00:00Hello everyone, Adam Monk here again from 442.

00:06Now with Euro 2024 fast approaching, I thought we'd have a quick run through all the previous

00:12winners of this competition dating back to 1960.

00:15So we'll start there and work to present day.

00:18So without further ado, let's go.

00:21So in 1960, the first Euro competition, it was actually won by the Soviet Union who beat

00:25Yugoslavia in the final 2-1 after extra time.

00:30Featuring for the Soviets back then.

00:32In 1964, it was then Spain who came out on top and actually took the Soviet Union's crown

00:37by beating them in the final by two goals to one.

00:40Then in 1968, this was an interesting one.

00:43Not only because Italy won their first ever Euros, but the first final against the Soviet

00:47Union was 1-1 and it's the only Euros final to ever be replayed.

00:51So in the replay, the Italians came out on top 2-0 and to date, and I mean, it will be

00:56for the rest of future as well.

00:57Presumably this is the only Euros final that was ever replayed and the Italians came out

01:01on top.

01:02Then in 1972, you had Franz Beckenbauer and West Germany who came out on top, beating

01:07the Soviet Union.

01:08They got to a lot of finals 3-0 in this final.

01:11But then in 76, it was time for Czechoslovakia to wrestle the crown back off West Germany

01:16after beating them in a game in which was 2-2 in normal time and then 5-3 in the penalty

01:21shootout to the Czechs.

01:23In 1980 though, it was West Germany who got their crown back, beating Belgium 2-1 in the

01:27final this time round.

01:29But then in 1984, it was France who won the tournament for the very first time, getting

01:33their name on the trophy and more importantly, this was the tournament that was really remembered

01:37as a Michel Platini tournament where he really stood out and went on to consequently win

01:42several Ballon d'Ors.

01:43They beat Spain in the final 2-0 by the way.

01:45In 88, it was time for the Netherlands to win their one and only Euros to date.

01:49They beat the Soviet Union who again, in another final, they beat them 2-0 thanks to

01:53goals from Ruud Holle and Marco van Basten, two pretty decent players I'd wager.

01:59But this is when the underdog stories really start to kick in.

02:01In 1992, it was Peter Schmeichel's Denmark that went on to win the competition, beating

02:06Germany 2-0 in the final and we will obviously, I'm sure as you'll know, hear about another

02:11underdog story coming up shortly but this was the first of those and yeah, a shock for

02:16everyone really.

02:17I wasn't expecting Denmark to win this tournament at all and it just goes to show, anything

02:20can happen in football.

02:221996, of course, hosted in England, remember that Gaza miss and the dentist chair celebration?

02:27That tournament?

02:28Well, it was won by Germany who beat Czechia in the final by two goals to one but ugh,

02:33I mean anyone who's watching this from England, you'll just remember that Gaza moment.

02:37It could have been so different.

02:392000, the turn of the millennium and it was time for France and Zinedine Zidane to win

02:43the competition for a second time and they beat Italy 2-1 in the final in a brief period

02:48of dominance for the French.

02:502004, yes, of course, it's time for underdog story number two, this one arguably even bigger

02:55than the Denmark one.

02:56It was, of course, Greece who won Euro 2004 against all odds, beating Portugal 1-0 in

03:02the final which was a bit of justice for England fans after the whole Wayne Rooney, Cristiano

03:06Ronaldo winking incident.

03:08You remember the one.

03:09Well, Portugal didn't win it in the end, Greece did.

03:12And then 2008, I just briefly touched on France's short period of dominance in the

03:1690s and early 2000s but this one, probably the best ever from any national side in the

03:21world.

03:22It was the start of Spain's period of dominance.

03:24They beat Germany 1-0 in the final.

03:26And this was also when Fernando Torres was really at the peak of his power so not only

03:30did Spain have an amazing possession passing team but they had the deadliest striker on

03:34the planet at this point.

03:35And then in 2012, Spain won it again, this time not really needing a striker.

03:39They played Fabregas at false nine or David Silva and they ended up beating Italy 4-0

03:44in the final.

03:45An absolute drubbing.

03:46This was the absolute pinnacle, in my opinion, of international football.

03:49I don't think we'll ever see an international side better than this Spain side.

03:52They had Iniesta, Xavi, Xavi Alonso, David Silva, Pedro, Fabregas.

03:56It was basically a six-man midfield that just did not lose the ball and they could just

04:00pick teams apart at their will and they absolutely did to a very strong Italy side.

04:05Then in 2016, this was the tournament where player manager Cristiano Ronaldo came out

04:09on top and beat France in a slightly underdog victory in Paris in Euro 2016.

04:14You'll remember Adair, of course, scoring the decisive goal in that game from range

04:18and it was a tournament in which Ronaldo was very, very good in and of course got injured

04:22in the final but in the end he got his name on an international trophy and this is what

04:27everyone remembers it for.

04:29And then most recently 2020 or 2021 if you want to be pedantic about it but Italy came

04:34out on top, of course, we all remember this one.

04:36They beat England in the final, it was 1-1 in normal time, then they won on penalties

04:41after England fluffed the lines three consecutive times in a row.

04:44It was a great tournament for the English but an even better one for Roberto Mancini's Italians.

04:49They came out on top and they will be defending their crown in Germany.
