Let's talk about getting your swing on plane.
00:07
What does that even mean?
00:08
What is swing plane?
00:09
Well, the swing plane is the angle
00:11
at which your club swings around your body.
00:15
And this is generally determined by your spine angle
00:17
initially in the first place.
00:19
It can vary.
00:20
Some people go up on one swing plane and down on another.
00:24
But that's not a very efficient way of swinging.
00:26
So if my posture's really good
00:28
and I'm ready to run somewhere,
00:30
I will swing the club up and down
00:32
on a pretty decent swing plane
00:34
that should end up with me hitting good shots.
00:37
If I haven't tipped myself over,
00:38
so my posture's poor and I'm almost sat down,
00:41
I'm gonna swing the club flatter around my body
00:44
as a natural swing path.
00:46
But my swing plane here
00:48
is never gonna get back down to the ground.
00:51
So I'm gonna have to start making
00:52
some pretty juicy compensatory moves
00:55
to get back to the ball.
00:56
And this is where a lot of faults start to stem.
00:59
Someone who's tipped over way too much,
01:01
we don't see this as much,
01:02
will swing it up and down too steep
01:04
and therefore have to stand up and out of their shot
01:07
so they don't dig a great big hole down to Sydney.
01:10
It is really important
01:12
that you get your fundamentals right to start off with.
01:15
So that's your number one priority
01:16
if you're trying to swing the club on plane.
01:19
A couple of things that you can do
01:20
to ensure that your swing stays on plane
01:23
or goes up and down on a pretty decent plane
01:25
is to first of all check your takeaway.
01:27
So check that very first part of your swing.
01:29
So where the club travels to
01:31
in the first part of your swing
01:32
usually dictates where it goes on the way back.
01:35
So a club that whips on the inside
01:37
will either keep going end up flat
01:39
or you'll learn how to compensate
01:40
and end up lifting up
01:41
and sending the club across the line at the top.
01:44
If a club goes too far on the outside,
01:46
sometimes it can carry on going up quite steep.
01:49
So it's important you get that first little bit right.
01:52
So you can do a little bit of mirror work at home,
01:54
setting yourself up to an imaginary ball on the floor,
01:57
just taking the club to your takeaway point
02:00
and then checking it.
02:01
You do wanna make sure that club head
02:02
stays in front a little bit.
02:05
So that's where you wanna be.
02:06
If you're someone who whips it on the inside too much,
02:08
feel like you go out a bit
02:09
and that should set you in a pretty decent direction
02:12
on the way back.
02:13
Getting your swing more on plane
02:15
can be really down to building
02:17
a nice bit of natural momentum.
02:19
There's a couple of ways that you can do this.
02:21
There are some fantastic gadgets out at the moment.
02:24
Orange whip is one of them.
02:25
This will pretty much swing the golf club for you
02:28
up and down the line that you should be swinging it on.
02:30
But if you don't happen to have one of those
02:32
in your golf bag,
02:33
get your seven and your eight iron,
02:35
hold them as best you can, a bit like a hammer.
02:37
So you've got your two clubs.
02:38
Settle yourself into a decent posture,
02:41
hovering the clubs just above the ground
02:43
and just start to build that basic momentum
02:46
back and through.
02:48
What that'll do from a swing plane point of view
02:50
is start to get you a little bit more on line,
02:54
up and down.
02:56
So it takes a bit of the effort out of it
02:59
and stops you trying to force the issue.
