00:00 Tucked away between Milton Common and Eastern Road is one of Portsmouth's most beautiful

00:15 war memorials and I've come today to see it for myself.

00:35 The People's Memorial sits at a scenic spot at Langstone Harbour in the North Portsea

00:47 The monument itself consists of a stone cairn and a flagpole flying a Union Jack and other

00:51 regimental emblems.

01:04 It began in 2009 when dedicated local man Willie Goldfinch laid the first stone.

01:18 It serves as a powerful tribute to the men and women serving in the British Armed Forces

01:39 Opposite the monument is a tranquil garden home to doves and with benches to sit and

01:44 reflect.

02:00 A message from Willie at the site of the garden reads "All are welcome to enjoy the peace

02:06 and tranquility of the People's Memorial and to reflect with hope in your hearts for a

02:12 better way and a new beginning that might one day erase forever the need for war."
