Local shepherds in Ladakh engaged with Chinese soldiers when an attempt was made to prevent them from grazing sheep near the India-China border. Despite having refrained from grazing activities in the aftermath of the 2020 Galwan clash, the shepherds returned to the area, only to be confronted by the Chinese Army. Undeterred, the residents challenged members of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), asserting their presence on Indian territory.

00:00 Local shepherds in Ladakh engaged with Chinese soldiers when an attempt was made to prevent
00:06 them from grazing sheep near the India-China border.
00:10 Despite having refrained from grazing activities in the aftermath of the 2020 Galwan clash,
00:14 the shepherds returned to the area only to be confronted by the Chinese army.
00:19 Undeterred, the residents challenged members of the People's Liberation Army, asserting
00:23 their presence on Indian territory.
00:26 The incident occurred in the vicinity of patrolling points 35 and 36 at Kakjung, located under
00:31 the Neoma constituency in Ladakh.
00:34 According to Isse Spalzang, councillor of Neoma, the contested region corresponds with
00:39 India's perspective of the line of actual control.
00:42 The incident involving the shepherds and Chinese soldiers near the India-China border has gained
00:46 widespread attention after a video capturing the confrontation was extensively shared in
00:50 social media.
00:52 Many users praised the shepherds for their bravery in the face of adversity.
00:56 The Ladakh Member of Parliament, who shared a 6-minute-52nd video of the incident, highlighted
01:00 that the shepherds displayed remarkable resilience by refusing to wicked the area and even resorting
01:06 to pelting stones at the soldiers.
01:08 Social councillor Kunchok Stamzin expressed admiration for the nomads in the video, describing
01:14 them as the unsung heroes who consistently defend our land and serve as a secondary guardian
01:19 force for the nation.
01:20 See how a local people are showing their bravery in front of the PLA, claiming that the area
01:25 they are stopping is our nomads' grazing land.
01:27 "PLA stopping our nomads from grazing in our territory.
01:30 Seems it is never a never-ending process due to different lines of perceptions," Stamzin
01:36 said.
01:37 In another post, he stated that the shepherds standing up to the army is "heartening to
01:41 see."
01:42 "It is heartening to see the positive impact made by Fire Fury Corps Indian Army in border
01:47 areas of eastern Ladakh in facilitating the graziers and nomads to assert their rights
01:51 in traditional grazing grounds along the north bank of Pangong.
01:55 I would like to thank the Indian Army for such strong civil-military relations and looking
01:59 after the interests of the border area population," Stamzin tweeted.
02:04 In the aftermath of the confrontation, on January 12, a delegation comprising the SAD
02:07 Bunch Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police officials visited
02:12 the grazing site to assess the situation.
02:14 The incident is particularly concerning as it unfolds in an area encompassing at least
02:19 26 out of 65 patrolling points in eastern Ladakh that have remained unpatrolled by Indian
02:24 troops since April-May 2020.
02:26 The heightened tensions in the region date back to the violent clashes on June 15, 2020,
02:31 resulting in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers' lives in confrontations with the Chinese People's
02:35 Liberation Army.
02:37 Despite multiple rounds of diplomatic talks between the two countries aimed at resolving
02:40 the border issue, numerous areas in eastern Ladakh have evolved into buffer zones.
02:45 Both Indian troops and Chinese forces have refrained from patrolling these areas, contributing
02:50 to an atmosphere of uncertainty and ongoing security challenges in the region.
