Chinese President Xi Jinping met with former Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing to advance efforts towards reunification between China and Taiwan, which separated after the civil war in 1949. Ma, who left office nearly two decades ago, has been marginalized within Taiwan's Nationalist Party due to public opposition to political unification with China and concerns about compromising Taiwan's security. He joins a succession of KMT politicians invited by China's one-party government for high-profile visits and special treatment in recent years.
