MOT to promote Malaysia’s ports as a homeport, says Loke

Transport Minister Anthony Loke on Friday (Jan 19) said that his ministry and the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) would work together to promote Malaysia as a homeport for international cruises.  He said efforts to establish Malaysia as a homeport had been talked about for many years, but there was "no real effort” to make this a reality. 01:16 So when they come here to make Port Clarence as their home

01:20 port, together in collaboration with a local tour company,

01:24 Wajing Travel, of course, that make Malaysia not as only a port

01:30 of call, but as a home port.

01:32 The difference between a port of call and home port

01:36 is quite big, because when you're a port of call,

01:39 the cruise will come from elsewhere.

01:40 They just stop here for a few hours.

01:43 So the passengers will not embark or disembark

01:46 from our ports.

01:48 But when the cruise make our port as their home port,

01:52 then all passengers have to embark and disembark,

01:57 or check in or check out on the cruise from our port.

02:01 Why that is important from a tourism point of view

02:03 is that when you're a home port, you also

02:06 attract foreign tourists to come to Malaysia to take the cruise.

02:10 So they have to fly in.

02:11 And usually when they fly in, they

02:13 will probably stay a few days before and a few days after.

02:16 So they will take the opportunities

02:18 to come to the country and visit other places.

02:20 So that will, of course, a lot of spin-off

02:22 in terms of tourism.

02:24 They will spend more on hotels, spend more on restaurants,

02:27 spend more on retail, besides the cruise.

02:29 So that is the big advantage when

02:31 our ports become a home port.

02:33 So this is something that, of course,

02:36 is something that we have been talking about for many years.

02:39 But there was no real effort to make Malaysia as a home port

02:43 choice for the cruise liners.

02:45 So beginning now, and with this collaboration,

02:49 the Ministry of Transport will work together

02:51 with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, MOTEC,

02:54 to further promote Malaysia as a home port destination.

02:59 And what I meant is that what I've mentioned just now,

03:02 I will also attend the World Cruise Conference in Miami

03:06 in April to promote our ports as a home port.

03:10 Maybe it's because the cruise is halal, maybe?
