00:00 A recent report from plagiarism detector, CopyLeaks, has revealed that 60% of OpenAI's

00:06 GPT-3.5 outputs contain some form of plagiarism.

00:11 If you're harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to create content, products,

00:16 and deliver information-based services, you may be shocked to find out that a) you could

00:21 be plagiarizing others' work, and b) AI-generated material isn't protected by copyright laws.

00:28 Which means anyone with the right tech know-how can quickly detect, then copy any work generated

00:34 by AI, to then sell at a fraction of the price and pass it off as their own.

00:40 And you have no legal recourse to stop it.

00:44 Information-based products or services are the currency of our era, but without copyright,

00:49 they're worthless.

00:50 There are three important things that you must understand that we're going to dive

01:14 But first, I want you to think of copyright as an invisible shield that defends the originality

01:20 of content crafted by marketers, designers, consultants, authors, and of course you.

01:27 It guards your hard-earned profits, incentivizing originality and ensuring innovation doesn't

01:33 go unrewarded.

01:34 This is important to know, especially if you're an employee for a company or you're a service-based

01:40 business and you're producing content on behalf of your clients that requires copyright protection,

01:47 for them to financially benefit and for them to have legal protection from rip-offs.

01:52 Daniel Gervais, a professor at Vanderbilt Law School, makes this point clear.

01:57 He told Website Built-in, "If a machine and a human work together, but you can separate

02:03 what each of them has done, then copyright will only focus on the human part."

02:10 The US Copyright Office offered guidance on AI-generated content in March of last year,

02:16 in which it said, "Copyright can protect only material that is the product of human

02:21 creativity."

02:22 Why is this both important and urgent to understand?

02:26 Firstly, using purely AI-generated content devalues your product or services as anyone

02:32 has the right to replicate it.

02:34 Secondly, companies will start implementing policies that require employees and consultants'

02:40 work to be run through AI checkers, to ensure their publishing with integrity, and to test

02:46 the legitimacy and the ability to protect the content produced.

02:50 Thirdly, they'll be required to use these tools to ensure they don't infringe on others'

02:56 copyrights themselves.

02:57 And this last piece is critical.

02:59 Business Insider just reported that Amazon employers have been warned for the second

03:04 time against using third-party generative AI tools for this reason.

03:09 But their warning went even further, telling employees not to share confidential information

03:15 with third-party tools.

03:17 They're concerned that any output, such as emails, code, confidential information, and

03:22 strategy may be extracted, reviewed, used, and distributed by the owners of generative

03:28 AI.

03:29 The concern stems from AI companies potentially claiming the rights to the model's results

03:34 themselves, which to be honest, is rich, considering it's now clear that OpenAI and other AI

03:41 models have been trained on copyrighted material without incentivising those who hold the copyright.
