In a significant blow to the Opposition INDIA bloc, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah announced on Thursday that his party would independently contest all seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. While indicating a potential future re-entry into the BJP-led NDA, Abdullah dismissed the possibility of forming alliances with other opposition parties. The National Conference's decision to go solo in the polls follows similar moves by Mamata Banerjee's TMC and Arvind Kejriwal's AAP, underscoring a growing internal divide within the coalition of 28 parties led by the INDIA bloc. Abdullah emphasised the party's firm stance on contesting elections based on its own merits, leaving no room for ambiguity.

00:00 In a significant blow to the opposition India bloc, National Conference President Farooq
00:08 Abdullah announced on Thursday that his party would independently contest all seats in the
00:12 upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
00:14 While indicating a potential future re-entry into the BJP-led NDA, Abdullah dismissed the
00:19 possibility of forming alliances with other opposition parties.
00:23 The National Conference decision to go solo in the polls follows similar moves by Mamata
00:28 Banerjee's TMC and Arvind Kejriwal's AAP, underscoring a growing internal divide within
00:34 the coalition of 28 parties led by the India bloc.
00:38 Abdullah emphasised the party's firm stance on contesting elections based on its own merits,
00:44 leaving no room for ambiguity.
00:45 "This is a question of seat sharing.
00:46 I want to make one thing clear.
00:47 The National Conference will fight on its own.
00:48 There is no difference in that."
00:49 The three-time former Chief Minister of J&K, known for his staunch support of the India
01:02 bloc, actively participated in all meetings of the opposition alliance.
01:05 However, Mr. Abdullah did not provide detailed reasons for his party's sudden decision to
01:10 contest the upcoming elections independently.
01:13 Last month, he expressed apprehensions regarding the lack of consensus on seat-sharing arrangements
01:18 within the India bloc.
01:20 During an interview on former Union Minister Kapil Sehbal's YouTube channel, Mr. Abdullah
01:25 emphasised the importance of setting aside differences for the greater good of the country,
01:30 stating, "If we have to save the country, we will have to forget differences and think
01:34 about the country."
01:35 Recently, Mr. Abdullah found himself embroiled in controversy after being summoned by the
01:40 Enforcement Directorate in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the J&K
01:46 Cricket Association.
01:47 The case involves the alleged siphoning off of funds through transfers to personal bank
01:52 accounts of unrelated parties and unexplained cash withdrawals from the association's accounts.
01:57 Mr. Abdullah skipped the summons and in an email and a letter to the ED officials, cited
02:02 being out of town as the reason for his non-appearance.
02:04 However, Congress Communications in-charge Jayaram Ramesh said that talks for seat-sharing
02:09 were on and the NC and PDP would continue to be a part of the India bloc.
02:14 "Talks are on.
02:17 Different parties have different obligations.
02:20 But I am confident that the NC, PDP have all been a part of the India bloc and will continue
02:28 to be a part of it."
02:30 The strength of opposition presence in Parliament hinges on the outcome of the upcoming Lok Sabha
02:34 elections.
02:35 However, the coalition, known as India, formed by a patchwork of regional and national parties
02:40 to challenge the ruling BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appears
02:44 to be faltering.
02:46 Recent events, such as Bihar Chief Minister Nitesh Kumar's departure from the state's
02:50 Grand Alliance, followed by a swift coalition with the BJP, have showcased the fragility
02:55 of alliances within the opposition.
02:57 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision for a party, Trinamool Congress,
03:01 to contest elections independently, further undermines the unity of the India alliance.
03:06 Both politically and electorally influential, these moves by key players have dealt severe
03:12 blows to the coalition.
03:13 In addition, AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's announcement of contesting
03:18 all 90 assembly seats in Haryana independently while still participating in Lok Sabha polls
03:23 as part of the India bloc adds to the uncertainty surrounding the coalition's future.
03:28 With the elections looming, these developments have created significant unrest within the
03:33 India alliance, ultimately benefiting the ruling BJP.
03:37 Having secured victories in both the 2014 and 2019 general elections, the BJP stands
03:42 poised for a potential hat-trick in 2024 if it can navigate through the current political
03:47 landscape effectively.
