Leeds locals reflect on National Service proposals

Rishi Sunak wants to reintroduce National Service if he stays as PM post-July. Would you support the idea or not, and why?

00:00A lot of young people nowadays do not want to be involved, including in wars and things.

00:06Granted, it may teach them more responsibility and more discipline,

00:11but no, people nowadays don't want to be in wars.

00:14I think it's a really good idea, I'm quite on board with it.

00:17Mainly I think the idea around social cohesion.

00:20I used to have German friends, they did national service ages ago, they really rated it.

00:24Having said that personally, I don't really trust the Conservative government to be doing it.

00:28I imagine it's going to be certain people who are maybe a bit more deprived,

00:33not as privileged do it, and other people going to work in a bank voluntarily.

00:38I'm not sure here that it would work. I think the volunteering once a month is quite good,

00:42but I also think that, I'm not sure how they're going to enforce it.

00:46A lot of people had a big part of their youth taken away already,

00:50and then to have to get forced into national service is like,

00:55they're just being forced to go from a child basically to an adult.
