The U.S. government is holding onto billions of dollars worth of unclaimed assets. With 1 in 10 people missing money or property, some of it could be yours.

00:13Certified public accountant Riley Adams told HuffPost, this can happen if you've lived

00:17in multiple states or move around a lot, or from overlooked things, like old bank accounts,

00:22overpaid credit cards you closed, or a past family member's unclaimed estate.

00:27So it's worth checking various free sources.

00:29Visit the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators directory at unclaimed.org.

00:35Search by state for money from bank accounts, life insurance policies, and social security

00:41and pension payments.

00:42For money from old bank accounts, use the FDIC's unclaimed funds database.

00:46For paychecks from a previous employer, check the Department of Labor's website for owed

00:51wages.

00:52Or see if you were a part of a class action lawsuit you didn't know about through classaction.org.

00:57While the process might take a while, it's fairly easy to file a claim to get your money

01:01back.

01:02Just watch out for unclaimed money scams requiring a fee.
