Certified public accountant Riley Adams told HuffPost, this can happen if you've lived

in multiple states or move around a lot, or from overlooked things, like old bank accounts,

overpaid credit cards you closed, or a past family member's unclaimed estate.

So it's worth checking various free sources.

Visit the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators directory at unclaimed.org.

Search by state for money from bank accounts, life insurance policies, and social security

For money from old bank accounts, use the FDIC's unclaimed funds database.

For paychecks from a previous employer, check the Department of Labor's website for owed
