00:08 opening up about her new role as a mom.

00:11 And she's spilling the details on a health secret

00:13 that even surprised me.

00:29 - Hi.

00:30 - You look absolutely marvelous.

00:32 - Thank you. How are you?

00:34 - Thank you for being here. - Thank you. Hi!

00:36 - Oh, my goodness.

00:38 It has been--they were so excited to see you today.

00:41 - Oh, thank you. - Jumping up and down.

00:43 - I'm so excited to be here.

00:45 - Well, it's been five years. - Since I've been here.

00:47 - Yes, you went off and got married, had a baby.

00:50 - A lot has happened. - A lot's happened.

00:52 - I got their eyes.

00:53 - How are you adjusting to motherhood?

00:56 - Amazing. He's amazing.

00:58 He's the best baby in the world, so I'm really lucky.

01:01 - Santiago. - Santiago, yeah.

01:03 - So cute. - Thank you. Yeah, it's great.

01:05 Motherhood's gonna be great.

01:07 - So how do you go from having a baby to within three months--

01:10 three months postpartum, she's on a runway.

01:12 How's that possible? - Well, I'm not a model.

01:15 - Well, you look pretty good there.

01:17 - Thank you, thank you.

01:18 No, it takes a village, by the way,

01:20 that I had five Spanx on.

01:22 I had, like, ten girls,

01:24 like, with four people getting me into it.

01:26 Like, I was like, "Zip it up!"

01:29 So, yeah, I'm, like, a normal human being like everybody else.

01:32 I hate diet, I hate exercise, I hate having to do it,

01:36 but at the end of the hard days, it's worth it.

01:39 - There's a picture of Santiago you asked us to show.

01:41 This is a photo of you breastfeeding.

01:43 - Yes, at work. I was directing.

01:47 - Explain how that is. You're a busy mom.

01:49 - Yeah. - Trying to, obviously,

01:50 get your career thriving. - Yeah.

01:52 - Why post a picture of you breastfeeding at work?

01:55 - I'm not a pioneer.

01:57 Women work all the time and have babies and, you know,

02:00 balance it all, and so I had went back to work.

02:03 He was two months old, and I had to go back.

02:05 I was directing, and I said, "It'll be easy

02:07 "'cause I was just directing.

02:08 "At least I don't have to be in front of the camera

02:10 "and looking amazing yet."

02:12 And it was harder. I was like, "Why am I doing this?"

02:16 So I was still breastfeeding, not sleeping,

02:17 up every three hours during the night.

02:19 He was sleeping great, but I wasn't.

02:21 But, yeah, you know, I just--

02:23 I mean, I post all the time about him 'cause I'm so happy

02:26 that he's here on this Earth,

02:28 but at the same time to go, "Oh, okay, you know,

02:30 "you can--women multitask all the time."

02:33 - Are you happy enough to have more children?

02:35 - That's too soon to ask me that question.

02:37 - Pretty good at it.

02:38 Let me ask you about women in general,

02:39 since it is the big challenge I think we face today in America.

02:42 Women are doing 15 things at once,

02:43 including rearing kids. - Yeah.

02:45 - You've been very outspoken in your desire

02:47 to have more women go into what you call STEM,

02:49 which is the word we use for science, technology,

02:52 engineering, math.

02:53 Women to be in science. - Mm-hmm.

02:55 - Why do you believe having a science education

02:57 is so critical, not just for those women,

02:59 but for their families?

03:00 - Well, you know, that's where the future work

03:03 is going to be, is in these STEM fields.

03:05 And so my foundation focuses on preparing

03:09 specifically Latinas to go into these fields

03:12 because there's gonna be-- just this year alone,

03:14 there's gonna be a million computing jobs available.

03:16 So for every person who comes out of college

03:18 with a STEM degree, there's gonna be four jobs

03:21 waiting for them, where if you come out

03:23 with a different degree, there's four people

03:25 waiting for that one job. - Yeah.

03:27 - And so it's like, that's the future workforce

03:29 of our country, so let's educate them early.

03:33 And also we want women to have economic mobility,

03:36 economic independence, and those are the jobs

03:38 that are gonna do it. - So why is that--

03:40 why is that message not heard by women already?

03:42 - Says the actor, by the way. - Says the actor.

03:44 That's right. Although--

03:45 [applause]

03:46 Oh, that might be where it needs to go,

03:47 'cause I think women do believe they can become actors

03:49 or, you know, do jobs that are highly competitive.

03:53 - Yeah, yeah. - And they give up

03:55 the opportunity to do all the other great stuff.

03:56 Why is that message not out there?

03:58 - Yeah, well, I think also, you know,

04:00 with social media, everybody thinks,

04:02 "Oh, I can just be famous."

04:03 So I think it's finding something that you love,

04:07 'cause it's not just about making money.

04:09 It's about, "What am I gonna be good at?

04:10 "What am I gonna be happy to get out--

04:12 get up every day and do?"

04:14 - In the arts, there also has been

04:17 an interesting bias against women in some positions.

04:19 Like, director of photography,

04:20 which is a person who makes the picture look beautiful.

04:22 You fought hard to have a woman serve that role

04:26 on a recent project, if you will.

04:27 - Yes, yes, I produced a show called "Grand Hotel"

04:29 that's coming out soon,

04:31 and I wanted a female cinematographer.

04:35 I wanted a female DP on this show,

04:37 and they were like, "Bob's great, and John's great."

04:40 And I'm like, "I'm sure they're great,

04:41 but I'm sure there's a great woman, too."

04:42 And sure enough, we found her, Alison Kelly.

04:44 She's amazing. [applause]

04:46 And I think it's not gonna change.

04:48 It's not gonna change unless we change it,

04:50 unless we demand it.

04:51 And so we have to have women at the table.
