Oscar the Grouch and lifestyle expert Sunny Anderson team up to help rescue dogs find their fur-ever homes by crafting costumes from upcycled trash.

02:38We've gotten all of our dogs from the local animal shelters
02:44Because I feel like every animal needs and deserves a loving home
02:49A dog adoption means that dogs are waiting for you to get a family
02:56I love about dogs is they can be playful, they can be productive, and they also can lick you a lot

03:10Well, you guys have a lovely family
03:16So, what can we do for you today?
03:18We have recently been volunteering at our local animal shelter
03:21And we have just formed this amazing connection with the animals
03:26And so we were hoping that you could help us do something to help other people see how amazing having dogs in your life can be

03:38Yeah, well, I've adopted pets, too
03:40Sure, a worm, a pig, an elephant, and they all live in my trash can
03:46Now, I like worms, but they're a little bit slimy

05:45So we take in all the lost, stray, abandoned, neglected animals in our area
05:50And try to find them loving homes
05:51There are tons of mixed breed
05:53But then you can also have dogs that are full breed dogs

05:56I've gotten a boxer from a rescue
05:58I've also gotten a Maine Coon cat from a rescue
06:02As well as a foxhound
06:04And those are full breed animals
06:06And I also have some mixed breed dogs
06:07And they're all lovely

06:09We get great dogs at the shelter

06:19This is a really cool shelter
06:21They actually have a hospital and volunteers
06:24That walk the dogs, take them on field trips
06:26They even have a program where kids can read to the dogs

07:46But today, we're going to focus on just three
07:48Bella, Finnegan, and Journey
07:52Let's make them some outfits, huh?

10:08In order to make a spider costume
10:11We've got to start by making the spider body
10:13So today we're going to make a spider for Bella
10:16Now that spider's going to be really easy
10:18Because I found a lot of really cool things to reuse
10:20For Bella's spider
10:21We're going to reuse things like
10:23Worn metal hangers
10:25A feather boa
10:26Plastic cups
10:27And a used black shopping bag
10:29Filled with my old recycled newspapers
10:31What is this?
10:34Oh, I've been looking for that
10:35Stinky
10:36Yeah
10:36Yeah, this newspaper will be perfect
10:39We've just got to crumple it up
10:41Yeah

10:48I think we've got it pretty full
10:50Then we're going to seal it with a rubber band
10:52And hot glue the base
10:53So, make sure when you're using a glue gun
10:56You always have an adult with you, okay?
10:58And I like to have a little cup of ice water
11:00Because glue guns are hot
11:01And if you accidentally touch your finger to it
11:03Just dip your finger into the cold ice water
11:05You won't burn yourself
11:06So, I'm just going to put a little bit here
11:09And then I'm just going to push it down
11:11And kind of hold it
11:13Yeah, you've done this before, huh?

11:18Crafting's the best
11:19So, for the legs, we're going to use wire hangers
11:22Cut the wire part in half
11:23And then bend it into the shape of a spider leg

11:31This looks like a tarantula
11:33So, like, black furry legs
11:35What about these?
11:37Oh, yeah

12:06We'll use red tinsel and wrap it around
12:08And secure that as well with some hot glue

12:18We're going to make some eyeballs out of these cups
12:20For the spider's eyes
12:22We use a black marker
12:25And then we cut it out as a little circle

12:40The spider's going to make some adorable dog look creepy and crawly, all right

12:54Because now, our costume is going to be super unique for Bella
12:59We need two more costumes for the rest of the dogs

13:03So when we were at the rescue shelter
13:06There was a dog that really took to Oscar
13:08So, I thought it would be fun
13:11To bring in a couple of helpers
13:13To make an Oscar-themed Halloween costume

13:20We're going to turn this wagon into a garbage truck
13:23For Oscar's puppy friend, Cass
13:25Oh, but don't tell anybody

13:34We're going to use some cardboard
13:35And paint it for the sides
13:38And use some glue
13:39To make it look like a garbage truck
13:41Are you guys ready to make another Halloween costume for our doggies?

13:50Can you believe all of this trash can make a taco?
13:53Well, it's Tuesday somewhere
13:55To make our taco
13:57We'll need things like
13:59Used cardboard
14:00A soggy pool noodle
14:01Felt scraps
14:02Paint
14:03And an old mop
14:04The first thing we need to do is make the taco shell, right?
14:08For the taco we're going to start with cardboard
14:10We're going to paint it on the brown side with yellow paint
14:13So we've got to fill this taco up right here with some fun stuff
14:16First things first, got to get the lettuce in there, right?
14:19Yeah
14:20The lettuce is going to be from green felt
14:22We'll just cut strips and make little cuts into those along the length
14:25And we're going to glue gun the lettuce to our taco
14:30So Oscar, if you were to make a taco, what would be your favorite topping?
14:34Oh, jalapenos
14:35Yeah
14:36Definitely, yeah, because jalapenos make you sweat, right?
14:40All sweat
14:41And then you get sweat stains and smell up the place
14:44Yeah, jalapenos
14:47So then we're going to make some jalapenos out of pool noodles
14:50That really pops when you cut into it
14:53Are you sure you're not making jalapeno poppers?
14:58We're going to cut them and then paint them with green paint
15:01To make them look like jalapenos
15:03Then we're going to make some cheese
15:05Who likes cheese?

15:08We are going to use an old mop head to make cheese
15:11This also looks like hair

16:09And Oscar, we rummaged through a little bit of your trash
16:13And I think I found some good things to make it
16:15Yeah, to make our jet pack
16:16We'll need things like recycled bottles
16:19Can lids
16:20Old paper towel rolls
16:22Aluminum foil
16:23And red tape
16:25So for the jet pack we're going to reuse plastic bottles
16:29And cover them with aluminum foil
16:30So they look like the actual jet packs
16:33Oscar, you're done already
16:35Yeah, you know, it's my trash
16:38I know how to use it
16:39I'm going to tape them up with some red tape
16:42So they'll hold together
16:43And then I found some other lids around
16:45Even from the plastic bottles
16:46We're going to color those up
16:48And we'll use those like as little
16:49I don't know
16:50Push buttons, you know?

16:54We've got our jet pack for our doggy
16:56Yeah, and I even put a little space muck on it
