Scenes from 1997 as Sunderland fans said goodbye to the famous old ground.
Transcript
00:00 Goodbye Roker Park. It was in May 1997 that we said one last farewell to the ground which
00:08 has hosted Sunderland matches for almost 100 years. The fans turned out in force to watch
00:16 the last league match against Everton on May 3rd that year. One even came from Australia.
00:25 The team rewarded them with a 3-0 win. Days later, on May 13th, the fans were back. Liverpool
00:33 were the opponents and Sunderland won 1-0 on a day of parades, fun, chanting and emotional
00:41 memories. Peter Reid waved, Charlie Hurley lifted the centre spot and some fans stayed
00:49 until late into the night, knowing it was the last chance to reminisce. Roker Park had
00:55 served us well and it was time to move on. If you were a face in the crowd in 1997, tell
01:03 us more by emailing chris.cordner@nationalworld.com.
