Justin Timberlake has a prime opportunity to save lives in the wake of his arrest, but only if he's willing to own up to the alleged DWI ... so says Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Stacey D. Stewart, CEO of MADD, tells TMZ that JT is seriously lucky his night out in Sag Harbor, NY didn't end tragically ... with himself or someone else getting hurt. But, that being said, she's imploring the singer to use his celebrity to condemn impaired driving.

00:00Well, what Matt thinks Justin should do at this point is to, first of all, he's got to
00:07go through the criminal justice process and basically own the consequences for his actions
00:13with the legal system.
00:16That's the first thing.
00:17The second thing, though, is that he has an amazing platform.
00:19He can be a very powerful role model for others who need to be told that getting behind the
00:25wheel when you've been drinking and using substances is never okay.
00:29He made a mistake.
00:30He made a bad decision.
00:31And no one else should do that.
00:32You can have a very powerful message to so many people that this is not the kind of behavior
00:38that is either legal or appropriate and certainly can put himself and could have put himself
00:44and others at risk.
00:46And it is something that we have to get rid of in this country.
00:48We need to bring impaired driving to zero in this country.
00:52And that's what that is all about.
00:53Well, Matt would be very disappointed if Justin didn't realize that this moment of his poor
00:59judgment and his mistake could be a moment that could pivot the behavior of so many tens
01:06and tens of thousands of people if he doesn't use his platform in a way that he has the
01:11opportunity to do so now.
01:13And so one of the things that we would like to see in Matt is for him to realize that
01:17out of these kinds of judgments and out of these kinds of this kind of behavior, he has
01:22an opportunity to really influence so many people who could make that same decision to
01:27get behind the wheel after they've been drinking and using substances.
01:31And based on his message, might decide to make a different decision, might decide to
01:36get a designated driver, might decide to use rideshare or take an Uber.
01:40And that's the kind of behavior we want to see change.
01:42He has an opportunity to change behavior for so many people who in a snap moment could
01:47make a snap decision that could actually save many lives.
01:51And we hope he will see that there's an opportunity out of what he's going through to
01:55make a big change in other people's lives.
