UPDATE! UNSC Officially Proposes Palestine to Become a Full Member of the Committee
  • 12 days ago
The president of the UN Security Council has submitted the Palestinian Authority's request for Palestine to become a full member of the UN to the committee. The 15-member committee is expected to make a decision on the status of Palestine this month.

Malta's ambassador to the UN, Vanessa Frizier, previously proposed that the committee meet on Monday to consider the request, while Malta is president of the UN Security Council for the month of April.

The Palestinian envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansur, said that the Palestinian Authority sincerely hopes that after 12 years it can become an observer state at the UN. The Palestinian Authority officially asked the UN Council to reconsider its 2011 application for full membership in the world body.

This hope makes membership in the Palestinian Authority move forward and becomes an important and symbolic moment for Palestine. As is known, any country can become a full member of the UN, provided it has to be approved by the security council and then needs to get support from 2/3 of the 190 members as well as the UN general assembly.

UN Security Council approval requires at least nine votes and no veto from the United States, Russia, China, France, and Britain. Earlier on Monday, the UN Council also met behind closed doors to discuss a letter from the Palestinian Authority. Responding to this, the Israeli ambassador to the UN said that recognition of a Palestinian state would be a threat to Israel's national security.
