Four-Person Flying Electric Taxi with 50 Miles Range, New CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL
  • last month
The first flight of the CityAirbus NextGen is expected to take place at Airbus' new German test center later this year.

European aerospace company Airbus has introduced the CityAirbus NextGen as it looks to keep up with Hyundai and other startups entering the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) game. Using the "lift and cruise" concept, the aviation giant believes the prototype will be perfect for air travel in cities and suburbs.

With a wingspan of 39 feet (12 meters), the CitiAirbus NextGen is by no means small, but its fixed wings and V-shaped tail were designed with silent flight in mind, Airbus says. The figure will also enable the electric vehicle to reach a cruising speed of 75 mph (120 km/h).

Eight electrically powered propellers help the prototype lift off the ground vertically and move horizontally through the air, and Airbus is targeting a range of 50 miles (80 km). This is said to make it ideal for use in major cities. The company also states that it collaborates with its airline partners to ensure practicality and convenience.

The operational configuration includes a pilot accompanied by three passengers seated in a horizontal formation behind the cabin.

In addition to CityAirbus NextGen, the company also took the opportunity to introduce Germany's Donauwoerth test center to the world. The location will be devoted to test systems for eVTOLs.

This system, which has been in operation since December, will be used to prepare CityAirbus NextGen for its first flight, which is planned for later this year. The company plans to test the eVTOL's electric motors, rotors, flight controls, avionics and other systems.

Airbus says it is committed to meeting the highest safety standards and is working with regulators to ensure every part of CityAirbus NextGen is ready for passengers. Although it will be equipped with an automatic flight mode, initial flights will be operated by a pilot to ensure the technology is developed responsibly.
