Interview with Sheffield Steelers' head coach Aaron Fox following his team's win in the 2024 Elite League Challenge Cup Final against Guildford Flames

00:00 How does that feel? You've been here before?

00:09 Yeah absolutely but it's been a while and to do it in front of this home crowd, atmosphere

00:14 is electric, guys played their hearts out, I felt like we played really really good in

00:19 the first 40 and then we absorbed some pressure in the third minute, we knew they were going

00:22 to push, Greener held firm and it was a great 60 minute effort.

00:26 I was going to say it was a tough going wasn't it? It wasn't an easy game was it?

00:30 No absolutely not, we go up 3-1 then we have a breakaway, we miss a breakaway, probably

00:34 could have changed the dynamic of that game but they never quit, that team plays hard,

00:39 they play fast, they've got some real speed on the wings and they'll make you defend hard

00:45 which we did tonight so it was a huge 60 from our group.

00:48 It's the first of three trophies that you're looking for, now the talk can begin about

00:52 being in the picture for more, obviously the tension turns back to the league but I imagine

00:56 you're going to enjoy this one for a short while yet?

00:59 Yeah we'll have to, we won't be able to have such a long celebration here like maybe you

01:06 would like to with the midweek game, if it was a Sunday maybe you'd have a couple of

01:09 days but we'll let them celebrate tonight and rest tomorrow and come back on Friday

01:14 and have a good skate and be ready for a huge weekend because we're in a good spot right

01:19 now but nothing's finished and we've got to make sure we don't take our foot off the gas.

01:23 As a coach how satisfying is it to see your plans come to fruition?

01:26 Yeah of course, you start the year hoping for everything and we fell short the last

01:34 couple of years, we were in it in every competition until late and just weren't able to get it

01:39 done so unreal feeling to get the first one out of the way here and hopefully there's

01:44 more to come.

01:45 For you as a team is it the starting point of something, a special period for the club?

01:48 Absolutely I think so, I don't like to get too far ahead of myself that's for sure, I

01:54 don't take for granted the season we've had and the group of guys we've got and I can't

01:59 tell you what will happen in the future but I love our group, a bunch of character guys

02:04 in there, good people on and off the ice and couldn't be happier.

02:09 I'm going to say you've said that quite throughout the season that it's a bunch of character

02:12 guys, how pleased are you for them?

02:13 Huge, there's some guys in there that might have won trophies in their career and for

02:19 them the commitment and work effort and some of the stuff we've went through as a group

02:25 this year as well hasn't been easy but they've persevered and like I said just an unreal

02:32 group of guys.
