Transcript
00:00 Let's talk about hair loss. Now we typically lose 50 to 100 hairs per day
00:05 but we don't tend to notice as they're replaced by new hairs. Hair loss occurs
00:09 when new hair doesn't replace the hair that's fallen out. There are lots of
00:14 causes, here are some. A family history, the most common cause, that happens with
00:18 aging. It accounts for male and female pattern baldness and happens gradually
00:23 and in predictable patterns, here and here. Hormonal changes, temporary or
00:29 permanent hair loss can occur due to hormonal changes in things like
00:33 pregnancy, menopause and with thyroid disease. Alopecia areata, this is an
00:39 autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles and causes
00:44 hair loss, typically in circular patches and that can occur anywhere on the body.
00:48 Medication, drugs used to treat cancer, arthritis, depression and heart problems
00:53 may cause hair loss but remember never stop any medication before talking to a
00:58 clinician. Other things are fungal infections, harsh chemicals, nutritional
01:03 deficiencies such as those in iron and protein and stressful events such as
01:08 bereavements or physical and emotional trauma can all contribute to hair loss.
01:12 And finally some hairstyles that are too tight can also cause hair loss but if
01:18 you're worried about hair loss speak to a healthcare professional.
