Analyzing whether the San Francisco 49ers will trade Brandon Aiyuk this offseason.
Transcript
00:00 Will Brennan and Iuke be back on the 49ers?
00:02 He better be back on the 49ers.
00:09 He better be back on the 49ers if they want any shot next year.
00:14 I do.
00:15 I think he'll be back.
00:16 I know that there's a lot that came out in the last 24 hours or so from his girl
00:21 and his best friend and him.
00:24 I just think he's hurt.
00:26 I do.
00:27 I think he's hurt and he feels like if the ball was in his hands, he could have
00:31 made plays to win the Super Bowl.
00:33 And I agree with him.
00:35 I think that that is also a possibility.
00:37 He knows he's about to get paid and regardless, let's, let's say the
00:45 49ers don't give him what he wants.
00:46 He's on his fifth year option.
00:49 The 49ers aren't going to just let him go.
00:52 So no, I think that, uh, I think that Brennan and Iuke will be back this next year.
00:57 I think so too.
01:00 And it's going to be interesting to see what kind of, how he leverages this
01:04 because, um, Debo tried to leverage, right?
01:08 He requested a trade, but he pretty much backed down and ended up taking a deal
01:13 that might've been worse than what he could have gotten had he not said anything.
01:16 He didn't have that much leverage cause he only had one great year.
01:20 Bosa pretty much wrote his own check and waited until the very end to cash.
01:25 Like he didn't even come to practice, uh, training camp.
01:27 I don't think I can do that.
01:28 I don't think he can do that.
01:32 I don't think he will do that.
01:33 I don't know how much leverage he really has.
01:35 He's not going to sit out the season.
01:36 Um, I just wonder, like, is this going to go down like the Buckner situation
01:43 where they make them an offer and I was like, look, this is disrespectful.
01:46 Um, let's just break up.
01:48 And the Niners say, cool.
01:50 Yeah, let's, let's trade you now and get a pick and get a rookie.
01:54 Is that, it could go that direction.
01:57 I mean, Debo almost went that direction, but they didn't, they didn't get what
02:00 they, the offer they wanted on, on draft night, I might be different.
02:04 I don't know.
02:05 What do you think?
02:06 Is it, could he get traded on draft night?
02:07 Like, you know, or before it like Buckner?
02:09 Well, I will say this.
02:12 I don't think he's going anywhere, but we just talked about guys that we would move
02:16 on from and how nearly impossible it is to move on from them.
02:20 Iuke is the most easily tradable asset that they have.
02:24 Every single dollar that he has paid this year is fully guaranteed, which means none
02:31 of that goes on the 49ers books.
02:33 If they trade him, they take zero cap hit by trading him.
02:36 So if you're going to move on from someone, he is the easiest to do that
02:41 because you're not going to have any backlash on your salary cap.
02:45 And he's coming off of a very good season, which means his values at an all-time high.
02:51 And he's younger than somebody like say Debo Samuel.
02:54 So I think he's the most movable asset.
02:58 I still don't think he goes anywhere, but yeah, he certainly could be moved.
03:02 I think it would be a big mistake for them to move him.
03:05 Um, I don't think it was a mistake for them to trade Buckner, but it's one
03:09 thing to trade a defensive tackle.
03:11 You know, he'll have what?
03:13 Six, seven, eight sacks a year.
03:15 Some good plays against the run.
03:16 Different trading a wide receiver who just went for 1300 yards.
03:21 Like that's a guy who makes multiple plays a game who fans love.
03:25 I think that'd be a mo they have an emotional, more of an emotional
03:29 time with him than with, than with Buckner.
03:31 And I just don't think you can trade him.
03:33 He's too good.
03:34 I mean, all the things I would say about Buckner, he's ascending, he's young.
03:37 He outperformed his draft slot.
03:39 He's better than you thought he would be.
03:40 He blocks, he fits in your culture.
03:43 He doesn't complain.
03:44 Like he does everything right.
03:46 And you're going to trade.
03:47 Years.
03:47 I said he should have been a captain.
03:48 I I'll bet you this.
03:50 I'll bet you that once he gets his extension, he'll be a team captain.
03:55 Yeah, guaranteed.
03:57 I think he's coming back.
03:58 And so I'm trying to keep that in mind this off season when he potentially
04:02 requests a trade and things get weird.
04:04 This happened with Debo and Debo came back and everyone forgot.
04:10 He's still best friends with Kyle and he still gets all kinds of targets and
04:13 there's no fallout from that whole off season.
04:15 That was quite awkward.
04:16 Very awkward.
04:17 I don't think I will get that awkward.
04:20 I don't think the Niners are going to let him go.
04:22 It's not in their interest.
04:23 They could trade him for a rookie, but don't the reason they made that trade
04:27 off with Sanders is that Emmanuel Sanders was done.
04:29 He was done.
04:31 They had no choice.
04:32 It takes wide receivers a while to learn this offense.
04:37 Debo talked about it.
04:38 I talked about it.
04:39 You can't just guarantee that a rookie is going to step into this team and just
04:42 learn it all and be ready to go and then you can trust them.
04:44 Can't you?
04:45 There's no guarantee.
04:46 Shanahan doesn't trust many rookies, but also can we talk about the strategy?
04:52 The 49ers have when it comes to extending these players and how
04:55 they wait as long as they do.
04:56 We now have pretty good evidence from the last two big extensions that they've
05:02 done and Debo Samuel and Nick Bosa, that waiting is not the way to go because
05:09 you're trying to get the best out of that player.
05:11 Debo Samuel, who didn't want to train because he, or at least train the way
05:17 he normally would because he didn't want to get hurt before he got paid and
05:21 makes a ton of sense by the way, came in out of shape and he said he was out
05:25 of shape and was disappointed with his play at the end of last season.
05:29 Nick Bosa was very candid when asked about did his contract situation play
05:35 into maybe a down year and he said it did.
05:38 It absolutely did.
05:39 So you now have two players of recent memory getting paid and telling you
05:44 that because they were paid late, essentially they were not the player
05:48 that they are expected to be.
05:50 Please don't make the same mistake with Brandon Iyuk.
05:53 You know you're going to pay him anyways.
05:56 Get it done.
05:57 Get it done early so that he can get himself in football
06:01 shape and be ready to go.
06:02 Brandon Iyuk is the type of player that probably is not going to let himself go.
06:07 But we, Nick Bosa is the same thing.
06:09 Grant, this guy is a workout freak.
06:11 Oh, one thing we know about Bosa, he can come in the day before the first
06:15 game and he'll be Nick because he is this and he is that and he's always
06:19 in shape and you don't have to worry about him.
06:21 Doesn't matter.
06:22 He still said it impacted his season because it happened so late.
06:26 So don't, don't do that again.
06:28 The one thing with Iyuk is like projecting forward.
06:32 He's a, he's an X receiver.
06:33 He's your deep threat.
06:34 Will he, you know, lose a step in the next few years?
06:37 Would you move him over to flanker?
06:39 Would he be more of a possession receiver?
06:40 Anyway, doesn't matter.
06:42 He'd be great.
06:42 Either one.
06:43 He could play any position.
06:44 He's got to come back.
06:46 Niners would be really, really foolish to let him go.
