00:00 We're so glad that you're all with us.
00:02 This is such an important discussion to have, and we know that we're going to have in front
00:07 of us the toughest border security bill in decades tomorrow, negotiated on a bipartisan
00:14 basis, and there's really important provisions in there that relate to fentanyl that all
00:20 of us are affected by and the people we represent.
00:23 I'm so glad my colleagues are here.
00:26 On April 2nd, the Justice Department announced the largest law enforcement seizure of fentanyl
00:32 in the history of Michigan.
00:35 April 2nd.
00:36 40 kilos of fentanyl were found, enough to kill every Michigan resident.
00:41 Pretty serious stuff.
00:43 On April 21, a Michigan medical examiner raised the alarm on a really bad patch of fentanyl,
00:50 as he called it, and warned the public that there had been six overdoses in 11 days.
00:59 These are two headlines from last month, and it does not come close to encapsulate the
01:05 pain and tragedy of Michigan families who faced this issue of drug overdoses over the
01:13 years.
01:14 So we know.
01:15 We're here because we want to combat the fentanyl crisis and give U.S. Customs and Border Protection
01:19 the tools they need to stop the drug from coming across the border.
01:24 And in this bill to combat the fentanyl crisis, it would invest in 2,400 more Customs and
01:32 Border Protection officers, new and innovative equipment to increase detection, drug enforcement
01:39 agency efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks in Mexico, and enhanced lab analysis
01:48 of fentanyl samples.
01:51 So it has been 105 days, 105 days since a strong -- not only bipartisan, you could say
02:01 tripartisan bill -- was brought to the floor of the United States Senate that would make
02:08 a real difference in what we are talking about today.
02:13 And it's time for our Republican colleagues who keep going to the floor and saying somebody
02:17 should do something about the border, somebody should do something about the border.
02:21 Well, 105 days ago, they had a chance to do something.
02:26 Tomorrow, they're going to have another chance, and we hope that they will join us in voting
02:31 yes.
02:32 Senator Shaheen.
02:33 SEN.
02:34 SHAHEEN (R-MEXICO): Thank you, Senator Stabenow.
