Anwar defends diesel subsidy rationalisation, prioritises public welfare

The government has shown strong political will in carrying out diesel subsidy rationalisation, although the move may not be popular, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.  Anwar said this issue had been discussed for years and prime ministers before him had also agreed that subsidy rationalisation must be implemented. 07:05 In the past, we promised, "Today we win, tomorrow the price of oil will go down."

07:17 That's right. Because at that time, the price of oil was high compared to the oil exporters,

07:24 especially Saudi Arabia.

07:25 When Saudi Arabia was about 50 cents, we were about 1.80 cents.

07:30 Now, as we know, we are 2.05 cents, Saudi Arabia is 2.95 cents.

07:38 So, the price of oil is only being reduced, the cost is increasing.

07:43 How do you then relate the cost in 2008 with 2024?

07:48 It's basic economics.

07:51 But the important thing is, when we raise the subsidy for diesel,
