00:00 Despite the price increase in some major stores, the price of red onions has already dropped.
00:08 Rod Laguza and in the center of the news, live.
00:11 Angelique, some major stores have increased in February,
00:17 including the tomatoes and rice, but the price of red onions has already dropped.
00:27 According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, from the second half of January this year,
00:32 21 out of 34 agricultural commodities have increased their prices.
00:38 The highest price was the price of tomatoes.
00:44 In the second phase of January, the price was at P78 per kilogram,
00:49 compared to P102 per kilo, which is higher than P24.
00:54 The Department of Agriculture explained that there was a shortage of tomatoes.
00:59 There are places in Southern Tagalog that were affected,
01:04 even though there is El Niño, there are places affected by the rain.
01:07 And then here in Nueva Ecija, in parts of Central Luzon,
01:11 there was a reduction of the area planted with tomatoes.
01:14 The DA added that only Quezon Province was affected by the rain in Southern Tagalog,
01:20 but Laguna and Batangas were slowly affected.
01:24 According to Assistant Secretary De Mesa,
01:26 the recovery of tomatoes will only be fast within 1 to 2 months.
01:30 And because of the continuous effect of El Niño,
01:32 it will not be affected that much, especially since the tomatoes are not strong in water,
01:37 which is why dry areas are favored.
01:39 When it comes to other products that have increased and are minimal,
01:44 or not that strong or high,
01:46 the rice was increased to P0.79 in the well-milled.
01:52 When it comes to the special, it was increased to P0.68.
01:55 And the regular milled was increased to P0.46.
01:59 And because of the decrease in the price of rice in the international market,
02:03 the Department of Agriculture is hoping that it will continue to decrease.
02:06 It will have an impact on our imported rice.
02:12 And the timing of our harvest,
02:17 we will start harvesting on March-April.
02:21 Based on the price of farm gate approved by the NFA Council,
02:25 which is P19 to P23 for dry rice,
02:29 we can see that it will possibly go down and return to the P40 level.
02:34 This is particular to the regular milled and well-milled rice
02:38 that is possible to happen in the next weeks or months.
02:41 Meanwhile, the price of red onions has decreased significantly.
02:45 From P188 per kilo in the second half of January,
02:49 compared to P174 per kilo in the first half of February,
02:53 it has decreased by more than P13.
02:56 According to the Department of Agriculture,
02:58 the area of production for onions has increased by 40%,
03:02 just like in the provinces of Nueva Ecija and Central Luzon.
03:05 And now, March and April will be the peak of the harvest of onions.
03:09 Because of this, the group of rice that has decreased the price of onions is worried.
03:15 The BPI, our high value, and our AMAS are prioritizing
03:21 that there will be market linkages.
03:23 It will tie up with our Kadiwa,
03:26 and hopefully, with our other provinces in Southern Tagalog,
03:33 and other areas that also need onions.
03:38 According to the Department of Agriculture,
03:41 they saw from the data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority,
03:45 that there is stability in the price of agricultural commodities.
03:50 This is because they saw that the price of rice was not increased,
03:55 particularly in the main areas.
03:58 Rod, does the DA have an assurance that this good supply of onions will continue
04:06 because you said that the supply of onions increased by 40%?
04:11 Angelique, the Department of Agriculture mentioned earlier
04:17 that because the coming months, March and April, are harvest season,
04:22 they are hoping that more onions will be added to the market
04:27 that will lower the price of onions.
04:29 At the same time, the Department of Agriculture is not neglecting
04:33 the need for a market linkages because the price of onions will decrease
04:36 and the farmers may not earn any money.
04:39 So, what we are doing here is creating market linkages,
04:42 just like in Kadiwa, so that the onions will have a market.
04:46 Alright, thank you very much, Rod Lagusan.
04:49 side.
