00:00
- Okay, so yeah, that's recorded.
00:02
- So if you want to just introduce yourself.
00:04
- Hi, I'm Charlie Bishop, I'm a professional flat jockey.
00:06
I'm here in Portsmouth today using the Jockey Gym.
00:09
- Yeah, we've just been watching you
00:11
kind of going through a bit of a session there.
00:13
It seems like it's not hard work.
00:14
Maybe people don't really appreciate
00:16
how much strength and conditioning
00:17
is required to be a jockey.
00:19
- Yeah, exactly.
00:20
I think certainly the last few years
00:22
jockeys have become a lot fitter
00:24
and obviously with certain jockeys doing that,
00:26
it means to sort of keep up with them
00:28
and be at the top level,
00:30
you need to sort of train hard yourself.
00:31
So it's great to have someone like James
00:33
in this Jockey Gym that they've set up
00:36
for people to see and people to appreciate
00:38
how hard we sort of train behind the scenes
00:40
and especially for myself,
00:41
it's sort of managing weight and fitness.
00:44
So no, it's a great initiative.
00:46
- Yeah, perfect.
00:47
What's kind of your day-to-day workout routine?
00:49
What does that look like?
00:50
- Day-to-day, sort of as we get into the season,
00:52
it becomes a bit less,
00:54
but the buildup to the season,
00:55
we train sort of really hard.
00:57
So sort of through the spring, we train quite hard.
00:59
This time of year, I do quite a lot of cardio,
01:01
so sort of on a bike, a peloton bike at home.
01:03
So I train on that sort of most days
01:06
if I get time between riding out and going racing.
01:08
But yeah, obviously with James and Great British Racing,
01:12
obviously bringing this container with the gym gear
01:16
into sort of race meetings
01:18
and I think they're going to Glorious Goodwood
01:20
and to the York e-ball meeting.
01:22
So it's great for us to get the opportunity
01:24
to train before racing at the track
01:26
and for people to sort of get an insight
01:27
as to what we do.
01:29
- So James Adams,
01:30
head of X-Compete Strength and Conditioning.
01:32
So I'm here with the jockey gym
01:33
with Great British Racing
01:34
and British Champion Series today.
01:36
So I'm a strength and conditioning coach
01:38
for jockeys and equestrian athletes all around the world.
01:41
I have a gym based in Newmarket
01:42
where we train one-to-one in my facility.
01:45
But like I said, it's global as well.
01:46
- Perfect, yeah.
01:47
So do you,
01:49
do you know,
01:49
do you call us jockeys on the circuit?
01:51
Do you work with them?
01:52
- Yeah, so quite a lot of the high-profile jockeys
01:54
come in and around the world,
01:55
which is really cool.
01:56
Dialing down into that niche of the market
01:58
and getting some good results from it.
02:00
- Perfect, perfect.
02:02
That's one of the things I guess
02:02
people don't really know too much about,
02:03
like what the day-to-day workout is for a jockey.
02:06
It's quite surprising how much strength you need.
02:08
- Yeah, so it's a very unique sport in itself.
02:11
They make weight every day.
02:12
So they'll have to cut weight every day.
02:13
This could be three pounds, four pounds, five pounds,
02:15
depending what weight they're riding at.
02:18
So the guys who are a little bit heavier and taller,
02:20
that's obviously one of their main aims is to weight make.
02:23
The guys and girls who are a little bit smaller,
02:25
they can do a little bit more strength training
02:26
and prioritise that.
02:28
There's not really an off-season either for racing.
02:30
So it's all year round,
02:31
whereas football and rugby and other sports,
02:33
obviously we have the pre-season
02:34
where we train really hard
02:36
and then maintain for the season.
02:37
For the jockeys, obviously it's all year round.
02:38
So it's a really hard discipline to get into.
02:41
- Perfect, and you're obviously here in Gunwalt today,
02:43
but I think you're here all weekend as well, is that right?
02:45
- Yeah, here Friday to Sunday with the jockey gym.
02:47
So if you're down in Portsmouth, come down,
02:50
you can take part in some of the challenges.
02:51
I know Joe really enjoyed them.
02:53
Or you can learn a little bit more
02:55
about how the jockeys train
02:56
and how we develop the youngsters coming through too.
02:59
- And travel around the country as well?
03:01
- Yeah, travel around the country.
03:02
So I do quite a bit of work in Dubai over the winter as well.
03:06
And looking to go to Australia this year as well.
03:08
(indistinct chatter)
03:11
- You all right?
03:18
- Yeah.
03:19
- Ready? Three, two, one, go!
03:22
(indistinct chatter)
03:25
- Good, straight into this.
03:47
- What's going on here?
03:48
- That's it.
03:48
So grab that pole, walk forward, squat down nice and deep.
03:51
Do it, push it above your head.
03:53
Lock your arms out.
03:54
Lock your arms out.
03:55
Elbows out.
03:56
- Four, five.
03:57
- Squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat, squat.
03:59
- Eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13.
04:02
- Lock those elbows out.
04:03
Lock those elbows out.
04:04
- 14, 15, 16.
04:06
- Come on, let's go.
04:07
- 15 more, come on, keep going.
04:08
- Squat, squat, squat, squat, squat.
04:10
Lock your elbows out.
04:11
- 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.
04:13
- Squat a little bit more, where's the shake?
04:15
- 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
04:20
- Good job.
04:21
- Good job, well done.
04:22
- They weren't even real ones.
04:23
- They were.
04:24
- They were popping in two seconds.
04:25
- Yeah.
