La rédaction de geneveMonde.ch a souhaité revenir sur un événement marquant de l'histoire de la santé publique en rencontrant le Dr Daniel Tarantola, ancien directeur du Département de l'immunisation, des vaccins et des produits biologiques de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) à Genève.
Il s'agit de l'éradication de la variole à l'issue d'une campagne mondiale à laquelle Daniel Tarantola a participé activement sur le terrain, non seulement en Afrique mais aussi en Asie, et plus particulièrement au Bangladesh. La variole était un candidat de choix pour l'éradication, car sa menace et sa gravité étaient redoutées dans le monde entier.
Dans le troisième de nos cinq entretiens avec Daniel Tarantola, nous revenons sur les difficultés de communiquer avec les populations locales et les solutions apportées par les équipes de l'OMS pour y remédier. Il est aussi question de l'intervention du Dr Tarantola sur un malade nommé Robibar, un bandit de grand chemin déjà très atteint par la variole quand il est pris en charge.

The geneveMonde.ch editorial staff would like to take a look back at a milestone in the history of public health, by interviewing Dr. Daniel Tarantola, former Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.
It's about the eradication of smallpox following a global campaign in which Daniel Tarantola played an active part in the field, not only in Africa but also in Asia, and more particularly in Bangladesh. Smallpox was a prime candidate for eradication, as its threat and severity were feared the world over.
In the third of our five interviews with Daniel Tarantola, we look back at the difficulties of communicating with local populations and the solutions provided by WHO teams to overcome them. We also discuss Dr. Tarantola's intervention on a patient named Robibar, a highwayman who was already very ill with smallpox when he was taken into care.
