The United States Senate approved an aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at local time. The legislative package also contains text that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media app does not immediately sever ties with its Chinese parent company. Previously, the US House of Representatives, led by the Republican Party, passed this massive aid on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

The Democratic-controlled United States Senate passed the broader package with bipartisan support with a vote of 79-18. The passage of the bill, which also provides much-needed humanitarian aid for Gaza, Sudan, and Haiti, comes after months of heated debate among lawmakers over how or even whether to help Ukraine defend it self.

After being passed by the United States House of Representatives, the aid package bill will then be submitted to US President Joe Biden. Biden himself views the aid package aimed at Ukraine in particular as an important bulwark against Russian aggression.

He has also told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he will sign it into law.

"Finally, finally, finally, tonight, after more than six months of hard work and many twists and turns in the road, America sent a message to the rest of the world: we will not turn our backs on you," said Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer. ahead of the vote.

His fellow Republican, Mitch McConnell, hailed the vote as a momentous day in the history of the United States and the free world. The Ukraine move also allows Joe Biden to seize and sell Russian assets and give the money to Kyiv to finance reconstruction, a move that has been embraced by other G7 countries. The bill is the result of months of debate on Capitol Hill, pressure from US allies, and repeated requests for help from Zelensky.

The United States has been Ukraine's main military backer in the war against Russia, but Congress has not approved large-scale funding for its ally in nearly a year and a half.

International law requires that states have a certain territory, a permanent population, a government, and the ability to establish international relations. This condition is what allows a country to become an official member of the United Nations.
