Ghana’s Eco Hospital helps patients heal

The Eco Hospital in Wa in northwestern Ghana uses the healing power of nature to treat the patients. They get to spend time outdoors, play with the hospital pet animals, and help harvest fresh produce in the kitchen garden.

00:25 and ointment is applied when necessary.

00:28 But in the Eco Hospital, that's only half

00:30 of the road to recovery.

00:34 It's time for our nature tour.

00:38 Eugene Bamuna suffers from high blood pressure and knee

00:41 problems, but he's going outdoors anyway

00:44 as part of his treatment.

00:47 Accompanied by human health care workers, of course,

00:50 Eugene is going to feed the non-human staff.

00:55 Just like I was feeding them, I was

00:58 very happy and the way they were behaving.

01:01 So it takes you a diversion.

01:03 It diverts your mind from the sickness

01:05 for some time at least.

01:08 And the garden of the Eco Hospital

01:10 is environmentally friendly too.

01:13 No chemicals are used.

01:14 Organic corn, lettuce, and wild cabbage

01:17 are a healthy addition to hospital meals.

01:20 Eugene Bamuna benefits from being in these surroundings

01:23 and helping with the harvest.

01:25 We do not claim that the environment will completely

01:28 provide healing, but we are certain

01:31 that the patients recovering in environments like this,

01:35 watching their facial expression of happiness,

01:38 engaging nature, and all these things

01:40 contribute in a way towards the general well-being

01:44 of the people who receive services

01:46 within this environment.

01:49 These catfish are also part of the nature tour.

01:53 They'll soon be ending up on the patients' plates

01:56 or will be sold to help fund the Eco Hospital.
