00:00Well, looking at VAR, obviously it's become this thing where we are sort of talking about it every week.
00:07It's the sort of headlines on Match of the Day, on all your sort of football highlight shows.
00:12It's something that when it was brought in, you didn't want this to be the outcome of it.
00:17And it's, you know, overall, it's been absolutely shocking really at times this season with some of the decisions.
00:24What's your thoughts on it? Where do you think the future lies for it?
00:28Because I know people have stopped sort of sitting on the fence with it and they are very pro or con for VAR.
00:35I'll be honest, I've never liked it. I don't like a technology where it's subjective, to be honest with you.
00:44You know, in cricket, you know, if there's a hawk I used, it's pretty much bank on it, isn't it?
00:51Football, especially tackles, etc. Maybe offside is a little bit different, but tackles, etc.
00:57They're objective or, you know, subjective, I beg your pardon.
01:02And for me, you've got a referee who's doing that anyway.
01:06And then, you know, the whole thing of slowing images down and getting the ref to go and look at the screen when it's slowed down.
01:13And it makes it look worse and refs having to go to the screen.
01:18I can't. I've got to go with what my colleagues are saying here. I can't stick with the original decision.
01:23I think in a nutshell, I'm still in favour of VAR. I still think it has its purpose.
01:27I think the footballing world has invested a lot of time and effort into VAR.
01:33We can't just sack it off because, you know, it hasn't worked. I think we need to make it work, essentially.
01:39I think VAR has just changed the conversation about refereeing, hasn't it?
01:44Because it's added more scrutiny on the referees for a start because, as you kind of said, there's a feeling that they shouldn't get things wrong.
01:52That's not going to be the case. They're always going to get things wrong.
01:55It's never, you know, I think that the football fans holding out for the day that their team get 100% of decisions right throughout the season.
02:02Well, until we have robots refereeing it, even they might get things wrong anyway.
02:06But, you know, it's not going to happen.
02:08If it were up to me, VAR would be binned off as soon as humanly possible.
02:13But let's be realistic here. The Premier League simply aren't going to get rid of it.
02:17Too many major leagues across Europe are using it. It's very rare that any leagues will disagree with having it.
02:23It's just part of the modern day. And, of course, semi-automated offside.
02:26The plan is already in place for that to come in next season.
02:29I think we need to take a look at that first, see how much of an impact that can have and whether we can have a little bit more rulings around the handball rule that's always so controversial.
02:38But I just think in terms of the fan point of view here, getting rid of the initial celebrations and the feeling that you can properly celebrate a goal, it's just not worth it, is it, for a few more correct decisions?
02:51And to be honest, I don't think we're even reaching that many better decisions.
02:54If anything, there's more controversy now with an added layer of officiating.
