Winning snow sculpture unveiled at annual Colorado contest

A team from Mexico took home the gold with an incredibly detailed snow sculpture titled 'The Beggar.' The work of art will melt away in a short time, so this is your chance to see it.

00:00 This year's International Snow Sculpture Championships are taking over the ski town of Breckenridge, Colorado this week.

00:07 And meteorologist Tony Laubach joins us now from Breckenridge where competition has wrapped up and a winner has been named. Tony?

00:14 Yeah Jeff, and I will give you a hint. The winner is behind me and you're seeing the sculpture, the beggar.

00:23 Team Mexico taking home the gold in this year's championship.

00:27 You see the beautiful sculpture behind me, incredibly detailed.

00:30 What you can't see behind the banner here are all the little bitcoins.

00:34 You see the big one that he's holding there, all the little bitcoins, all the detail that went into this.

00:39 Impressed the judges enough to give this one the gold crown.

00:42 I'll tell you a little bit about this one here.

00:44 The beggar depicts a starving, emancipated man surrounded by bitcoins.

00:49 And they're describing their piece, Team Mexico's message is very, very clear here.

00:53 Without a rich heart, wealth is a hungry beggar.

00:57 The winning team includes captains Carlos Ramirez Paria.

01:00 He's the team captain. Israel Rodriguez, Adam Turner and David Seth Rothstein.

01:06 They were the four gentlemen who put this incredible sculpture together.

01:10 We are seeing that right now. Just beautiful, beautiful artwork with that.

01:14 We've got several others there. We have the silver medals going to Team Mongolia for their sculpture Mother Earth.

01:19 And the bronze medal going to Team Germany Bavaria for their sculpture Float.

01:24 We also had a tie between Mexican and Germany. Bavaria stood out among the artists themselves trying for the Artist's Choice Award.

01:32 Now, the People Award, that will be voted on tomorrow.

01:36 So folks that are coming in and watching the sculptures here tonight certainly can vote on that through tomorrow.

01:41 And these sculptures will be on display through Wednesday at 5 o'clock.

01:45 And Jeff, you're never going to believe what happens after that.

01:48 These incredible works of art, all 12 of them, will end up returning to the snow from which they came

01:55 as they are all carried out of here in piles, never to be seen again,

01:59 except for here on the AccuWeather Network, because we will have this on the site this weekend.
