya, welcome.
01:08Gentlemen, welcome.
01:09I mean, of course, Avinash.
01:10I want to know, Avinash, what's happening?
01:12Who's going to go?
01:13Who's going to stay?
01:14Where are the youngsters?
01:15I mean, of course, some people…
01:17I was talking to a few top cricketers and they said,
01:21well, if he scores in the semifinal game, what do you do?
01:25I said, of course, there'll be flashes of brilliance once in a while.
01:28But that consistency, the way they are playing…
01:32T20 has changed so much.
01:34So much.
01:35You know, you can't play a dot ball.
01:36You can't play anything all along the ground.
01:39You have to play those lofted drives.
01:41Play those uppish drives.
01:43And that's what T20 cricket is all about.
01:46Once you go to the field, you're going to realize.
01:47Avinash, your thoughts?
01:50Definitely, Dada.
01:51This is what we were discussing back then when the team was announced.
01:54I mean, everybody had the similar thoughts.
01:56Because it was pretty evident that Virat and Rohit are going to open the innings.
02:02And they are…
02:03I mean, looking at the kind of performances they have had in the past in the T20Is.
02:08Or in the T20s.
02:10IPL, if we can talk about.
02:12They look like similar kind of a battle.
02:15And who take their time.
02:17Kohli is more of an accumulator, aggregator.
02:20He takes his time.
02:22Plays those grounded shots.
02:23While Rohit Sharma, we all know his template.
02:26He takes his time.
02:27Settles down.
02:28And then he explodes.
02:29After facing, say, about 20-25 deliveries.
02:33But cricket, as we all have seen in the IPL as well.
02:37It's evolved a lot.
02:39And you cannot waste 20-25 balls.
02:42In fact, yesterday, the match between West Indies and England.
02:46The West Indians ended up eating around 40-odd dot balls.
02:51And that was their peril.
02:53And one of the reasons they lost the match was because of the amount of dot balls they conceded.
02:58They played.
02:59So, obviously, a serious thinking needs to be done between these two.
03:05Because nobody can come up and tell them or preach them.
03:09I think the word could be plead, not preach for these two gentlemen.
03:14And, of course, post the T20 World Cup, whatever may be the outcome.
03:19Whether India end up winning it.
03:21Or, once again, failing to cross the finish line.
03:26Or the story repeats from 2016-2022.
03:31That we end up as the semi-finalists.
03:34Whatever is in store for us.
03:36But I certainly, for sure, do not see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing for India in the T20 Ice side.
03:44After this tournament.
03:47Pinar, the preacher is coming.
03:50Gautam Gambhir is joining the team very soon.
03:55Let's hope the preacher, the teacher, the headmaster, taskmaster, whatever we might call him.
04:03Definitely, things are gonna change.
04:05And what we hear is that he will be joining the side only in the month of August.
04:12So, the West Indies, the Zimbabwe tour that we are going to tour right after the World Cup.
04:19Where a lot of French players and youngsters are going to be tried and tested.
04:23VVS Lakshman, the NCA head, is going to be the head coach on that tour.
04:29Well, we don't know that. I mean, let's just announce it.
04:32I mean, I am not sure about how things work there.
04:35But of course, when you start with the French players.
04:39And probably, West Indies Avinash could be a good sort of starting point for Gautam Gambhir.
04:44Get to know the French players.
04:45You already know the Rohit Sharma's and the Virat Kohli's.
04:50But 24 runs out of 24 deliveries.
04:52The wicket wasn't that difficult to bat.
04:55Shakya, I thought it eased out a little later on.
04:59But your thoughts, Virat Kohli, the way…
05:03I remember one particular shot was a half-volley, juicy half-volley.
05:07You just played a proper cricket shot.
05:09But proper cricket shot is not required here.
05:12You have to hit the ball.
05:13At least when you get a scoring… I mean a bad ball, you dispatch it for a boundary.
05:19Your thoughts, Shakya?
05:21Yeah, what both these two batters are going through in this tournament is unusual.
05:27It was not unexpected because they had spent time outside the T20 side.
05:33Virat Kohli has been doing well in the IPL.
05:35You can't say that about Rohit Sharma.
05:37But we have to look at both ways.
05:42Maybe it's not a bad thing that Rohit Sharma got out early.
05:46I mean, if you are not making runs, don't waste deliveries.
05:49Which is what we can say in the case of Rohit Sharma.
05:53In the case of Virat Kohli, he needed to hang in there.
05:56He needed to hang in there.
05:57Maybe he was required to hang in there.
05:59We were fortunate that Surya Kumar Yadav and then Hardik Pandya.
06:03And then before that, Rishabh Pant.
06:04Rishabh Pant played a big role in changing the momentum of the game yesterday.
06:08I think the Afghan bowlers had the word over us to begin with.
06:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:13But I think at the end of the day, it's not looking good for either of these two players.
06:19It should not.
06:20Their ages.
06:21One is 37.
06:22The other is 36.
06:23And T20 is that one format where there is a lot of talent coming through in India.
06:31And we need to…
06:34This is probably their last dance as we might call it.
06:37But yesterday, I felt in yesterday's match, I think Afghanistan missed a trick.
06:42I think I would call it maybe the inexperience of Rashid Khan's captaincy.
06:46They should have given an extra over to Fazal Haq Farooqui in the par play.
06:50Because if Fazal Haq Farooqui had…
06:53He was bowling well.
06:54If he had managed to get…
06:56In his second over, he got Rohit Sharma out.
06:59He would have given one more over.
07:01I wouldn't have been surprised if he got either Pant or Kohli out in his third over.
07:07That would have made a big difference in the game.
07:09So, a little bit of inexperience from Afghanistan in the captaincy as well.
07:13But kudos to the likes of Surya Kumar, Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya for changing the momentum of the contest and bailing us out.
07:24We were 15-20 runs more than what we needed on that surface.
07:27But talking about Virat and Rohit Sharma, that's our talking point today.
07:35Just imagine, they are not scoring, these two guys.
07:39We haven't seen Hardik also not getting those big ones.
07:45Rishabh also got in patches.
07:48So, once all these guys would come good, how will it look?
07:55I am just wondering.
07:56Do we have a chance in those knockout games?
08:00These guys are not scoring.
08:01Probably, they will score in the matches which will matter the most.
08:05How do you see that, Abhinav?
08:07Panning out for us.
08:08Definitely, it will be a concern.
08:12Because what we have seen, as you rightly mentioned about the ODI World Cup last year.
08:17Virat and Rohit were just…
08:19Rohit was setting the momentum and template for the way the batters in the middle order need to approach.
08:26And Virat was capitalizing on it.
08:28And then there were others who were finishing it.
08:30So, it was a perfect balance as far as the batting is concerned.
08:36And that is the reason why we ended up in the finals.
08:39And the very reason we didn't win or post the big runs in the finals was
08:46we didn't follow the template that we were following in the previous matches.
08:49So, definitely, going forward, especially in the match against Australia
08:54and if we qualify for the knockout stages where we are either supposed to play England, West Indies or South Africa.
09:02These teams are not going to give you a lot many leeways like what Afghanistan have done
09:09or the Pakistani or the US side has done.
09:12So, definitely, you will have to bank upon your most trusted warriors.
09:19And if these warriors are not being able to perform, then it is definitely going to be a nightmare for India.
09:28God forbid, if the middle order which is clicking.
09:31And obviously, law of averages catches up sometimes.
09:35So, when the middle order will not be able to perform, then you will be nowhere.
09:42We will be nowhere. That's true.
09:44But Pant and Hardik are the only two potential batters I can see.
09:49Because I missed out on these two names. Rohit, Virat, then of course, Shivam Dubey and Jadeja.
09:57These four guys are not coming to the party.
09:59But if Hardik and Rishabh would play to their potential, how would it look, Shakya?
10:06It will be such a glorious thing for India, isn't it?
10:11The only word which comes to my mind if Hardik and Rishabh are scoring is that word called glory.
10:18We will be glorified.
10:20I feel Rishabh is a man on a mission from whatever I have seen in this tournament.
10:24I know he has not made a 50 so far.
10:26But that doesn't matter.
10:29Every one of his matches, whether it is his games against Pakistan or whatever he did yesterday,
10:34it was not a very high-scoring innings.
10:36But it definitely took the Afghan bowlers off their rhythm yesterday.
10:41And I believe Rishabh is a man on a mission.
10:45Hardik also has a lot to prove.
10:47Especially after his not very happy captaincy stint with Mumbai Indians.
10:52But he is an absolute game-changer.
10:55And Surya Kumar Yadav is always there.
10:58Surya Kumar Yadav has been…
11:00I hope he is always there.
11:01Because he is a very good team against weaker side.
11:03But he is never a big player against weaker side.
11:06I mean, we will see that.
11:08But Surya Kumar Yadav in T20 cricket has that range of shots for all kinds of bowlers, for all kinds of deliveries.
11:19One of the reasons why I have been a big fan of Surya Kumar Yadav even before he played for India.
11:24I felt he would have been a very good fit in limited overs cricket.
11:27He didn't do it in ODIs.
11:29But in T20s, he comes to the party.
11:33Now what will happen is, if these people…
11:35Especially Surya Kumar Yadav.
11:37I am not talking about Rohit Virat.
11:39Rishabh Pant is a big match player.
11:41No question about it.
11:42But if these guys have that temperament to perform in a semi-final, in a crunch match.
11:48Because in the case of Surya Kumar Yadav, we saw what has happened to him in two crunch matches.
11:55The semi-final of T20 World Cup and the final of ODI World Cup.
12:00Are they big match players?
12:02Do they have that big match temperament?
12:04We have not seen that.
12:06So, still yesterday was an important victory.
12:10Because Afghanistan, I felt, would have been the biggest challenge in our way before going through to the knockouts.
12:18But even then, I wouldn't say Bangladesh should be an easy match either.
12:21I think we need to win that match against Bangladesh as well.
12:24But, you know, looking at the way the tournament is setting up, it's tough.
12:30India will have to be at its best to win this.
12:32There are lots of teams that can win the World Cup.
12:36So, I won't say…
12:37Absolutely. And to do that good work…
12:39There is a lot of work to do.
12:40Yeah. And to do that good work, we need solid foundation.
12:44And hence, the opening has to be good.
12:46That's the only way.
12:47But, Avinash, yesterday I thought Bumrah will again get a Man of the Match award.
12:53The way he bowled.
12:55He is just…
12:57I mean, whatever he is releasing, it's turning out to be gold.
13:01You know, I mean, turning out to be…
13:03Every time, every delivery.
13:05I mean, there is some…
13:07I mean, he is right now the best in the world.
13:11And every time we see him…
13:13Unbelievable stuff, really.
13:15I haven't seen any Indian fast bowler creating such impact in world cricket.
13:20Putting the fear of God inside the opponent's backing side.
13:24Which is an amazing thing.
13:26We have seen…
13:27We had match winners.
13:28We had Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble in form of spinners.
13:32We had Zaheer Khan, who was again…
13:34We had Ashish Nairaj.
13:36But this Bumrah is…
13:38We had Kapil Dev also.
13:40We have seen bits and pieces.
13:42Kapil Dev towards the back end of his career.
13:44But this man is simply next level.
13:47Even Vasim Akram is going gaga about Bumrah.
13:50We see him talking, commenting on the game.
13:53And Bumrah is just next level.
13:55What has he done to himself?
13:58I mean, what does he eat to come to the ground?
14:00That's my basic question.
14:04Absolutely.
14:05I mean, he has been the biggest match winner.
14:08And he is not made of the same kind of stuff
14:12which others are made of.
14:14That's definitely there.
14:16Absolutely.
14:17He could have been the player of the match.
14:21Had it not been for that 190-plus strike rate innings from Surya Kumar Yadav.
14:27And he ensured that Indian team had the momentum at the end of the innings.
14:33So, kudos to Surya Kumar Yadav.
14:35But matches are won by battles.
14:39But if you wish to win a tournament, definitely you will need the support of the bowlers.
14:44And your bowlers are going to win you the tournament.
14:47And this is what Bumrah is doing.
14:50We saw in the ODI World Cup, what Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav.
14:56I mean, they were the men on mission.
14:59And similarly, here again, just like Shakya mentioned.
15:03If Rishabh Pant is a man on mission, so does Jasprit Bumrah.
15:08Let's be very honest.
15:10Because he has been the match-winner for India right from the start.
15:14But he has played 3 T20I World Cups, 2 ODI World Cups.
15:18But there has not been a single trophy in his cabinet.
15:21And an ICC Champions Trophy as well.
15:25So, definitely, he must also be very inclined to go and end up winning and lifting a trophy.
15:35So, Jasprit Bumrah is also, just like Rishabh Pant, a man on mission.
15:41There is a hunger not just to pick wickets, to just look the battlers very diminutive in front of him.
15:52And also, help India lift that coveted trophy.
15:56Because it's been almost 8 years since Jasprit Bumrah entered into the international circuit.
16:07And we've already always knew what kind of a player he is going to be.
16:12I mean, we knew there were glimpses of him.
16:14But obviously, he just surpassed everybody else.
16:18And became not just a legend for Indian cricket, but in fact, the world over.
16:24True. And that's why, you know, the way he is bowling, it's now or never.
16:29For Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
16:33In fact, they have been part of different teams.
16:36Kohli was part of 2011-2050 World Cup winning team.
16:41Rohit was also part of Zone 7, inaugural T20 World Cup team.
16:46But somehow, you know, which is good also.
16:49Kuldeep Yadav walking back into the team in place of Shiraj.
16:54At least we have a match. Because our approach, Shakya, has been be safe.
16:59You know, I mean, be safe. Don't go for runs. Don't go for wickets.
17:03I mean, our approach has not been absolutely spot-on like the Australian bowlers.
17:09We don't go for wickets.
17:11Our main mission in a T20 game is to save runs.
17:16But when you have attacking bowlers like Bumrah and Kuldeep,
17:21we can expect some miracle this time.
17:23Because we have to get out of that feel-good, that comfort level, comfort zone
17:30of just saving runs, 4 overs, 30 runs, I bowl well.
17:34No, it's not going to work. How many wickets you have taken?
17:37That culture, probably, and the way Bumrah is bowling,
17:42I think that culture will sort of take Indian cricket forward.
17:45In days to come.
17:47No, your point about Australia is correct and you are talking about playing safe.
17:52But the question here is that Australia has an advantage in that their 2 premier bowlers
17:59are also reasonably good batters.
18:02I am talking about Mitchell Stark and Patrick Cummins.
18:05Now, India does not have that luxury.
18:08Therefore, they are having to play Apsar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja together.
18:13Now, that obviously means that they cannot play another specialist bowler.
18:17Be it Siraj or be it Rahel.
18:19They have played Kuldeep.
18:21Now, how does that change? I don't know.
18:24Because you need that batting depth.
18:26Australia has that batting depth.
18:28You can't help it.
18:29I mean, it's their Australia's luck, it's Australia's talent.
18:33When they were a dominant side in the past, even they used to have Brett Lee.
18:37Brett Lee used to be a really good batter.
18:39Used to be a decent batter down the order.
18:41Shane Wall used to be a decent batter down the order.
18:44India has not had that quality of players.
18:47Ravichandran Ashwin.
18:48But Ravichandran Ashwin does not play limited overs cricket very much.
18:51So, they are having to play Apsar Patel.
18:53Can you do without Apsar Patel and Jadeja?
18:59I don't think so.
19:00I think you need that extra batting cover at number 8.
19:03I would love to see an extra more attacking option there.
19:09But if your batting ends at number 7, that is a little bit of a…
19:17On these kind of pitches, not very good.
19:22Even England has got their bowlers can bat down the order.
19:28The bowlers are better batters compared to what Indians have.
19:32It's about culture, actually.
19:36It's about culture.
19:38Risk is always there.
19:40But we are starting to believe in that culture.
19:43Avinash, this man called Varun Chakraborty.
19:46He plays for KKR.
19:48And it was made clear to him at the very onset that you are a good bowler.
19:54You have to bat well also.
19:55So, if you are a good batter, you have to bowl well also.
19:58That kind of thing.
19:59But I think Rohit and Virat are the last of the Mohicans.
20:03Because this game is so all-rounder-tilted, as Shakya was saying.
20:07Even Arshtey was not…
20:10He was very lucky with the wicket-taking ability, I think.
20:13He is a man with a golden arm, the way he thinks.
20:15Last match, he took 4.
20:17This match, 3.
20:18So, he is sort of…
20:19He is a little expensive, touch expensive.
20:21But first of all, went for 13 odd runs or something.
20:24But Arshtey also needs to bat.
20:27And how do we…
20:28I mean, we are already talking about it within the team.
20:32How long do you think it will take us to go there, to reach that level where our batters are doing well also?
20:38I mean, bowlers are also batting well.
20:40And batters are bowling.
20:41That sort of culture.
20:43It will take time, Dada.
20:46It's not easy.
20:47I mean, the primary job…
20:48If you look at the domestic circuit, what's the primary job of a batter or a bowler?
20:52I mean, just look at the way things are in Indian cricket as of now.
20:57Batters are not bowling.
20:58So, why should a bowler be taking an extra…
21:01Making the extra effort of batting?
21:04I mean, his frontline job is to bowl.
21:07He is not an all-rounder.
21:08I mean, if he is an all-rounder, it's okay.
21:10And generally, you cannot expect…
21:12I mean, the culture is not there in Indian cricket, the domestic circuit or in the grassroot level.
21:19You will have to inculcate that culture.
21:23It might again take a time of, say, another 5-8 years to bring in that feeling into the players.
21:32Or the young and budding players.
21:34That they should also take their batting or other aspects of the game seriously.
21:40They should be good fielders.
21:41They should be good throwers.
21:44Whether they are in the 30-yard circle or the boundary ropes.
21:49Everything.
21:50Gradually, I think IPL will have to play a bigger role in this department.
21:56Because players generally, nowadays, are thinking…
22:00Okay, this is going to help me get a better IPL contract.
22:04If I have a certain batting.
22:07Also, figures are associated alongside my bowling numbers.
22:12So, definitely, that is where the culture needs to shift.
22:17And it will take some time.
22:19But you cannot just ask Varun Chakraborty, who is a brilliant bowler, to just come and bowl.
22:27Because Virat Kohli and Virat Chakraborty are not holding their arms.
22:30They have been told. I mean, Varun has been told like that.
22:34But thing is, impact rules.
22:37Whatever impact rules they have.
22:39Impact player rules, they will have to get rid of that.
22:43For us to get more all-round…
22:45Can I come in?
22:46Yeah, yeah. Please, go ahead.
22:47If I might come in, if you look at Australia or if you looked at the England side at some point of time.
22:53You know, if you look at Brett Lee or Mitchell Johnson or Stark and Cummins.
22:58They did not get into the team because of their ability to bat.
23:02They got into the team primarily as bowlers.
23:05Okay, alright. Yes.
23:07Bat is an additional thing.
23:09So, the story is very simple.
23:11If you want an ICC tournament, you need good all-rounders.
23:14You have seen it in 1983.
23:17We have seen it in 2007.
23:18We have seen it in 2011.
23:20Without an all-rounder, we don't have a standing anywhere.
23:23Really.
23:24And on that note, thanks Avinash and Shakya for coming and throwing light.
23:29And hopefully, we will see some all-round abilities.
23:32Helping our team to go all the way and win this trophy.
23:35The ongoing T20 World Cup.
23:38Thanks for watching and keep enjoying cricket.
23:41Thanks.
