00:00 President Ravier Millet was welcomed for the first time on Monday in the Vatican by Pope Francis,
00:05 native of Buenos Aires,
00:07 an audience destined to flatten their relationship while Argentina is in an explosive economic situation.
00:13 The 53-year-old ultraliberal economist,
00:16 who intends to rebuild Argentina, a world power at the cost of deregulation and privatization,
00:21 made his first official visit to Rome, two months after taking office.
00:26 Accompanied by his sister and the President's Secretary General,
00:30 as well as two ministers,
00:32 he arrived on Monday at 9 a.m., 8 a.m. GMT, at the Vatican Palace,
00:36 where he was received with honors reserved for heads of state,
00:39 said the AFP.
00:41 During their interview,
00:43 the two men ideologically at odds should discuss a possible trip of the Pope to Argentina,
00:48 where Rory Bergoglio has not returned since his election to the head of the Catholic Church in 2013.
00:54 After accusing the Pope of political interference last year,
00:57 Mr. Millet softened the tone, encouraging him to go to Argentina.
01:02 Accustomed to provocative and impulsive outings,
01:05 Ravier Millet had, during his electoral campaign,
01:08 treated the Pope as a "bad guy",
01:10 an "idiot" who promotes communism or "representative of the clever" on earth,
01:15 before radically changing his tone,
01:17 presenting him with his "excuses" and ensuring respect.
01:21 In November, however, François had called the newly elected president to congratulate him,
01:26 making fun of the latter in his own way,
01:29 and had sent him a rosary.
01:31 On Sunday, the two men appeared all smiling at a mass held in the Basilica of St. Peter
01:36 for the canonization of the First Saint of Argentina,
01:39 the religious and missionary of the 18th century Maria Antonia of San José,
01:43 known as Mama Antula.
01:46 Mr. Millet gave a "french accolade" to his 87-year-old compatriot who was moving in a wheelchair.
01:52 As tradition dictates, he will give the Pope several gifts,
01:56 including traditional Argentine biscuits with lemon and milk jam,
02:00 very much appreciated by the pontiff sovereign,
02:02 to indicate the government's spokesman.
02:04 He will also meet with the deans responsible for the Holy See
02:08 and will meet later in the day the Italian President Sergio Mattarella
02:12 and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
02:14 Inflation at more than 200%
02:17 This meeting comes at a time when Argentina is in a tense political context,
02:22 marked this week by the reversal of the Parliament of deregulation
02:25 at the foot of the charge of the economy wanted by Mr. Millet.
02:28 Structurally indebted and strangled by an inflation of more than 200% in 2023,
02:34 the third economy of Latin America is threatened with a recession in 2024,
02:38 under the effect of the first austerity measures decreed by Mr. Millet,
02:42 the devaluation of the PESO of 50%, the end of price control,
02:46 and that, step by step, of subsidies to transport and energy.
02:51 Everything seems to separate the libertarian and his extreme right-wing postures
02:54 from the Jesuit who take the most disadvantaged people's aid
02:56 and denounce the drifts in financial markets.
02:59 On the ecology, a strong theme of the pontificate,
03:02 Mr. Millet assures that climate change is not a responsibility of man,
03:06 where the Pope denounces the impact of man on the common house.
03:10 The two men radically diverge on the way to fight poverty,
03:14 which affects 40% of the Argentine population.
03:18 Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis has not stopped pointing out
03:22 the inequalities generated by the market economy
03:24 and calling to protect the most vulnerable in society.
03:28 This diplomatic tour has previously led the Argentine president to Israel,
03:32 where he announced his "project" to move the Argentine embassy to Jerusalem.
