2025 Mazda CX-70 First Look: What We Wanted?

Introducing the Mazda-CX70! Join MotorTrend editor Aaron Gold as he explains how this CX-90 look-alike will please Mazda fans or folks who are new to the brand.

00:00 I'm Aaron Gold for Motor Trend and this is the CX-70, the new two-row SUV from Mazda.

00:08 Now I know what you're saying, "Aaron, that's a CX-90."

00:14 But it's not.

00:15 The folks here at Mazda assure me this is the CX-70, even though it's basically the

00:19 same size as the CX-90 and the same shape as the CX-90 and probably has the same powertrains

00:23 as the CX-90.

00:24 It is a two-row version of that SUV and at an older, more mature audience.

00:30 You notice it's got this blacked-out chrome trim, a lot of black trim where there used

00:34 to be chrome on the CX-90, and of course, only two rows of seats.

00:38 It's a bit like the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport as opposed to the seven-seat Volkswagen

00:43 Atlas or the Honda Passport as opposed to the Honda Pilot.

00:46 Granted, those SUVs have a different shape and a little bit faster roofline, but the

00:51 CX-70 doesn't need that because it's the Mazda CX-70.

00:55 Inside, let's call it a variation on a theme.

01:01 It has the gorgeous digital dashboard, the beautiful materials that we love from the

01:06 CX-90 and the funky transmission shifter and the infotainment system that we don't.

01:11 Obviously, we haven't driven the CX-70 yet, but we know it's going to be fantastic to

01:15 drive, and that means the CX-70 gives us everything we love about the CX-90, the great driving

01:20 dynamics, the beautiful interior, and takes away the bits that we don't like so much.

01:24 The fact that the CX-90 is really not great as a seven-seater, and we think it's going

01:28 to find a lot of fans.

01:30 Obviously, such a large vehicle with only two rows of seats, there's plenty of cargo

01:35 space, and now that the third-row seat is gone, there is hidden storage under the floor,

01:39 and if you need more, you can fold the back seats electrically.

01:43 Now, Mazda hasn't given us any technical details yet.

01:46 They tell us there's going to be an inline six-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid system,

01:51 as well as a plug-in hybrid version.

01:53 We imagine the numbers are going to be pretty much the same as the CX-90, even though this

01:57 is not a CX-90, it's a CX-70.

02:01 Now, let's be serious for a moment.

02:03 Okay, that's enough.

02:05 We love the way the CX-90 looks, we love the way the CX-90 drives.

02:08 Our biggest complaint about the CX-90 is it's not that good as a seven-seater, so the CX-70

02:13 basically excises all the stuff that we don't like and leaves us with the stuff we do.

02:18 It's very luxurious, we're sure it's going to be great to drive, and we think it's going

02:22 to please a lot of people, be they Mazda fans or folks who are new to the brand.
