Don't think that the 2024 M2's small stature means a decrease in performance. Under its domed hood is the same twin-turbocharged inline-six engine you'll find in the more expensive M3. Despite its performance potential, the M2 is surprisingly easy to use in everyday life. Such versatility means you can use it as a weekend track and field toy, as well as use it to run errands or commute to the office during the week. Transporting rear seat passengers is perhaps its only drawback, as the back seat is comfortable for adults. But BMW has integrated plenty of infotainment technology into the cabin, and interior materials are top-notch for the segment.

The M2 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces a whopping 453 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. This is the same engine that's standard in the M3 and M4s, but there's 20 horsepower less here; but the torque output is the same. All M2s are rear-wheel drive, and buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The interior of the M2 has the same layout as the regular 2 series coupe. Passenger space is generous for front-seat drivers, but backseat occupants may wish they had opted for a 3-series sedan. The design is suggestive and the front seats feature dramatic bolstering and illuminated M logos. Opt for the Carbon Fiber package and a layer of material is coated on many surfaces of the M2's cabin, and those sport seats are replaced with more aggressive, body-hugging buckets that are said to save 24 pounds of weight.

A digital monolith of a display informs the driver of any data he may need. The 12.3-inch display behind the steering wheel serves as a reconfigurable instrument display and transitions seamlessly to the larger 14.9-inch touchscreen that provides access to the M2's iDrive 8 infotainment system. Navigation is standard, and a head-up display and 5G connectivity are optional.
