00:00Journalism is a great job, but today's journalists face a growing list of challenges.
00:06Disinformation and artificial intelligence, threats, violence, sometimes war.
00:12Organizers of this year's DW Global Media Forum hope it can help find solutions.
00:18In a keynote speech, the German foreign minister said some governments were endangering journalists when they should be protecting them.
00:27In 2023, an estimated 120 journalists were killed while doing their job.
00:33Almost two-thirds of them in Gaza alone.
00:38That is unacceptable.
00:41We are also seeing autocratic regimes across the world increasingly cracking down on independent media.
00:56Baerbock also warned there was a risk AI could be used to sow division and increase inequality.
01:03She said Germany is pushing for international regulation to counter that.
01:08Those concerns were picked up by Maria Ressa, journalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner from the Philippines.
01:15Journalism is an antidote to tyranny.
01:18Who but journalists will stand up to a dictator and ask the tough questions in the most polite of ways, right?
01:29And yet, if you're a digital news site, because of actions by big tech, you may die.
01:35Our websites may die within a year.
01:39Around 1,500 media professionals from over 100 countries are attending this annual forum.
01:45Many say it's a useful chance to look at the bigger picture.
01:49I enjoy the discussion on tech regulation and the challenges that women are facing in journalism.
01:55I think it's just the diversity of voices that you get to hear and hearing about the global issues
02:00and similarities and differences of all the things that are affecting news media all over the world.
02:05We've interacted with a lot of people from Asia, from Latin America, from Mexico, from Morocco,
02:11and it's interesting to see how so many of our issues are very similar.
02:16Either it's AI, either it's the war in Ukraine or the responsibility of platforms,
02:22but also the Middle East, and there's a lot of polarization.
02:25But here in Bonn, at the GMF, we can at least talk about it.
02:29While talking continues, democracy can live.
02:33That is a hope that all here seem to share.
