Who's there?
01:01
Officer Fothel-Whistle of the Canadian Mountain.
01:04
Hello, officer.
01:08
Good evening, Mr. Snavely.
01:10
Is it still snowing?
01:11
I don't know. To tell you the truth, I never looked.
01:14
Did you get your man?
01:15
Well, not yet, but I got my own.
01:18
Well, that's something.
01:20
You pulling out?
01:22
Figuring on going over the rim tonight.
01:25
How's your son, Chester?
01:27
You hear from him lately?
01:30
I ain't hear from Chester.
01:32
It'll be a year come Mickey.
01:34
I was thinking of the song that you read about him.
01:38
I wanted to sing it to my wife last night.
01:41
You know, we got a boy just about Chester's age who's got a hankering to go to the city.
01:49
Have you got your dulcimer here?
01:51
Yes, I have, officer.
01:53
I wonder if you'd mind singing me that song.
01:57
I'd be tickled to death, sir.
02:00
You'll have to excuse me, though, if my voice isn't just right.
02:07
You know, we can't get any uppercack up on this part of the country.
02:10
Right ahead, Mr. Snavely.
02:12
You won't consider me rude if I play with my mitts on, will you?
02:19
Not at all, Mr. Snavely. Not at all.
02:22
[music]
02:26
There was once a poor boy, and he left his country home.
02:33
And he came to the city to look for work.
02:38
He promised his ma and pa he would lead a sinless life,
02:44
and always shunned the fatal curse of drink.
02:51
Once in the city, he got a situation in a quarry,
02:56
and there he made the acquaintance of some college students.
03:02
He little thought they were demons, for they wore the best of clothes.
03:12
But the clothes do not always make the gentlemen.
03:20
Oh, they tempted him to drink, and they said he was a coward,
03:27
until at last he took the fatal glass of beer.
03:32
When he found what he'd done, he diced the glass upon the floor,
03:41
and he staggered through the door with delirium to remorse.
03:48
[music]
03:52
Once upon the sidewalk, he met a Salvation Army girl,
03:58
and wickedly he broke her tambourine.
04:03
All she said was, "Heaven, heaven bless you,"
04:09
and fleeced a mark upon his brow.
04:13
With a kick she'd learn before she had been saved.
04:19
Now as a moral to young men who come down to the city,
04:27
don't go around breaking people's tambourines.
04:33
That certainly is a sad song.
04:36
[sobbing]
04:41
Don't cry, Constable. It is a sad song.
04:46
My Uncle Ichabod said, speaking of the city,
04:53
"It ain't no place for women, gal, but pretty men go there."
04:59
He always said something to make you split your sides a-laughing.
05:05
Comical old gentleman he was.
05:08
Well, I think I'll be a high jail on the rim.
05:13
And it ain't a fit night out for man or beast.

I'd like to go to my little bedroom and lay on the bed and cry like I was a baby again.
12:10
[crying]
12:13
There, there. Go to your room and have a good cry, dear.
12:18
I know how you feel.
12:21
I feel so tired, I think I'll go to bed.
12:25
Why don't you lie down and take a little rest first, Chester?
12:29
Well, good night, Pa.
12:31
Good night, Chester.
12:32
Good night, Ma.
12:33

12:43
Don't forget to open the window a bit, Chester.
12:45
Don't forget to open yours a bit, Pa.
12:47
I won't, Chester.
12:48
Yes, don't forget to open your window a bit, Chester.
12:50
Put yours up a bit too, Ma.

14:21
Hello, Lena.
14:23
Hello, Lena.
14:25
Hey, Albert.
14:26
Have you seen Lena?
14:29
Tell her Mr. Snavely wants to--
14:32
Hello, Lena.
14:33
It's certainly a bright, moonlight night tonight.
14:37
Hello, Lena.
14:41
Hello, Lena.
14:43
Hey, Lena.
14:44
It's me.
14:45
Come here.
14:46
Don't you know me?
14:47
Mr. Snavely.
14:48
Hello, honey.
15:13
Chester, did you steal them bombs?
15:17
Yes, Ma.
15:18
I stole them bombs.
15:20
I was a bank messenger, and they caught me fair and square.
15:24
I wasn't framed.
15:26
I know you stole them, but I never would admit it to your father.
15:32
If he thought you stole them, it would break his poor old heart.
15:38
Never tell him any different.
15:43
Good night, Chester.
15:44
Good night, Ma.

Chester?
16:54
Yes, Pa?
16:55
Can I speak to you a minute, son?
16:57
Yes, Pa.
17:04
Chester, did you steal them bombs?
17:13
I know you stole them, son, but I never would admit it to your mother.
17:19
She thinks you're innocent.
17:21
You must never tell her any different.
17:24
If she thought you stole them, it would break her poor old heart.
17:31
Oh, it's so good to be home, Dad.
17:34
I'm going to stay here now with you and Ma for all time.
17:39
Chester, have you any of them bombs on you or any of that money?
17:45
No, Dad.
17:46
I ain't got any of them bombs on me.
17:49
I took that painted money and threw it away.
17:54
And you came back to me and Mother.
