Taylor Kyles from CLNS Media teams up with Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub for a live reaction to the press conference by the New England Patriots, where Jerod Mayo was officially introduced as their 15th head coach. They also discuss USC QB Caleb Williams officially declaring for the NFL Draft and the news that former Cardinals’ Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury, now a senior offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach at USC, is anticipated to interview for the offensive coordinator position with the Chicago Bears.

00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - What's going on everyone?
00:15 Taylor Kyles here for CLNS Media,
00:17 bringing you the best damn day of past coverage.
00:20 Although it's moved back a day
00:22 because there was a big event yesterday.
00:24 I'm not sure if you heard about it,
00:25 but I am Taylor Kyles.
00:27 This is my man, Alex Barth, member of the CLNS Media family
00:30 and college football savant.
00:33 We're gonna be getting into a lot
00:34 of college football stuff today.
00:36 Reminder, the show is brought to you
00:37 by our friends at FanDuel.
00:39 We'll hear from them later.
00:40 But first, the big reason that the best day of the week
00:44 now is Thursday instead of Wednesday,
00:45 just for this week,
00:46 was that Gerard Mayo had his introductory press conference.
00:49 Now, what were your thoughts?
00:51 'Cause I felt like the reaction was kind of split.
00:53 There were people who thought he did a great job.
00:55 There were people who thought that, you know,
00:56 he and Robert Kraft maybe weren't the most convincing.
00:59 I lean more, you know, shocker,
01:01 me, Mr. Optimist or whatever.
01:02 I kind of lean more towards,
01:03 I thought they did a good job.
01:04 You know, Kraft had a little slip up at one point
01:07 that, you know, understanding the content
01:09 was kind of funny,
01:10 but I thought they did a pretty solid job
01:11 considering they really don't know
01:13 what's gonna happen with their staff
01:14 until Belichick gets his job
01:16 and then you start seeing who stays and who goes.
01:19 - Yeah, I thought he did.
01:21 And I just talked about this in full
01:22 with Brian Hines on Patriots Beat.
01:24 You can go back and find that on the Patriots Press Pass
01:27 ceiling, his YouTube channel.
01:28 I thought as much, there was that comment out,
01:32 like, you know, he needs to win his press conference.
01:34 Like as much as he could win it, I thought he won it.
01:37 I think when he was hired, one of their critiques,
01:40 and I understood it, like it was a genuine critique was,
01:44 if you're gonna fire Bill Belichick,
01:46 the greatest coach of all time,
01:48 it's clearly 'cause you feel something
01:49 structurally needs to change.
01:51 Why would you bring in somebody that,
01:53 in his playing career, only played for Bill,
01:55 in his coaching career, only coached for Bill?
01:57 Like how different from Bill is he really gonna be?
02:00 Different.
02:01 He made that blatantly clear yesterday.
02:04 Different.
02:05 That's not to say he won't take things from Bill.
02:07 I don't think it's gonna be a total departure,
02:09 but he said he's not gonna try to be Bill.
02:12 That part I genuinely believe.
02:13 Like Gerard Mayo is gonna be Gerard Mayo.
02:15 He's gonna run his own program.
02:17 He's gonna run his own system.
02:19 Now, will it work out?
02:21 Like does that actually turn into wins?
02:24 We're gonna find out.
02:25 We were never gonna get an answer to that yes or no.
02:28 We were never gonna find out yesterday,
02:30 watching him speak to reporters,
02:31 whether or not he can win football games as head coach.
02:33 The only way we'll find that out is playing the games.
02:36 But I think as much as you could have expected,
02:39 they were never gonna, like Robert Kraft was never,
02:42 you know, he got the full, the final say question.
02:45 He was never gonna be up there and be like,
02:47 oh yeah, it's Matt Grover.
02:47 Oh yeah, it's Elliott.
02:48 Oh yeah, we're hiring a GM.
02:49 He was never, and Gerard Mayo was never gonna be like,
02:52 oh yeah, no, these are my offensive special teams
02:55 coordinators, even though we haven't hired them yet,
02:56 I'll tell you who they are.
02:57 Like that was never gonna happen.
02:59 So for what you could realistically expect
03:02 from a day like that,
03:05 which I know Patriots fans aren't super familiar
03:07 with those events, but they're much more PR driven,
03:10 political, sell yourself to the fans,
03:12 sell yourself even to those inside the building.
03:15 In that regard, I thought Mayo did very well.
03:17 - Absolutely, and I think also the fact that Kraft
03:21 mentioned there's been a lot of criticism over, you know,
03:24 how quickly he went to Mayo,
03:26 the fact that they haven't yet named a general manager.
03:28 And he also dropped that they're probably gonna hire
03:30 a general manager relatively soon.
03:32 It may be after the draft, like it was reported,
03:34 but it doesn't sound like they plan on going with that one.
03:36 But he did mention that these are all people in the building
03:39 where they're going internally.
03:40 And that's just how they do business,
03:41 which to a degree you have to respect.
03:43 It's not like the Krafts are bad business people.
03:45 Like they've done a pretty good job in this business
03:47 for a while.
03:48 But on top of that, they said,
03:50 we have a lot of people who learned from, you know,
03:52 one of the greatest football minds in history.
03:55 So, you know, for all the people who defend Belichick,
03:57 and you know, rightly so in some ways,
03:59 obviously he's a tremendous coach,
04:01 but the part that slipped away from him with the offense
04:03 and the player personnel department things,
04:06 those were areas where he was stepping over people
04:08 who were learning under him, but had their own perspective.
04:10 So I still get the criticisms
04:13 and I'm not like trying to invalidate those,
04:15 but at the very least, it will be interesting
04:18 to see so many people who maybe weren't able
04:20 to really be themselves or really have their work shown
04:24 under Belichick, finally get that chance.
04:27 And we're going to get that chance pretty soon
04:29 because obviously we got free agency first,
04:31 but then we're going to have the draft.
04:33 And Trod Mayo had an interesting comment yesterday
04:37 while speaking to, I believe it was Steve Burton,
04:39 after his presser, where he said,
04:41 we're going to draft the best player
04:42 for a position that's very important.
04:44 You put the pieces together.
04:46 I know you were split on what that meant.
04:48 I want your take, but for me,
04:50 the body language afterwards, like, ah, I was like, okay,
04:53 I think, I don't think he was being super vague.
04:55 I think it was like, yeah,
04:56 I think everyone knows we're getting a quarterback.
04:58 That's probably what we're going to do.
04:59 But what were your thoughts?
05:00 Maybe I'm just being a little, you know, a little hopeful.
05:03 - Well, look, I mean, how do you not read that
05:05 and see quarterback?
05:06 The only thing holding me back is it's too good to be true
05:09 that he's just telling us, right?
05:11 I think, you know, the way I look at it could,
05:14 very important position or a position that's very important.
05:18 Maybe that's just how he says premium position,
05:20 which is a term we use all the time.
05:22 Premium positions are in no particular order,
05:25 quarterback, tackle, receiver, corner, edge rusher, right?
05:28 Those are the premium positions.
05:29 Those are the most expensive positions on the field.
05:31 It's the hardest, generally it's the thinnest talent groups.
05:34 All the wide receivers really seen a boost
05:36 the last couple of years.
05:37 Maybe he means that, and maybe he just means,
05:39 yeah, we're not, you know, no offense, Cole Strange,
05:42 we're not taking Cole Strange.
05:43 We're not taking post tackle.
05:47 We're taking a guy that's an impact,
05:49 he can make an impact in an impact position.
05:52 But like, that's really the only thing I have to say
05:54 it's not a quarterback, is just it's too good to be true
05:57 that he would tell us it is.
05:58 And it's not, obviously for us here, it's out of the norm.
06:02 It's not that out of the norm for other teams.
06:04 - Even to joke about it, even to make the joke,
06:07 I was like, what?
06:09 - Other teams sometimes if they're,
06:11 so the only thing is you don't really only do this
06:13 if you're picking top three, maybe four,
06:14 depending on the draft.
06:15 'Cause once you get to five,
06:17 you don't know what the draft looks like.
06:18 Like there may be, I think the Falcons are sitting set
06:20 and well, they're their own thing
06:21 'cause they're gonna get filled,
06:22 but you know, maybe the Giants are sitting there at fifth
06:26 saying like, oh yeah, we're, you know,
06:28 they could tell their fans,
06:29 yeah, we're gonna take a wide receiver.
06:30 And then Marvin Harrison Jr, Malik Nabors
06:31 both go before they get a chance.
06:33 And that completely changes the picture of it, right?
06:35 So when you're picking third,
06:38 you have a little more freedom to do that.
06:39 Sometimes teams will be like, yeah,
06:40 this is the position we want to address in the draft.
06:43 I, yeah, I think Daniels,
06:47 or I think a quarterback is the way,
06:49 and that's probably Daniels,
06:50 just the way the board looks right now,
06:51 could end up being May, but you know,
06:53 it's not like the Patriots are just starting
06:55 to scout these guys now.
06:56 They've been on them really for the last year.
06:58 But in the case of Daniels and May
07:01 who have multiple years as starters,
07:03 I mean, they follow these guys all the way through.
07:05 So they may look at it and they may know it.
07:08 At this point, yeah, you know,
07:09 maybe they don't know which one they like best,
07:11 but hey, we'd be comfortable taking either
07:13 of these guys third overall.
07:15 And we'll figure out who that is and where the board falls,
07:17 but we know we're going to have a chance
07:19 at one of these guys.
07:20 And there's an advantage in that
07:23 because then you look at it and say, all right,
07:26 that's our quarterback.
07:27 Let's go out and free agency and let's get players
07:30 that fit with this quarterback skillset
07:32 and internal freedoms even.
07:33 All right, this guy still makes sense in the new offense.
07:36 We're keeping him.
07:37 This guy doesn't, you know,
07:39 we're going to need this money to get this receiver.
07:41 So this guy's got to go like any good off season,
07:45 you plan around a quarterback.
07:47 Problem is when you don't know who your quarterback is,
07:49 it can be very hard to do that.
07:50 If you know you're taking Jayden Daniels or Drake May,
07:53 it makes it a little bit easier.
07:54 - And it's important to remind people
07:56 that the hay is pretty much in the barn
07:58 when it comes to draft evaluations.
08:00 Like the people who are in the front office
08:02 are not like us where we're kind of catching up,
08:04 watching the film, really getting an idea
08:06 of what all these prospects look like.
08:07 They already know the film stuff.
08:09 What changes is what happens in the combine.
08:12 If they go to bowl games, things like that,
08:14 where there are all-star games,
08:16 where they get an opportunity to maybe show some things
08:19 they had questions on.
08:20 Maybe if there were things where, you know,
08:21 their speed, their height, their hands, whatever it is,
08:23 that's when you start making adjustments,
08:25 but you're rarely going to see.
08:26 - Or just talk to them.
08:27 - Or just talk to them.
08:28 - Get to know them, yeah, that's important.
08:29 - And interviews, yeah.
08:30 So there will be changes.
08:32 There will be sliding and everything,
08:33 but it's not like Gerard Mayo
08:36 hasn't gotten people's feedback.
08:38 And this is who we like on the board.
08:39 Like they already have a good idea.
08:41 They just need more information to confirm.
08:43 I do want your take on this because we talk about it,
08:46 I feel like once a week, we do this once a week,
08:49 but I feel like we talk about pretty regularly.
08:50 Could the Patriots maybe go somewhere else
08:52 with a third pick?
08:54 Usually I kind of feel like, you know,
08:56 it's an interesting conversation
08:58 because the dynamics start to change.
09:00 Like we didn't have Caleb Williams having declared
09:01 or Marvin Harrison Jr.
09:03 Last time we did this show, so it was very different.
09:05 This time, we do know that Caleb Williams
09:07 and Marvin Harrison Jr. have declared,
09:09 but Dane Brugler, all right,
09:11 one of the best draft people you can follow on the planet.
09:14 He does a fantastic job.
09:16 He recently mocked the Patriots
09:18 to actually take Marvin Harrison Jr. at third overall,
09:21 and then wait to get Bo Nix,
09:23 who I've also heard from Lance Zerline
09:25 is going to be someone that he has ranked higher
09:27 than a lot of people are going to think.
09:29 So I need you to tell me
09:32 whether there is some validity to this
09:34 or whether it's just like, all right,
09:36 maybe the third round of the mock draft,
09:38 we're thinking a little too hard
09:39 and we're going to, you know,
09:40 get back to even as things go on
09:42 because we talked about it, like the road mix.
09:45 Yeah, he was able to silence some of that criticism
09:47 at times this season,
09:48 but I never saw anything where I was like this guy,
09:51 like if the Pats get him, I think there'll be okay.
09:54 I still think he's going to need a lot of help around him.
09:56 Anybody would, but more so him
09:58 than the top three guys.
10:00 So do you think that's a real possibility
10:01 that they get Marvin Harrison Jr. and Bo Nix,
10:03 or do you think it's quarterbacking?
10:04 I mean, look, it's a possibility.
10:06 Harrison's a fantastic player, but I don't think,
10:10 you know, if you get Jaden Daniels,
10:12 you instantly start building around him.
10:14 And if he's a bust, he's a bust, you start over.
10:16 Bo Nix is, he's older,
10:22 his floor is not nearly as high,
10:24 his ceiling's not as high.
10:27 You just wonder how his game's going to translate
10:30 to the NFL.
10:31 The whole idea of, all right, let's just take a court.
10:33 The NFL has gotten so good at scouting quarterbacks.
10:37 And Russell Wilson, the third round won't happen anymore.
10:41 Brock Purdy's an anomaly.
10:43 And part of the reason you have Brock Purdy
10:44 is because he's playing with the best,
10:46 I mean, can I say it?
10:47 The most talented offense in the NFL.
10:49 - Yeah, he's the most well coached.
10:51 Outside of like the straight drop back game,
10:53 it's like, yeah, you really can't get much better.
10:55 - You put Bo Nix in that offense,
10:57 you guys probably gonna look pretty good.
10:58 You put, you know, anybody, you put JJ McCarthy,
11:01 you put, who are some, I'm trying to think of like
11:05 the day three quarterbacks in this draft.
11:08 Normally I'm freaking out about those guys,
11:10 but you take literally Mr. Relevant, the last guy,
11:13 you drop him in that offense, it's gonna look pretty good.
11:16 Generally, that's not, you don't find franchise quarterbacks
11:20 after the first round.
11:22 I'm gonna give you the day two quarterbacks,
11:24 the last few years here at Taylor.
11:27 And these are, some of these were teams literally,
11:29 they needed a franchise quarterback and they said,
11:31 all right, we're gonna try to get our guy on day two
11:33 and see how that works out and, you know,
11:35 address another need.
11:36 So this is going back to 2019.
11:38 Will Levis, Hendon Hooker, Desmond Ritter,
11:43 Malik Willis, Matt Corral, Kyle Trask,
11:47 Callan Mond, Davis Mills, Jalen Hurts, Drew Locke,
11:52 Will Greer.
11:52 Those are your day two quarterbacks the last five years.
11:56 - A couple of X-Fast.
11:57 - I can keep going, I can keep going.
11:58 Mason Rudolph, Deshaun Kizer, Davis Webb, CJ Bethert,
12:03 Christian Hakenberg, Cody Kessler.
12:05 I'd say the last time there's a borderline
12:06 starting quarterback taken on day two
12:09 is probably Jacoby Bursette.
12:11 - Our guy, who hopefully will also return
12:14 to the Patriots this off season.
12:15 Whether it's as a mentor, as a bridge, whatever it is.
12:17 You just, I feel like he's somebody
12:18 you gotta get in this room.
12:19 - So best case scenario here is Jacoby Bursette.
12:23 And I'm not saying like, he's a very different player
12:25 stylistically than Bo Nix is,
12:26 but history, it would be great if they could do that.
12:29 It'd be great if they could take Marvin Harrison
12:31 and then go out on day two and still have a chance
12:33 at their franchise quarterback.
12:34 History tells us that's not how it works.
12:36 The good quarterbacks, they go, they're gone.
12:38 They're off the board and you say, okay, great.
12:41 Then take the quarterback next year.
12:43 One, you're burning a year of Marvin Harrison Jr.
12:46 on an affordable contract, which sucks.
12:47 And you risk him getting frustrated with the organization.
12:51 The last thing you want is by the time you get good,
12:53 he doesn't have the patience he wants out, which happens.
12:56 See wide receivers ask that all the time.
12:59 The other thing is, then you're beholden
13:01 to next year's quarterback class.
13:02 And I feel like people are acting like Marvin Harrison Jr.
13:07 is the last wide receiver prospect ever, right?
13:09 - Right.
13:10 - The last brain out of the station.
13:11 If you don't get Marvin Harrison Jr.,
13:13 you'll never get a good wide receiver.
13:15 No, there are other, believe it or not,
13:17 there will be other receivers
13:18 that are all pros in the future.
13:20 Some, in fact, in this draft and in future drafts.
13:23 Quarterback's not quite the same way.
13:25 A down wide, like last year
13:27 was a pretty down wide receiver.
13:29 It was probably the weakest year for wide receivers
13:31 in my time doing the draft.
13:33 And you still had Zay Flowers, Jordan Addison.
13:37 You got Puka Deku in the fifth round, right?
13:39 Demario Douglas in the sixth, like you did okay.
13:42 Whereas you're getting, if on a down year for quarterbacks,
13:47 Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ritter, Malik Willis,
13:49 Matt Corral, Bailey Zappi, Sam Howell,
13:52 Chris Oladuke and Skyler Thompson.
13:55 - Guys who do not want starting for your football team.
13:57 - Right, and Brock Purdy, but again,
14:00 we kind of already discussed he's a unique situation.
14:02 You hit a down year for receivers,
14:06 if that's your primary need,
14:08 you can still probably end up with a good wide receiver.
14:09 It just means you can't necessarily wait to draft one.
14:12 You wait for a down year for quarterback,
14:14 enjoy Kenny Pickett.
14:15 So that's where for me, it's like,
14:19 you have a chance to take an elite quarterback,
14:20 you better not be picking,
14:21 and that's the other thing.
14:22 You're picking a three.
14:24 Maybe there's a good quarterback draft next year,
14:26 but it's three deep and you win a couple of games
14:29 and you're picking at eight.
14:31 Now you don't have a chance to take the quarterback.
14:33 Get the quarterback now, you have the opportunity,
14:35 you have the chance, you have the draft capital.
14:37 You do that and then you move on.
14:39 And then you fill out the rest of it elsewhere.
14:41 'Cause also you can sign Tee Higgins.
14:44 There's no Tee Higgins equivalent
14:46 at the quarterback position.
14:47 You can sign Mike Evans.
14:49 There's no Mike Evans equivalent.
14:51 If AJ Brown's available for trade,
14:53 you're not trading for an AJ Brown equivalent quarterback.
14:55 There's just more ways to add a wide receiver
14:57 than there are a quarterback.
14:59 - And I feel like the Patriots are kind of
15:00 in their little Texans era,
15:02 where you kind of are hoping that the blueprint
15:04 that the Texans kind of followed carries through.
15:06 And look at the Texans,
15:07 their highest paid wide receiver is Robert Woods.
15:11 They got great value for Noah Brown,
15:13 obviously like not the first guy you think of
15:14 for the Texans.
15:15 I don't know why he's always there,
15:16 but he's a solid X for them.
15:17 Outside guy, runs crosses very well.
15:20 Like he's a guy who gives them some juice.
15:21 Nico Collins was a third round pick.
15:23 Tank Dell was a fourth round pick.
15:25 You can, and these are guys who literally are the reason
15:28 the Texans have been so explosive.
15:30 They haven't looked nearly as good without Tank Dell.
15:32 And Nico Collins has been balling really all season,
15:35 but especially since Tank went down.
15:36 So I agree.
15:38 You don't need to have the superstar bonafide,
15:41 like he's coming on the NFL field
15:43 and he's going to be in the Hall of Fame.
15:44 Like you don't need that guy,
15:45 especially if you have a quarterback
15:48 who raises the ceiling or the floor for the offense
15:50 and allows you to maybe spend later capital
15:53 on those kinds of guys and say,
15:55 "Hey, our scouting is very good.
15:56 "We can take a chance on these guys.
15:58 "Our quarterback will bring out the best in them."
16:00 Now, before we give some love to FanDuel,
16:02 I want to propose something
16:04 on the opposite side of the spectrum.
16:05 So you're not conservative and wait late
16:07 to get the quarterback.
16:08 Instead, would you be willing to trade up
16:11 so you can guarantee a spot or a shot at Caleb Williams?
16:15 Assuming what we're going to talk about later
16:18 with some other breaking news today
16:19 does not happen and Williams is actually available
16:22 at number one.
16:22 - Yeah, so I mean, I don't know how likely the Bears are
16:25 to trade that pick.
16:26 It's a monumental ask.
16:29 It's like, what am I giving up?
16:32 - Assuming they're very good for agency also.
16:34 Like, assuming they, like offensive line is set.
16:36 - Right, assuming they get the guys they need,
16:37 like under any quarterback.
16:39 - I think you probably have to give up your first,
16:40 your second, your third.
16:42 - And a future first.
16:43 - Or a fifth, and maybe a future first.
16:45 - You're going to have to give up a future first.
16:46 - Because then it's going to be a bidding war.
16:47 Yeah, because it's going to be a bidding war.
16:48 So yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:50 - Yeah, I mean, I'd entertain it.
16:52 I probably ultimately,
16:54 and some of this is how they feel about the quarterbacks.
16:56 Like I like Drake May and Jane Daniels.
16:58 So I'll sit here and say, you know,
17:02 I'd rather have, you know,
17:03 Jane Daniels in my first round pick next year.
17:05 But if they only like Caleb Williams and nobody else,
17:09 I do think it's a fair conversation to have.
17:11 I don't think it's that unrealistic to explore.
17:14 Personally, I ultimately wouldn't end up doing,
17:16 I probably wouldn't end up doing it
17:18 just because of how I feel about the other two guys.
17:20 But if you tell me, yeah, you know,
17:21 Jane Daniels scares me, Drake May scares me,
17:24 then yeah, that's the move.
17:25 - Yeah, agreed.
17:26 - Assuming the pairs are willing to deal it.
17:28 - Yeah, and we will get more into that soon.
17:30 But quick word from our friends at FanDuel.
17:33 Be right back.
17:34 - NFL season is wrapping up
17:36 and there's still time to get in on the action with FanDuel,
17:39 America's number one sports book.
17:42 Right now, new customers get 150 in bonus bets,
17:45 guaranteed when you place a $5 bet.
17:48 That's 150 bucks in bonus bets, win or lose.
17:51 And the app is so easy to use
17:53 and there are so many different ways to bet,
17:54 like live same game parlays,
17:57 find bets in the new explore tab,
17:59 make a parlay in the parlay hub,
18:00 the best way to find popular parlays and more.
18:03 So visit fanduel.com/boston
18:06 and make your first bet a layup,
18:08 FanDuel official partner of the NFL.
18:13 - All right, so before we get to the breaking, breaking news,
18:16 we have to address the fact
18:17 that Caleb Williams did declare
18:19 he's gonna be in the draft.
18:20 What were your thoughts?
18:21 What do you think was the reason he waited so late?
18:24 And what was your initial impression
18:25 before we get into, again,
18:26 some of the more breaking news from today?
18:28 - Yeah, I mean, he ran it right down to the wire, right?
18:31 He took it, I think he had like eight hours
18:33 left on that clock.
18:34 So it was a little sigh of relief.
18:37 I was honestly starting to wonder,
18:38 I was honestly starting to wonder,
18:39 could you put on him for giving us some drama
18:42 in a week where we certainly needed news
18:44 looking around for stuff to cover.
18:47 But no, he's in and he's the unquestioned quarterback one.
18:51 I think there was a window there
18:53 where maybe you were wondering if Drake May could catch him
18:55 and that Drake May really, I think,
18:57 had some flaws exposed late in the season.
18:59 You go back, you look at the full body of work
19:01 for Caleb Williams, you look at some of the,
19:02 he was put in some bad situations
19:04 by what was really not a good USC team.
19:06 Yeah, he's the best quarterback in this draft.
19:10 He should be the first overall pick.
19:12 - Agreed.
19:14 So that brings us to the breaking news.
19:16 Cliff Kingsbury, who's currently the senior offensive
19:18 analyst and quarterback coach at USC,
19:20 is expected to interview for the Bears job.
19:22 Now, this whole Bears coaching search has been a row,
19:26 or offensive coordinators, offensive coordinator search,
19:30 it's a mouthful, has been a roller coaster.
19:32 All right, we heard that Greg Roman was attached.
19:34 So it's like, oh, they're committing to Justin Fields.
19:36 Obviously, they're like, what,
19:37 are they going to hire Greg Roman
19:39 and then get one of the top three guys,
19:40 like maybe Jake Daniels?
19:41 But no, probably not going to do that.
19:43 They want to run the ball with Justin Fields,
19:45 which is scary for Justin's development as a passer.
19:47 Exciting to see him actually get
19:49 to fully exploit his rushing abilities.
19:50 We've seen some other names where it's kind of like,
19:52 all right, are they committed?
19:53 Are they not?
19:54 It's kind of up in the air.
19:55 But this feels like, one, if it happens,
19:58 we almost are guaranteed that Caleb Williams
20:00 will be the first pick off the board.
20:02 And then it creates a situation where the Patriots
20:05 are really just at the mercy of whatever
20:06 the commanders want to do,
20:07 'cause they're not going to trade out.
20:09 Just give me your thoughts on this news,
20:11 'cause I'll tell you, man,
20:12 it scared the dickens out of me, and I don't like it.
20:13 - So I think what the Bears are doing,
20:15 all this tells me for sure is the Bears don't know yet.
20:20 The Bears don't know yet what they're going to do
20:22 with Justin Fields.
20:23 And that's fine.
20:25 It's early.
20:26 My guess is they brought in Greg Roman,
20:28 said, what's your plan for Justin Fields?
20:30 Then they brought in Cliff Kingsbury
20:32 and said, what's your plan for Caleb Williams?
20:34 And that's, Cliff Kingsbury's not going to Chicago
20:38 to coach Justin Fields.
20:40 And Greg Roman's probably not bringing in
20:42 to coach Caleb Williams.
20:45 So my guess is they're doing, this is,
20:47 it's not OC1 or OC2, it's the package, right?
20:53 Do we want to go with Greg Williams' plan
20:55 and stick with Justin Fields,
20:56 or do we want to go with, or Greg Williams,
20:57 Greg Roman's plan is to stick with Justin Fields,
21:00 or do we want to go with Cliff Kingsbury's plan
21:01 and go with Caleb Williams?
21:04 I don't know what was said in the meetings.
21:05 I can't tell you.
21:07 I think Greg Roman with Justin Fields
21:09 is a very, very intriguing setup,
21:13 but we know what kind of offensive mind Cliff Kingsbury is,
21:16 and boom, he's going to have a quarterback
21:17 he already has a rapport with.
21:19 I said this about the Bears' decision.
21:21 It's a good problem to have,
21:26 but I'm glad I don't have to make the decision
21:27 'cause it's a tough one.
21:29 It's a real tough one.
21:30 I'd probably end up going, if I'm them,
21:32 going to Caleb Williams 'cause you reset the clock
21:34 on that rookie contract,
21:36 and you add assets by trading away Justin Fields.
21:39 But that's kind of my read on this is,
21:44 okay, they've heard the Justin Fields pitch.
21:46 They've heard the Caleb Williams pitch.
21:48 It's just going to be which one do they like better?
21:51 Which one do they believe in more?
21:53 - Fingers crossed that Roman knocked it out of the park
21:57 and that Cliff Kingsbury is scared
21:59 of the weather in Chicago.
22:00 I was born in Chicago.
22:01 I lived there until I was eight years old.
22:04 They don't call it the windy city because of the weather.
22:05 It's actually because of the politics.
22:07 But I'll tell you, when I was like five years old,
22:09 my babysitter was like walking me home from school.
22:12 I could not walk because we lived by the water
22:15 and it was just blowing.
22:16 I was like 10 minutes away from Soldier Field.
22:18 Wind was knocking me down the entire time.
22:20 She just had to basically pick me up and like run with me.
22:22 So hopefully that scares Cliff and he's just like,
22:25 nah, I think I like it better in LA.
22:27 - Yeah, I mean, that's a possibility too.
22:30 But if he goes there, it means he's open to it.
22:33 - And they're probably paying him pretty damn well.
22:36 - Oh no, he'd be probably the highest paid coordinator
22:39 in football, I would think if he takes that job
22:40 and he's gonna be there for a year or two
22:42 and then go be a head coach again.
22:43 He's not going there again to coach Justin Fields.
22:45 He's going there to run his system with the quarterback
22:47 he trusts and be a head coach again in two or three years
22:51 if that might be, could be one and done.
22:52 So yeah, now we wait and see.
22:56 We may not know.
22:57 We may not know until Justin Fields gets traded
22:58 or we may not know until the pick gets traded.
23:01 But this is, I think that they're exploring all options
23:05 as they should, like frustrating for Patriots fans,
23:07 I get it, but this is what the Bears should be doing
23:10 and they're doing it.
23:11 - If you're the Falcons sitting at the eighth overall pick,
23:15 do you give it up for Justin Fields?
23:18 - Falcons at eight?
23:19 It's not Bill's kind of quarterback though.
23:22 - It's not, but like think about his options.
23:26 At eight, you're probably swinging at like a Penix
23:29 and like he's more that style of quarterback,
23:32 but even then it's like, do they trade back?
23:34 - Let's be honest here.
23:35 Bill's trading a third for Jimmy Garoppolo
23:37 and drafting Braylon Trice or Dallas Turner.
23:40 Like he's not taking a quarterback at eight.
23:42 - All right, I thought it was, it would be fun.
23:45 'Cause usually, also, but here's the thing.
23:47 He's not gonna have general manager control.
23:50 That's a big part of this too.
23:51 I really don't think he will 'cause it's-
23:53 - This is from Ian, this is from not Ian Rapport.
23:55 This is from Florio just now talking about the meeting.
23:59 The fact that Belichick will meet with the Falcons
24:01 again implies that Blank is also ready to agree
24:04 to whatever else Belichick wants,
24:06 such as potentially Belichick's own personnel department
24:10 and no interference whatsoever from CEO, Rich McKay.
24:14 Bill's not going somewhere he doesn't have final say.
24:16 - Don't they already have a general manager
24:18 who's been doing really well?
24:19 - It's Terry Fontenot, he is very good.
24:21 He is going to be at this meeting,
24:23 which adds a layer to it.
24:24 - Right, that's why I figured-
24:25 - I wonder if Bill makes Terry Fontenot his macro,
24:29 which basically says, "Do all the legwork,
24:31 present me with the options, and I'll make the decision."
24:35 I think that's kind of what this is setting up for.
24:38 - Is that even an ideal situation though?
24:40 'Cause it's like, yeah, you get to work
24:41 and learn under Bill Belichick,
24:43 but also you're getting a demotion for like three years.
24:46 - It's not up to him.
24:47 - True, true, true.
24:49 - You know, if you're him, if I'm him,
24:51 I look at it one of two ways.
24:52 All right, fine, I'm outta here.
24:54 I'm not gonna get bossed around by Bill Belichick.
24:55 Or, all right, I'll hang out, cash into my ring,
24:59 learn a thing or two,
25:00 and it's my team again in two or three years.
25:03 - Yeah, that's an interesting situation.
25:06 Man, but Justin Fields in that offense,
25:07 I just want them to get an athletic quarterback
25:09 who's like fun to watch,
25:11 and also can just lean on the insane artillery
25:14 that they've got over there.
25:15 - You'll get Jimmy Garofalo and you'll like it.
25:16 - I won't like it, you can't make me.
25:20 - That was me when they drafted Jimmy Garofalo
25:23 in whatever it was, 2013.
25:25 Oh, he's the next guy, never saw it.
25:27 Never, ever saw it.
25:28 - I thought he was intriguing.
25:31 Like, I thought that they opened the playbook up a little,
25:33 really it was just the Shanahan playbook.
25:34 Now we kinda, I remember looking back on it,
25:36 I was like watching Jimmy back in 20,
25:38 what it was, 2016 or whatever.
25:40 And I was like, literally,
25:41 I didn't, like, they were running Shanahan stuff
25:43 that you never saw from them.
25:44 Like the bootlegs, all the slide stuff.
25:46 I'm like, "Wade, where is this with Tom?"
25:49 They were doing the same stuff,
25:50 and now they tried to do it with Matrician,
25:52 it didn't work.
25:53 I'm gonna get myself lost here.
25:54 All right, this is a bit of a shorter show
25:56 because, you know, we hit the breaking news,
25:57 there wasn't a ton of it, no bowl games or anything.
25:59 We'll come up with something a little,
26:01 I was gonna say, something a little longer.
26:05 I was trying to use a good word for,
26:07 girthier, I'm just gonna say girthier, for the next show.
26:10 I couldn't find a good word, I just, you know what,
26:12 why not? - We'll have good stuff
26:13 next week. - This is family.
26:14 - We got some real stuff to dig into next week.
26:16 - But this is some real good stuff.
26:18 Because how the hell do you get nine years of eligibility?
26:22 What of the children?
26:23 This is a grown man.
26:25 Please explain this because what the hell is going on?
26:28 - So Cam McCormick, AKA my personal hero,
26:31 announced today he will be declaring for his,
26:34 or he will be reapplying for his ninth year of eligibility
26:38 in college.
26:39 He called it his last ride.
26:41 He's been in college since I was in college.
26:44 So he was actually, no, he hasn't been,
26:46 that makes me feel a little bit,
26:47 he was, he's at the U now, he started at Oregon.
26:50 He was in the same recruiting class as Justin Herbert.
26:53 Think about that.
26:55 But he had, what is it?
26:56 I think he had- - He's on his second contract.
26:59 - He's been in college football longer
27:01 than a lot of guys have been in the NFL.
27:02 And he's only, I think he's only caught
27:04 like eight passes or something.
27:06 - What does he do?
27:08 - So he's- - What do you do?
27:11 Does he have a job?
27:12 Does he just do this for fun? - No, he's on his,
27:14 he has his bachelor's, he has his master's,
27:16 and now he's, it's not a PhD, I forget.
27:19 Somebody found his LinkedIn,
27:20 he's on some third kind of degree at the U.
27:22 Yeah, he's only caught, he's caught 26 passes.
27:26 So he hasn't played all eight years.
27:30 So he redshirted as a freshman.
27:33 He had two more medical redshirts.
27:36 He sat out the COVID year.
27:37 So that's four years right there
27:39 that essentially don't count.
27:40 And then he gets the extra year back
27:44 because of the COVID stuff.
27:45 So this is somebody who took advantage
27:47 of all the little- - Loopholes.
27:51 - Loopholes in the NCAA, he's a true,
27:53 you ever see the movie "Van Wilder"?
27:55 - Yeah. - Yeah, it's Van Wilder
27:58 basically, but playing football.
28:00 I want this man to be a Patriot.
28:01 I need this man to be a Patriot.
28:03 Not necessarily, like could the Patriots use a tight end?
28:05 Yes, I just want like to talk to him.
28:08 - Yeah, honestly, what were you doing all that time, man?
28:12 Like, were you just like living way off campus?
28:14 Were you just like avoiding eye contact
28:16 with all the 18 year olds?
28:17 Like what are you doing?
28:18 How old is he? - I saw somebody
28:19 quote tweet it and was like,
28:21 like just join the workforce.
28:23 He's the reason our- - Honestly!
28:24 - Cam, he's the reason our economy's in such bad shape.
28:28 No, I just- - He's still younger than me.
28:32 He's 25. - He's 25, okay.
28:33 - He's still pretty young. - He's older than Lamar.
28:36 - Oh my God.
28:39 Lamar is such an immensely accomplished human being.
28:43 Oh my God. - Okay, did Lamar play
28:45 nine seasons of college football?
28:46 Like winning an NFL MVP is one thing,
28:49 but as somebody who graduated college a semester early,
28:51 figuring out a way to stay there for five extra years,
28:54 give the man a Nobel Peace Prize.
28:56 I just brought it up to you, 'cause again,
28:58 this is the kind of thing where like,
29:00 if you're wondering if you should get into college football
29:02 or not, like get interested in it,
29:04 there's just goofy stuff like this.
29:05 It just makes it, this guy is going to be
29:08 must watch this year.
29:10 And he's gonna get a big NIL deal
29:12 that everybody's gonna be following.
29:14 A fun, goofy story.
29:16 - That's what I was gonna say,
29:17 has he had NIL deals in the past?
29:19 Like, has he at least been cashing in on this
29:21 or like, what's good?
29:22 - I don't know if he's ever had individual.
29:23 I know he's been part of like collectives,
29:25 but this year now, like the ninth year,
29:28 he might get last ride.
29:29 He might get, you know, a tire dealership,
29:32 a car dealership.
29:33 - Oh my God.
29:34 - Right, Cam McCormick's last ride brought to you by,
29:37 no, he should get, you should get 30 for 30.
29:39 - Oh, honestly, he should.
29:41 This is fascinating.
29:42 - I'll say this too.
29:43 Like I said, like this isn't just,
29:45 he just, you know, just wants to keep hanging out in college.
29:47 I mean, he has, I know one of them is a torn ACL.
29:50 He had another significant injury too.
29:53 This guy loves football.
29:54 - I guess.
29:55 How many surgeries has he had?
29:57 Isn't it like, yeah.
29:58 How many season injuries was it?
29:59 It said somewhere.
30:00 - I think it's three, right?
30:01 It's three or four.
30:02 And he keeps coming back.
30:05 He keeps coming and it's not as simple as,
30:07 oh, I want to stay in college.
30:08 Like you're asking a lot from that.
30:11 'Cause you got to put your body through a ton
30:13 to come back from these injuries.
30:14 And so, in that sense, I respect it.
30:16 I honestly hope he kind of gets into coaching.
30:19 'Cause this is somebody who seems like
30:20 they have the makeup of a coach.
30:22 - Also someone who needs to stay the hell off in NFL field
30:24 and just let his body recover.
30:26 So we're talking about multiple season ending injuries
30:27 before he's 25 years old.
30:29 He's been playing football.
30:30 I'm assuming he's a blocker or like a special teamer.
30:32 So it's not like he's not getting hit.
30:34 That's, I'm looking it up.
30:36 There was some medical term
30:37 that I've never even seen before
30:38 that it said he had to deal with in terms of injuries.
30:41 So he missed three of those years due to an ankle injury,
30:45 tore his Achilles in 2021,
30:46 and was hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis.
30:49 Rhabdomyolysis?
30:54 - I don't know.
30:54 I didn't go to college for nine years.
30:56 That's why he's sick.
30:57 - He burned into college.
30:58 The destruction of striated muscle cells.
31:03 Oh yeah, man.
31:04 Retire, hang it up.
31:05 It's time to go.
31:06 It was a nice run this year.
31:08 It needs to be it.
31:09 Get into coaching, get into insurance,
31:10 whatever you gotta do, keep your body strong.
31:12 - I'm enjoying the last ride.
31:12 No, again, he should get into coaching.
31:14 He clearly loves football, doesn't mind the grind.
31:16 And we know he can relate to people younger than him.
31:19 So.
31:20 - For now.
31:23 He's not too far away from being the old head.
31:25 - Bring him in on a coaching internship.
31:27 Oh yeah, you can still give him an internship.
31:29 He's 25.
31:31 Or he's in college.
31:32 You can still give him an internship.
31:34 I don't know.
31:35 It's a fun story.
31:36 I'll be rooting for him this year.
31:38 And hopefully, hopefully, I don't think he'll be drafted.
31:42 Hopefully he at least declares for the draft next year.
31:44 So we can get to talk about him in the pre-draft process.
31:48 - If he's Mr. Irrelevant, oh my God.
31:51 Like then you have to give him a 30 for 30 or something.
31:54 He needs it.
31:55 - Do not tempt me with a good time, Taylor.
31:58 - Oh my God.
31:59 - Here's how long he's been in college.
32:00 I'm just realizing this.
32:01 He started a year after they stopped
32:06 making the NCAA football game.
32:09 And he will be in the revival.
32:11 He is almost old enough to have been in both games.
32:17 - We need a list.
32:18 We need a list of just insane perspective
32:21 on when he got into college and when he left.
32:23 - I mean, what were you doing nine years ago?
32:24 So nine years ago when he started college,
32:27 so that would have been fall of 2016,
32:30 I was a year out of college
32:34 and I just finished up working
32:36 as the voice of UMass Lowell men's and women's lacrosse.
32:40 - Nice.
32:42 - I was living with my parents.
32:43 And in the time that it took him to go through college,
32:45 I have gotten here.
32:47 You can say that.
32:48 Now, whether or not that's impressive,
32:49 I think people would have different viewpoints.
32:51 But I mean, that was like four cars ago for me.
32:54 - I think I was a junior in college, I think.
33:00 No, I graduated in 2019, 20...
33:02 Oh my God, I think I was a pledge.
33:04 I think I was a pledge, it was my second year of college.
33:07 That's crazy.
33:08 This man was getting his career started
33:09 while I was getting, you know, you don't see that.
33:11 - You were both just getting started in college.
33:14 - Yeah, pretty much.
33:15 That is absolutely wild.
33:17 All right, well, best of luck to him.
33:19 We will be following this story.
33:20 If there are any updates whatsoever,
33:22 I promise you will get them from us.
33:25 Alex, I think that's a great place to close out today.
33:28 Let the people know what you got coming down the pipeline.
33:30 They already know where to follow you.
33:31 Just give them the goods.
33:32 - All right, new Catch-22 this morning with Evan Lazar,
33:34 and we'll start getting into some quarterback breakdowns
33:36 next week on 985thesportshub.com.
33:38 - Phenomenal.
33:40 All right, thank you, buddy.
33:41 Thank you all for watching.
33:43 Sorry we had to move it back a day,
33:44 but Wednesday is once again the best damn day of the week
33:47 from here on out.
33:49 And I will also try to give you a heads up
33:50 in case anything changes in the future.
33:52 But for now, take care of yourselves.
