00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast
00:07here on the CLNS Media Network, presented by our wonderful friends over at Price Picks
00:12and Game Time.
00:14I am Brian Hines, back as always with Alex Barth, and we have lots, or not lots, but
00:21some past news to get to over the past, since we last talked on Monday.
00:26We have Rookie Minicamp coming up this weekend, which we will get into a little bit, and then
00:30we will take some of your questions to kind of wrap this one up.
00:34But we can start with the Patriots front office search and this hunt for a new lead personnel
00:42executive, which probably is going to end with Elliott Wolfe.
00:44But we have an open search because they need to satisfy the Rooney rule and have this search
00:52to promote Elliott Wolfe.
00:55And even if it's not the GM title, it looks like we do have a new title that that will
00:59be, as Albert Breer reported, they actually filed the title with the league as executive
01:05vice president of player personnel.
01:07So as we kind of expected, again, not the exact general manager, but something that
01:11shows who has control over the football operation.
01:15So while it is expected that is going to go to Elliott Wolfe, they are interviewing candidates.
01:21They had three candidates actually declined the chance to interview, but then they had
01:24two candidates they interviewed over the last two days.
01:29That was Eagles executive Brandon Hunt in Carolina or ex Carolina Panthers, kind of
01:34their capologist, their salary cap guy, Samir Suleiman.
01:39So those guys were in, sounded like in Massachusetts, weren't at the stadium, I believe, for it
01:44to interview.
01:45So they had those two guys in for an interview today and yesterday, and that's where this
01:51kind of front office search is at right now.
01:54Yeah.
01:55And I mean, I think it's been made pretty clear at this point whose job this is going
01:58to be.
01:59I don't think that they're not getting interest because nobody wants to work for the Patriots.
02:04I think that the lack of interest is it's been pretty well communicated.
02:09This is going to be Elliott Wolfe's job.
02:12So these guys who are like Trey Brown, for instance, who he's an assistant GM, his next
02:18step up is a general manager job.
02:20So he's not going to come interview for a job he knows he's not going to get now.
02:23When you get to some lower level or currently unemployed staffers, there's maybe a little
02:28more incentive because they know, all right, yeah, the GM job's going to Elliott.
02:33But if I impress them enough, maybe I get a job on Elliott staff.
02:37So I'm just going to have to take over as the director of scouting, for instance, because
02:41Elliott Wolfe is going to, you know, we think be moving on.
02:44Does Matt Groh come back?
02:45There were some reports that he was in the last year of his contract and basically stayed
02:48to finish out this draft.
02:50So I think that's the situation here.
02:53It would be, I can't understate how unorthodox and how troubling it would be for them to
03:02kick Elliott Wolfe to the curb after giving him the keys to the car for this off season.
03:06You're talking about, I mean, I know we don't think that they spent a lot in free agency,
03:10but the players retained Christian Barber, Michael Nguyen, Kyle Duggar, like the money
03:16added up too.
03:17And that they spent some big money this off season, it was the third overall pick in the
03:21draft.
03:22I mean, he has laid the foundation for this franchise for the next five years and that,
03:26you know, hiring coaches, all of it, this is his vision.
03:29So you can't hire somebody with a different vision because you can't do all of that and
03:34then start from scratch again.
03:36In theory, if you're going to have to hire another GM, if you were going to want to hire
03:40another GM, he would essentially have to be okay with Alex Van Pelt, have to be okay with
03:45Drake May, have to be okay with Michael Nguyen with Wright Tackle, have to be okay with Christian
03:48Barber and the defensive staff that set up and like, if that's the guy you want, why
03:54wouldn't it be Elliott Wolfe?
03:57So you know, then the question becomes, well, why didn't they do this whole process earlier
04:02instead of now?
04:03Now it's an issue because they have to get candidates.
04:05There was a report.
04:06I want to say it was the Herald.
04:08It might've been Jonathan Jones, CBS.
04:10Somebody had that.
04:11Basically they started their off season prep and really their draft prep day one.
04:16Like they lost to the jets or I guess it wouldn't be that like they move on from bill in mid
04:20January and then boom, they're right into it.
04:24If they had done this GM search back then, that's, you know, a week, two weeks that you
04:31lose.
04:32Cause you can't, even if you know you're going to give it to Elliott Wolfe, you can't really
04:36have Elliott Wolfe running your draft board while you're doing these investigations.
04:41You're opening yourself up to all kinds of tampering allegations.
04:45So you just don't open the job and Wolfe played such a big part in the coaching search.
04:50Like maybe that even gets, you don't get, you don't get any of that stuff.
04:54I mean, you're a week or two behind on all of that and they were already a week behind
04:58cause they had to wait too.
04:59They had to figure out, you know what they were doing with bill.
05:02So, you know, why do it now instead of then you do have to do this search and yeah, it
05:06looks super weird, but back then you either have to pause your operation or just open
05:12yourself up to a ton of potential tampering investigations.
05:16Can people accuse them of it now?
05:17Yes.
05:18But they were within the rules.
05:19The Rudy rule, as we all know, I, in theory is a good idea, but has some tremendous holes
05:25and it's logic.
05:26Uh, and this is just kind of what that is.
05:29In one way or another, it seems like they were not, it seems like one way or another,
05:33they were going to have to deal with it.
05:35They just waited so that they didn't have to put off actual football decisions to deal
05:39with it.
05:40I think is, I think is essentially what happened here and why this whole thing looks so weird.
05:45Yeah.
05:46Yeah.
05:47They didn't want to have to handle it.
05:48Then, as you said, focus on the football, we'll handle it then.
05:51And then in those two, three months, like Elliot Wolfe has done such a good job.
05:56He's done everything.
05:58Like if that was a trial run, if he was on trial, it makes sense to give him a, this
06:03spot.
06:04But maybe you're looking at, you know, we talked about Brandon Hunts, the Philadelphia
06:07Eagles director of scouting.
06:09They interviewed yesterday, I believe like you're going to need a new director of scouting.
06:13So maybe he's someone that they are eyeing for that role.
06:16Or a Suleiman who was kind of a capologist, as we said, for, for Carolina.
06:21I don't know if they have someone in their front office who, you know, specializes in
06:27that.
06:28I'm sure they have some cap guy, obviously, but maybe that's something, you know, maybe
06:30they're looking to add these two guys who also, I believe they work together, Suleiman
06:34and Hunts.
06:35They worked together in Pittsburgh.
06:36Yeah.
06:37Somebody said that earlier in their, in their tenure.
06:40So maybe you're looking at these two guys to come in here and just compliment Elliot
06:44Wolfe.
06:45Even if like, you know, we know some of these guys have expiring contracts that are currently
06:49here.
06:51Or someone else goes and leaves, you need to replace them, or, or, you know, you just
06:54want to bolster this front office.
06:56And now you're looking at compliments to Wolf.
06:59He gets that executive vice president of football operations or whatever the title was, and
07:04you're kind of filling out your staff with these other guys, which is kind of like the
07:08offensive coordinator search last year, right?
07:10Like we had Adrian Clem come in here to interview for offensive coordinator, and then he gets
07:13the offensive line job, kind of some similarities with that, but maybe that's how they're kind
07:17of looking to build this, uh, build this front office out right now.
07:22Yeah.
07:23That, that, that, that seems like what's going on again.
07:25I just be so massively surprised if the title and we learned today from Albert career, the,
07:30the job, the Patriots filed with the league is executive vice president of player personnel.
07:36So this goes back to something we talked about back in January.
07:39You can call Elliot Wolfe, whatever you want.
07:42I don't care.
07:43It comes down to those responsibilities.
07:45People say over the roster, this is the GM and they're, they're not going to have a title
07:49GM.
07:51Why the crafts don't do that.
07:53I couldn't tell you Orth wine.
07:55Didn't do it either.
07:56Um, uh, Kayim didn't have a GM either.
07:59The Patriots have not employed.
08:00They have not titled a GM since 1990.
08:03And by the way, back then it was the owner's son, Patrick Sullivan.
08:06So, um, they just did.
08:09This is a franchise that doesn't employ GMs.
08:12Couldn't tell you why that is.
08:14It just seems to be a thing.
08:15We're Patriots fans.
08:16Let's wear it as a badge of honor and executive.
08:19So when POE was here, he was the last true like personnel head in conjunction with Don,
08:26you know, Robert Kraft, talk about this a little bit.
08:29What would you say?
08:30Casario Casario worked for bill.
08:32Cause Sarah, cause director of player personnel is, is essentially the assistant GM.
08:37That's basically what that job is.
08:38Caesarea worked for bill.
08:39Now how they divvied up the responsibilities.
08:42He maybe had more responsibilities than most other people in the league in that title,
08:46but bill had final say over the roster.
08:48I'm talking about the only person who could push bill on that.
08:52As long as he was here.
08:53And I don't know what the exact, it still might've been bill who had final say, but
08:57your craft talked about this the day that they parted ways with bill about how bill
09:00kind of built up that power over time.
09:02And it was really after the third super bowl that he became fully in charge.
09:06Scott Piolli was the vice president of player personnel when he left in 2008.
09:12Vice president for player personnel.
09:14So they've added that executive term.
09:16What that means again, couldn't tell you don't know, but Scott Piolli.
09:21So that that's the last time they had anybody in a role sort of like this, where it wasn't
09:26the head coach who had complete power.
09:28So the Elliot Wolf is going to have when it, in the, I don't know that we'll ever get an
09:35answer to this.
09:36Cause some teams have it where the GM has say over the 90 man roster, but the head coach
09:41has say over the 53 man roster and Brear actually added to his tweet.
09:47He said for the structure of that, for that executive vice president of player personnel,
09:54it said hit that person.
09:56Andrew odd male were both report to ownership, but the EVP of player personnel is expected
10:01to have final say on the 53 man roster, as well as oversight on the cap analytics, et
10:07cetera.
10:08Sounds like it's going to be kind of a mix, but if it comes down to, you know, that final
10:12say it's going to be Wolf or that executive vice president.
10:16Right?
10:17So the only thing is like coaches, the time the coaches have the biggest impact on roster
10:21say is at the end of camp when it comes to cut down day, because they're the ones on
10:24the field.
10:25They're the ones who know, like, these are the guys you want to work with.
10:26This is what we want to do.
10:27But yeah, it sounds like it's ultimately going to come down to Elliot Wolf to figure that
10:31all out.
10:32That is essentially what a general manager would do.
10:35They're just, I don't know, for whatever reason, not calling it general manager.
10:39I'll do people want to make this about the crafts too.
10:41I'll say this.
10:42They don't want to sign the general manager title because the crafts want the ability
10:45to step in and make big personnel decisions where it's needed.
10:49If you had both and some organizations have both vice president of player personnel out
10:55ranks general manager.
10:58This is essentially a cam Neely sort of role.
11:03This isn't, um, Dawn Sweeney.
11:06This would be the cam Neely equivalent just without a Dawn Sweeney.
11:09So the crafts can step in with the GM.
11:14They can step in with an EVP of player personnel.
11:17That doesn't matter.
11:18And to this one, they can step in wherever they want to.
11:22They don't want to pay.
11:23It's, I would assume Wolf is getting compensated as a GM would.
11:27Like I, I, I can't imagine he would go in there and accept less for what's essentially
11:32a greater title.
11:33Yeah.
11:34I, maybe it has something to do with, you know, media availability.
11:38Maybe it has something to do with structuring the organization elsewhere.
11:42I don't know.
11:43I couldn't tell you, but I don't think it costs them any less money and it doesn't make
11:47Elliot Wolf any less powerful than if they just named him GM.
11:51It's just the thing that they, for whatever.
11:54And again, it's not just them.
11:55The two previous owners did it.
11:57The last GM was Sullivan.
11:59It's a weird thing.
12:01I'll say this for Patriots fans, just where does badge of honor, Oh, your team has a general
12:05manager.
12:06That's adorable.
12:07Couldn't be us.
12:08Right.
12:09Wouldn't know.
12:10We don't need a GM.
12:11Get out.
12:12We have, we have an executive vice president GM.
12:13Get out of here.
12:14We have an EVP.
12:15Yeah.
12:16Yeah.
12:17Throw it.
12:18You could throw it in the chats.
12:19You're tinfoil hat conspiracy theories and why it's different title, but there really
12:23isn't I I'd be shocked if it means less money or less power because everything about that
12:28role elsewhere says that it doesn't.
12:32Yeah.
12:33Maybe it's just, I mean, theoretically they could make him the EVP of player personnel
12:37and then name one of these guys that are interviewing general manager.
12:40Like they could actually do that.
12:42You're right.
12:43So that would leave the door open for something like that.
12:45That's not a bad, bad, but I mean, it's still probably wouldn't be the general manager title
12:50because they just don't like that, but maybe it's something else.
12:54Another one of these fancy, fancy titles that, you know, so just maybe it's how they want
12:58to structure this thing or whatever.
13:00We've got AVP and EVP.
13:02Let's get the merge drop going.
13:04There you go.
13:05Love that.
13:06AVP, EVP.
13:07We can come up with a word on play for that or something, but yeah.
13:10But yeah, that's the, um, that's the search up to date search.
13:15Two guys, Brandon Hunt, Samir Suleiman have interviewed, uh, three guys did turn it down.
13:22So they should, they are Rooney rule compliant now, I believe.
13:26Yes.
13:27Yes.
13:28So assuming they did the second interview, I didn't notice in the report, did they say
13:31that it's scheduled or it's done with Suleiman?
13:35Completed interviews.
13:36Okay.
13:37So yeah.
13:38Okay.
13:39So they should be, they should be compliant at this point.
13:40So yeah, that could happen.
13:41They could make a decision now at any point here, but that's kind of up to date with the
13:46front office search again.
13:48Would be shocked.
13:49Absolutely shocked.
13:50If it doesn't.
13:51Actually, I don't know if Elliot has, has anybody said if Elliot Wills formally interviewed?
13:56I don't think so.
13:59Because I think he technically had, they have to like interview him to like technically.
14:03So maybe that's already been done because Breyer said they completed the interviews
14:08with Suleiman and hunt.
14:10And then he said in parentheses, Elliot Wolf remains a strong candidate.
14:13So yeah, I haven't seen anything that says he's actually interviewed for the job.
14:18And I mean, you know, craft walks by him in the hall and says hello and they could say
14:22that's the interview, but, uh, you want the job.
14:25Okay.
14:27So drink me a good pick, right?
14:30How'd we do?
14:31Um, yeah, that might have to be, um, just an official, you know, we may have to wait
14:37on that.
14:38And this is a fair question.
14:39I'll answer this since they aren't handing out a GM title, why do they have to be real
14:42compliant?
14:43The rule is general manager or a leading front office executive position.
14:49So because it's not the title, it's the equivalent level sort of thing.
14:56So, uh, good question, but that it it's, it's the position, not the title that they have
15:00to be compliant for.
15:01So if they wanted to call the head coach, the vice president of game day football operations,
15:05uh, they would still have to be running real compliant for that.
15:08Yep.
15:09Yeah.
15:10So let's do that.
15:11Maybe a team should hire their next head coach and not we're not hiring a coach.
15:15We're not hiring a head coach.
15:16We're just hiring our game day executive vice president of sideline game day football operations.
15:24Oh my gosh.
15:25Well, we didn't do it.
15:27So who's going to do it if the pats didn't do it, that would be the Patriots thing.
15:31I mean, who are the craziest owners in the NFL?
15:33Like the Panthers.
15:34Yeah.
15:35Oh yeah.
15:36Panthers.
15:37And they love that whole corporate or, um, uh, isn't the guy that bought, uh, how'd Harris
15:41Josh Harris make his money?
15:43He's like super corporate, right?
15:47I don't know.
15:49Is he tied in?
15:50Is he tied into Amazon or am I just thinking that because some people thought Bezos was
15:55going to win the team.
15:58I was going to say Amazon when you saw some private equity firm.
16:02So he's super corporate, he's wall street.
16:05It could totally be.
16:06Yeah.
16:07The Washington, you are the man game day manager operations of the Washington football team
16:18all the trainer, like the, um, director of bumps and bruises.
16:23Oh my gosh.
16:26Okay.
16:27But yeah.
16:28Okay.
16:29That's the up-to-date, uh, word where we're at right now on the Patriots front office
16:32search.
16:33Uh, let's take a very quick break.
16:34We'll hear from our friends over at fan duel, and then we can talk a little rookie mini

24:55It's going to be a lot of fun.
24:56Those are the highlights of Saturday night.
25:22I'm
25:24Two kickers too.
25:26I was just going through that.
25:29That'll be interesting.
25:30But I feel like it's sly and um, it's sly and I don't, I don't think a third
25:38kicker, they're not going to carry a third kicker in camp.
25:40They have too many other things.
25:40They got to figure out to carry 30 and you got to have reps for everybody.
25:45Like three kickers would be three kickers would be a ton of reps to go around.
25:50And then I'm going to have to write the column about why they should
25:53keep three kickers, just like I did last year with the two kickers.
25:56It's going to be a whole other thing.
25:57I wouldn't do that.
25:58We were complaining about the reps.
26:00Uh, last year with two of them too, because they couldn't move the ball in
26:05preseason and then they kept trying to Nick Folk out there for some reason,
26:09uh, to have the preseason kicks and like Ryland hit like one extra point,
26:13all of preseason, and we were talking about the reps there.
26:15So, uh, they have Vincent Blanchard coming in from Canada and then Noah
26:21Rauschenberg from North Texas.
26:23So they'll have two kickers there.
26:24Maybe we'll get some, uh, kicking competition, but yeah, seeing one, one
26:28of those guys being a late add to the roster with Joey sly and Ryland here.
26:32That, that would kind of be a surprise, but we'll see maybe one of
26:36them just blows it away out there.
26:38I don't, I don't think it's going to rain anymore.
26:40No, it's going to be, it's supposed to rain Thursday and Friday, but I don't
26:46think we're going to be in the rain now, which is nice.
26:48Always.
26:48I'll, I'll always take that.
26:50Yeah.
26:51Not too hot either.
26:53It could be a nice little day out there, but, uh, yeah.

29:13All right.
29:14So this is a good place to start again.
29:17We'll do a little Q and a, if you guys want to drop anything in the chat, it
29:20can be any Boston sports related as well, but, um, yeah, from Calvin Anderson.
29:27Uh, Chris price over at the Boston globe had a wonderful article.
29:32Uh, yesterday, I believe, or, or Monday, but he had a wonderful article on Calvin
29:35Anderson and that serious illness he battled last year.
29:38Uh, he, uh, had a battle with malaria, uh, after a mosquito bite, when he
29:43traveled over to Africa, I believe right before training camp kind of started.
29:48Uh, and then of course we didn't see him during training camp.
29:50He came back right away, got thrusted into action, didn't play gray as you
29:55would expect someone who went through that situation, I think he had what
29:59Chris say, like a one Oh five, one Oh six fever during that time.
30:03So it took a lot out of him.
30:04And then he, you know, once he got out of the hospital, he, he, he, he
30:08you know, once he got back, then he suffered kind of a heart, a bruised
30:11heart condition that he suffered in practice.
30:13So, uh, he went through a lot last year, Calvin Anderson, but he's back healthy.
30:18Now he's been a full participant in the off season program, uh, uh, through this
30:24off season, so are you kind of expecting anything from him because they still
30:28need tackles, they still need offensive tackles.
30:30Are you expecting anything from him, uh, now that he's healthy and
30:33kind of full go here for, for 2024?
30:36Yeah, look, he's going to be in the mix for that left tackle spot.
30:39Cause unlike the other top two guys, Okorafor and Caden Wallace,
30:42he's actually played left tackle.
30:43And I'll be honest, you know, coming out of last year, you heard he had this, you
30:47know, really tough, difficult medical condition.
30:49Anytime you hear that, you wonder realistically if a guy can keep playing,
30:53but to hear the story behind it, you know, hear the work he's putting in,
30:56he seems determined to keep playing.
30:59So I think if, if, if this is his mindset, if this is where he's coming from, you
31:03absolutely have to count him into that left tackle competition because everybody
31:06knows where I'm at on that.
31:07Right.
31:07I don't love what they have at that position right now.
31:09So Calvin Anderson, you could argue is the best left tackle they have
31:15until we see otherwise, right.
31:17And whether or not, you know, that ends up being proven the case, but right now
31:21he's played it and he's played it not terribly limited, but he's done it.
31:26So I think you, I don't know what to expect because again, what
31:29kind of physical shape is he in?
31:31And even within that, like we didn't see him a ton last year.
31:34He didn't play super regularly for the Broncos.
31:36And we kind of have an idea of what kind of player he is, but you
31:40know, in theory he could be growing.
31:42So I don't know exactly what to expect, but he should absolutely be given a, as
31:47much of a chance as anybody to win that, that left tackle spot.
31:51Yeah.
31:51Yeah.
31:52I mean, I know last year it wasn't great on the field, but you know, he went
31:55through all that, but he had some intriguing flashes in Denver before he
31:59signed here and one of the interesting parts of Chris, Chris's story, I thought
32:04was, you know, he, he came back week one, he played like wire to wire and then he
32:10played most of week two and then he went back to the bench cause you know, he had
32:13to get his conditioning back, but it sounded like they were about ready to
32:16put them back in the starting lineup.
32:18Didn't it seem like that?
32:19Cause he said he was repping.
32:20He was back in with the starters at tackle, uh, midway in the season there
32:25and practice, and then he got hit in the chest and had that heart condition.
32:28So it sounded like they were at least ready at some point last year to put him
32:32back, uh, in the starting lineup and back at a starting tackle.
32:36So he is the only one with left tackle, like significant left
32:40tackle experience on, on this roster.
32:42So maybe if he gives you more of what he showed in Denver, now that he's, you
32:46know, you, you hope he's healthy, that he can be in that mix, even if it's
32:51not a starting spot, like maybe he's your top, top swing tackle, or is
32:56he's your number four tackle?
32:57Cause you need as many tackles as possible.
32:59As we learned, uh, the last few years depth at that position, uh, you can
33:02never have, uh, you know, you can never have too much depth at that spot.
33:06So it'll be interesting to see what, what he looks like now, uh, with hopefully
33:10what is a full and healthy off season, but, um, Taekwondo and do we keep him
33:19as a speed back for basically a practice wide receiver speed, or what's your
33:25kind of role thinking for Taekwon Thornton this year?
33:29Um, if he makes the team, I don't think you would keep him just for his speed.
33:34Like you can go out and get a guy who ran a four, two and signed to the
33:38practice squad and have him for your scout team or Jalen Rager who's there
33:42as a kick return, like you don't need Taekwon Thornton is going to
33:45have to earn a spot on the team.
33:47He's going to have to prove he's one of the best five receivers on the roster.
33:50Cause you look at it, the two rookies, Kendrick born are roster locks
33:56and then KJ Osborne's up there.
33:59Um, Oh, and sorry.
34:00No, I got that wrong.
34:01Uh, DeMario Douglas, Kendrick born.
34:03The two rookies are roster locks.
34:05KJ Osborne is up there.
34:06So at the very least has to outplay KJ Osborne.
34:09And then it's, you know, Rager adds the values of kick returner.
34:14Juju Smith Schuster just is a better, has proven to be a better receiver.
34:17He's more of a veteran presence.
34:19Like these are the guys he's going to have to beat out.
34:21He has no guaranteed money on his contract.
34:22They can move on from him like that.
34:24And he's just gone.
34:25So I, yeah, I, you don't need to keep him on the practice squad.
34:28Now, could they cut him inside into the practice squad?
34:31Yes.
34:31That's totally an option.
34:32I think he probably gets on to a team is 53 or he may just not want to
34:36come back here on the practice squad, but you can go out and get a guy that
34:39runs a, you know, four, three inside of the press squad and have him for the
34:43scout team that doesn't need to be Taekwon Thornton.
34:45Yeah.
34:46Yep.
34:46And you have one, as you said, with Rager who brings value
34:49elsewhere on special teams.
34:51So he, it's an uphill battle battle for Taekwon.
34:53He needs a very good kind of summer all, all around to make a push for this team.
34:58But, uh, what the guys, the pats have on the offensive line, what offensive
35:02system or scheme would be best fit.
35:05So they're running that wide zone.
35:07Uh, you know, Alex, Sam Peltz bringing that wide zone scheme
35:10from, from Cleveland that they ran.
35:12But do you think that's the best scheme fit for these guys up front?
35:18Uh, pretty much, you know, I don't, they'll, they'll have to get there.
35:21You know, you're not going to build the whole offense out in a year, but.
35:26It, it, it's tough to say there's still some guys, Michael and
35:29Wendell, David Andrews, who can run old school power, but also this
35:33is what they're going to run.
35:34And this is, you know, they're, they're running wide zone.
35:36So it's going to have to be wide zone.
35:38You're not going to tell Alex van Pelt to throw away his entire
35:43philosophy for the 2024 Patriots.
35:46Instead, what you're going to do is over the two or three years is this
35:50foundation, Elliot Wolf, Gerard Mayo foundation gets going.
35:53You're going to tailor it more towards what you want on a run.
35:56Yeah.
35:57I think that's kind of what a winner said when we talked to him last week.
36:00He's like, we're football players.
36:01We're going to run what she, what you tell us to run.
36:04So, uh, it is going to be that wide zone, uh, outside zone.
36:09Um, and they, they have to, it's going to take some time as we saw a couple
36:14of years ago, when they tried to install that, it takes some time.
36:17Mondra said that too, to, you know, iron out all the kinks, but the, that
36:21is the, uh, that's the seam or the scheme they are working with now in
36:25the run game, but, uh, to the defense who starts opposite Christian
36:30Gonzalez at cornerback.
36:33This is a great question.
36:35This is a great question.
36:36I don't know.
36:36You know, it really, this starts in the slot.
36:40What's their plan in the slot.
36:41Do they trust Marcus Jones, the full-time slot corner to
36:44replace Myles Bryant or no.
36:45If they do it's Jonathan Jones.
36:48That's easy.
36:50If Jonathan Jones is going to move back into the slot.
36:53Now it's that group that we've been talking about of Alex Austin,
36:56Marco Wilson, Marcella style, Mikey Victor.
37:00Um, uh, why am I blanking on his name?
37:02The kid from Jackson state who got hurt last year as a, as a Bolden.
37:08Yep.
37:09Thank you.
37:09It's it's that group and whoever emerges in that group and it may not
37:13be one definitive second corner.
37:15It may be two or three guys rotating depending on the matchups and fatigue.
37:19So this is a really good question.
37:21We're not going to know until we get to camp, but the big, it starts in the slot.
37:26We have to know what they're doing in the slot before we know what they're
37:28doing with their second outside guy.
37:30If I had to guess right now, I think I would say Jonathan Jones, but as you
37:36said, like there are a lot of kind of moving parts, uh, that can, that can
37:39change.
37:40So yeah, that, that's a big thing.
37:42That's going to be on all of our kind of checklists to watch when, when
37:45training camp opens up, that that's a big piece of the puzzle.
37:47But, uh, Antonio sparked a Celtics debate in our chat.
37:53Uh, does Jason Tatum worry you with how he's been playing?
37:57Yes and no.
37:58You know, I, I think a big problem the last two years was when he was cold, when
38:06he couldn't score, he didn't know what to do with himself and the entire team
38:11would suffer for it.
38:12What he started doing this year is figuring out ways to impact the game
38:16without scoring.
38:17He was big on the glass last night.
38:18He was big defensively inside last night and he, he was moving the ball.
38:22Well, so I, you're not going to win a title, you know, on the path to a
38:27title, you're not going to have your superstar score 35, 40 points.
38:31Every game there's going to be nights like last night, there's that screenshot
38:34going around, right?
38:35Where he's triple teamed.
38:36There are going to be nights where he just doesn't have it.
38:39And for him to impact the game the way he did without putting up a ton in terms
38:45of points is a encouraging development.
38:50That being said, when we get a little later on, like he's going to, there
38:55are going to be games where they just need him to outduel Jalen Bronson.
38:58Period.
38:59You know, if it's the Timberwolves in the finals, he's going to need
39:01to outduel Anthony Edwards, period.
39:05This kind of, you know, 18.11 rebound night isn't going to pass.
39:09So he hasn't had that big breakout game yet in the playoffs.
39:13They haven't.
39:14The question is, is it because they haven't needed him to, or because
39:16he hasn't been able to do it?
39:17I haven't felt like they've needed him to do it personally.
39:21This year, this year.
39:23Yes, this year, just this year.
39:24So like we all know last year he was struggling in that six or series.
39:27And then it was overtime in game six and then game seven, he just
39:30flipped the switch and took over.
39:32So I'd like to believe he can do that again, but he, he didn't shoot the ball.
39:36Well, great.
39:37He didn't shoot the ball.
39:37Great.
39:38Last night, especially from deep, like he is going to need to be better.
39:41There are going to be nights where I guess the, the crux of this whole point
39:45is there, they took him away last night.
39:49The cows took him away.
39:50They made him an option and he figured out other ways to contribute, which is good.
39:53He wasn't doing that in the past, but the next level of that is there are going to
39:58be games where even when the other team is focusing solely on taking him away, he's
40:03still going to have to figure out a way to drop 35.
40:05That's just, it's going to need to happen at some point.
40:08Last night didn't need to be that game.
40:09Cause Jalen Brown was rolling.
40:11Derek White was rolling.
40:13That game's going to happen.
40:14And yeah, I am curious what's going to happen when that situation presents
40:18itself, given the way the playoffs have started.
40:21Yep.
40:22Great with you there, but, uh, we can hit it maybe a few more Patriots ones.
40:27We don't want to, there's a good question up here.
40:28Xavier Howard, would we sign saving Howard for quarterback, uh, cornerback
40:32too, he's not, does he have a bunch of injury issues and some off field stuff
40:36going on?
40:38I believe so.
40:40He's hurt, right?
40:41He ended the year hurt or did he not?
40:45Well, so, okay.
40:45So three, three days ago, Pellicero noted, sorry, three days ago, Pellicero
40:50noted that he's medically cleared.
40:52And when you have somebody noting that about a free agent, uh, generally
40:56that's a message that's trying to be sent.
40:58So yeah, I, I forget what it is.
40:59There's some medical thing there.
41:01Um, yeah, I, if you can get him for the minimum, bring him.
41:04He's one of those guys.
41:05If you can get him for the minimum, bring him into camp.
41:06Sure.
41:07I wouldn't throw a bag at him.
41:09Yeah.
41:11Yeah, I agree with you there.
41:12I could definitely see them like day before, a few days before training
41:16camp, kind of adding a, uh, like, uh, like JC Jackson might still even be on
41:21their radar and that department just bring it.
41:24I'm good.
41:24I'm Jason Jackson.
41:25I like, I like the kids.
41:27They have like the young, the young guys at the, uh, at that spot.
41:30So when they said, you know, they want to play, uh, play the young guys, play the
41:36kids.
41:36So, uh, I'm encouraged by like the Alex Austin's Isaiah bold and see what those
41:40guys can give you there, but maybe, maybe they do sign a veteran late there.
41:45Along the same lines, he's cooked.
41:48He's done.
41:49If, if he was, if he could give you anything, he'd be on the jets right now.
41:53They just drafted a tackle.
41:55So he's definitely, he's been dealing with this.
41:59He's, uh, I just want to find out how old he is.
42:01So I don't get it wrong, but he's up there.
42:03He's he's, I know he's in at least his mid thirties.
42:05Yeah.
42:06So he's 32.
42:08He's going into it.
42:09It'll be his age 33 season.
42:11He's been battling the same knee injury for really the last three years.
42:17It's played like 10 games the last three years, right?
42:2012 games, 12 games total.
42:22Last three years, one game in 21.
42:24So he played 12 games, got hurt at the end of 2020.
42:27He played one game in 21, 11 games in 22, and then just one game last year.
42:33Yeah, I, and it's, he's battling a knee injury.
42:37I, he, you want to bring him into camp, kick the tires, go for it.
42:41I wouldn't give him a dollar guarantee.
42:42Like I just, I, he seems to be kind of cooked at this point.
42:45Who was the, uh, it was two or three years ago.
42:49Remember they signed Jared Veltier.
42:51Yeah.
42:52And then he just like retired or something midway through the year.
42:55He signed with the Broncos.
42:56He came back.
42:57So they're going to brand in Bakhtiari.
42:59He's going to retire.
43:00And then he's going to sign with the jets in like week 12.
43:04Uh, when, who, who did he get Morgan Moses or Tyrone Smith?
43:10Yeah, they're both old with injuries, but, um, back to the corner conversation.
43:17This is the one, Stefan Gilmore.
43:19If they're going to sign a veteran, actually give a guy some money.
43:21It's Stefan Gilmore.
43:22That's the guy.
43:23It's not just the dream correct answer.
43:25Yeah.
43:26Yeah.
43:26I'd still love Gilmore or if you could add Justin Simmons to the
43:30secondary, that would be home run home run in that, uh, back to the O line.
43:36Quick.
43:37Is this your week one line?
43:39Caden Wallace left tackle city.
43:41So left guard, he said either, either Andrews at center, uh, that's David
43:46Andrew and then Leighton Robinson at right guard and I'm guessing he
43:50met Mike on when he was right.
43:51That's my good one.
43:52All right.
43:52Tackle.
43:53Um, I'd keep city.
43:55So at right guard, cause he was good there last year.
43:58If you want to tell me Leighton Robinson's our second best guard, I
44:00don't think you're necessarily wrong.
44:02Um, Caden Wallace left tackle scares me.
44:05It's I gotta see it.
44:06I gotta see it before I can believe it.
44:08Career right tackle.
44:09Yeah.
44:11How big of a role do you expect Jaheim bell to have?
44:15And could he beat out Austin Hooper for a tight end to right out
44:18of the gate there as a rookie?
44:22Yeah.
44:23Uh, that's, you know, a great, a great question.
44:26Again, it, we need to get to camp.
44:28What is his role going to be?
44:30I don't think they're going to use him as a traditional tight end.
44:32Yeah.
44:32I think he's going to have his own sort of unique role that will be
44:35part-time tight end, part-time H backs and fullback, things like that.
44:40So I don't think it's a matter of beating out Austin Hooper for tight end too.
44:43I think it's just a matter of proving he can be impactful enough that it's worth
44:47the team's time to keep him around and keep those unique things in the playbook
44:51because they'll be beneficial.
44:54Yep.
44:54I think he's going to have a role.
44:56Like, I think he's going to make the team and have a role cause he just
44:58brings like so much more juice to that tight end room that, you know, Austin
45:02Hooper and Hunter Henry don't.
45:04And I think he's like, he's great after the catch.
45:07I think he'd be a really good fit.
45:09You know, van Pelt loves those kind of bootlegs and you know, those short
45:13little dump offs and he's a great kind of skillset to have, or, you know, you
45:17can have may on a bootleg, dump it off and let your heme bell create out of
45:21the catch or create after the catch.
45:23So I think he'll have a role.
45:26It probably will like, won't be a major role as, as you know, a rookie right
45:30out of the gate and the blocking still, like he's not going to be an inline
45:33blocker, so that's where, you know, Austin Hooper is probably going to be
45:37your main guy there, but it'll be exciting to see how they plan on using
45:41them.
45:41And I do think as we stand here now, like I think he'd make the 53 and have
45:46a role kind of in this offense right away.
45:48So he's an exciting player to kind of watch throughout the summer.
45:53Uh, let's end here.
45:56Can the Bruins win it all with Jeremy Superman Swayman?
46:02I mean, they can look.
46:03If he's playing, so I watched, um, Rangers hurricanes, whatever that was
46:08Sunday game, one of that series.
46:11And I'm watching that.
46:12Like, I don't know how the Bruins can beat the Rangers.
46:16That team is on another level.
46:18They are so deep.
46:20They are so skilled, unbelievable goal.
46:23Tedding's excellent.
46:24But we, it's such a cliche, but it's, it's, it's said a lot for a reason.
46:29If you have a hot goalie in the playoffs, he can carry you.
46:34And the way Jeremy Swayman's playing right now, he's playing
46:37cup champion level hockey.
46:39Now he's got to maintain that they're what?
46:42Five wins in at a 16.
46:44They've got a long way to go.
46:47If Swayman's going to play like this, they can win the whole thing.
46:49If they get 16 games, this Jeremy Swayman, they can win the whole thing.
46:55But that's, that's what it's going to take because anything short of that,
46:58he falls, even if he does that, I think it's going to be tough when you go up
47:02against some of these, and I mean, Toronto's an elite offensive team, but
47:04they're Toronto when you go up against New York, if you have to face a team
47:08like a Colorado or an Edmonton, if you get to the cup final, right, you can
47:15only allow Jeremy Swayman to face 35 shots a game so many times.
47:19So Swayman's the only reason I think they have a chance, but even still,
47:24I, it, it feels like a slim chance.
47:27Yeah.
47:28Yeah.
47:28They're definitely not, not the favorites.
47:30Although if you keep getting Justin Brazzo and Mason, Laura, I, and
47:35Morgan geeky scoring goals every night, then, uh, that's your, that's your
47:39alternate path.
47:39I mean,
47:41Oh, he's been phenomenal.
47:43Yeah.
47:44Like since, well, game two or three, he got plugged in and round one.
47:47He's been very good for that, which is exactly what they needed, right.
47:51They needed to kind of shore up that top four on D and like, he's stepped up to
47:57the challenge, kind of big game player.
47:59It seems like at 23 years old and it's perfect timing because Charlie McAvoy
48:03isn't playing well, like campus Lindholm.
48:05He had a big game seven, but he's been kind of up and down in the playoffs.
48:08So like Mason, Laura, I playing this well has been huge for them and on that back
48:12end.
48:12And I think the thing about Laura and me is when he was up at the beginning of
48:16the season, I remember people wanted to keep him up and they sent him back down.
48:19The big issue he, he was holding his own in the offensive zone.
48:23It was in his own defensive zone that he was struggling, but so was every
48:26single one of their defensemen right now.
48:27So you might as well just throw him out there.
48:29Cause it McAvoy has been brutal.
48:32Linholm.
48:32Yes.
48:32Had some big moments in game seven, but he's been meh.
48:36Um, yeah, I,
48:42Carlo's been fine.
48:43Brandon Carlos has been, has been throughout his whole career, which is
48:45fine, except he's scoring goals now, two goals and five or, uh, eight games in
48:52the playoffs, that's just, that's what you do when you're a new dad, dad's
48:57baby, power of friendship and power of a new baby in the Bruins world.
49:01That's what they're surviving on right now.
49:02But yeah.
49:03Um, all right, let's go watch the Bruins game puck drops in 30 minutes.
49:07So well, 45 minutes.
49:09Cause of these stupid TV networks.
49:11Very true.
49:12Very true.
49:12But I think ESPN and then.
49:19Game three is TNT is much worse with that.
49:22ESPN is usually like 10 minutes.
49:23TNT is like 25 minutes.
49:25Yeah.
49:25I think, yeah, I think it's ESPN tonight and then TNT on Friday.
49:29So, uh, but we will be back next week.
