His single Clouds gained a lot of media attention on YouTube, before his death in May 2013, aged just 18. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and also became a hit in the United Kingdom, Canada and France. At the age of 14 he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that particularly affects children. In May 2012, doctors they told him he only had a year left to live. Sobiech died on May 20, 2013 from complications of cancer, at his home in Lakeland, a suburb east of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The funeral was held in St. Michael's Catholic Church and his body was interred in St. Michael's Cemetery.
