Highways officials have unveiled a robot dog working on motorways and roadsides - and claim it will help end traffic jams.  The canine - called Spot - is being tested on the M5 in Somerset where is is assessing embankments, roads and bridges.

00:00 Today we're here to introduce Spot the Dog along with our partners BAM to undertake geotechnical

00:07 inspections using innovative technology for the first time in the National Highways Network.

00:14 We are here to record and monitor geotechnical defects on embankments. This is a live trial

00:20 using techniques such as Spot, it's the first of its kind in the nation to be used in this

00:25 way. Going forward with the success of the trials we would like to look at using this

00:31 kind of technology across our network to help us and enhance our monitoring and surveying

00:37 inspections that we undertake annually across the network. At National Highways we're incredibly

00:43 keen to explore new ways of undertaking surveys away from our traditional methods. We're wanting

00:51 to move to more digital and innovative technology to enhance those survey techniques. From a

00:59 geotechnical point of view personally I'm really excited to start looking at these technologies

01:03 to help us assist us in our day to day job. It's something very different, something we've

01:07 never really done before and the innovative is just exciting.
