Pre-Raphaelite works inspired by the Old Masters on show in Italy

The exhibition is the first to display works by the likes of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, alongside those of Michelangelo, Botticelli and Bellini.

00:00 For the first time over 300 works by the 19th century British movement, the Pre-Raphaelite

00:05 Brotherhood have gone on display in Italy, alongside works by the Italian masters who

00:10 inspired them, including Michelangelo and Botticelli. The artistic movement was born

00:15 in 1848, in the year of the revolutions that set fire to the whole of Europe, and its style

00:21 reflected the socio-political changes taking place.

00:25 The Pre-Raphaelite Brothers were seven young men, all about age 20, living in London in

00:30 the late 1840s. They were tired of mediocre, storytelling art that was exhibited at the

00:36 Royal Academy, where some of them were studying in school, and they said, "That's enough.

00:40 We want something much more exciting. We want art that is much more authentic and passionate,

00:46 that is more tightly drawn and more brightly coloured. We want to make people more excited

00:53 about art in terms of its emotional power."

00:57 Pre-Raphaelite's modern renaissance features loans from numerous Italian and foreign museums,

01:02 including the Uffizi in Florence, the British Museum and the Tate Modern, and others including

01:07 museums in the USA, Mexico and Brazil. It runs at the Museo Civico until the 30th of
