00:07 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most noteworthy movie fight scenes
00:12 from each year of the 21st century so far that have delivered on the thrill, choreography, and sheer violence.
00:19 [Music]
00:25 2000. Yu Shulian vs. Zhen Yu, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
00:31 There are a lot of fantastic fights in this influential wuxia martial arts film.
00:35 However, this one not only tops the others, it also surpasses every other memorable movie clash from the first year of the new millennium.
00:43 [Speaking Chinese]
00:46 [Gunshots]
00:48 Following an argument, Yu Shulian battles the younger Zhen Wu, who wields the powerful Green Destiny Sword,
00:54 Shulian's greater experience is apparent, as she uses a wide variety of weapons in the training room against her lesser skilled opponent.
01:01 The beautiful lightning-fast choreography and creative use of weaponry makes this a top-notch duel,
01:07 and one of the best sword fights of the 21st century thus far.
01:10 [Speaking Chinese]
01:19 2001. Massage Parlor Fight, Rush Hour 2.
01:23 Jackie Chan is one of the kings of martial arts movies, and the Rush Hour films are some of his finest Hollywood efforts.
01:29 In the second installment, Chan's character Lee and his American partner James Carter investigate Ricky Tan.
01:35 Ricky, did you hear what I just said? I'm busy too now, get on your feet. Get up! Get on your feet!
01:40 I know you. You are Lee's American friend, right?
01:43 No, I'm Lee's new muscle. Now don't let this robe fool you, this is the only color they had left. Now I said get up.
01:49 They confront Tan at a massage parlor, where an unfortunate number of the clientele are Tan's men.
01:54 The ensuing fight is a great example of Jackie Chan's signature style,
01:58 seamlessly blending humor and action while incorporating the environment into the choreography.
02:04 Towels, chairs, garbage cans, everything is fair game.
02:07 And Carter pulls his weight too. It's a fight that's as funny and entertaining as its unfortunate conclusion.
02:13 I ain't never been humiliated and embarrassed like that in my whole entire life.
02:17 Gotta be running around Hong Kong butt naked, thanks to you.
02:20 -Thanks to me? -Yeah, thanks to you.
02:22 2002, Nameless vs. Long Sky, Hero
02:26 Truth and fiction are blurred in this beautiful wuxia film.
02:30 A nameless swordsman recounts his encounter with Long Sky, a master spearman to a king.
02:35 Their confrontation unfolds in a courtyard under the pouring rain,
02:38 accompanied by a musician and operatic shouting.
02:41 [speaking in Chinese]
03:01 As the two stand poised, they begin to visualize their battle, depicted in black and white.
03:06 Their imagined clash is incredibly intense,
03:09 combining quick, rapid strikes with the more fantastical movements wuxia is known for.
03:13 [speaking in Chinese]
03:19 And it all builds up to a real final strike from Nameless.
03:22 The intensity of the fight is beautifully contrasted with the serenity of the music and atmosphere.
03:28 Plus, it pits martial arts legends Donnie Yen and Jet Li against each other.
03:32 2003, The Bride vs. The Crazy 88, Kill Bill Vol. 1
03:38 Honestly, our pick for this year was a toss-up between this and the hallway fight from Oldboy.
03:43 If that's your choice for 2003, we won't argue with you.
03:46 Still, our favorite remains this explosive showdown from Quentin Tarantino's Revenge Epic.
03:51 "You didn't think it was gonna be that easy, did you? You know, for a second there?"
03:57 "Yeah, I kinda did."
04:00 "Silly rabbit. Tricks are for kids."
04:06 Beatrix Kiddo, aka The Bride, faces off against the formidable Yakuza army of O-Ren Ishii.
04:12 The Bride cuts through dozens of goons in a gloriously over-the-top fashion,
04:17 with ridiculous limb removals and blood galore.
04:20 Paying homage to Asian action cinema of the 1970s,
04:23 the scene incorporates elements such as sound effects and a ton of wire work.
04:35 Needless to say, this one-woman army fight is a blood-soaked feast for the senses.
04:40 Superhero movies have some iconic fight scenes, and this one is among the most memorable.
04:49 Spider-Man confronts Dr. Octopus atop a clock tower.
04:53 "Where is she?"
04:53 "Oh, she'll be just fine. Let's talk."
05:02 However, their battle soon moves to a speeding metro train.
05:05 The duo fights on the top, by the side, and right in the middle of the train cars,
05:10 making full use of their exceptional mobility and limbs in the choreography.
05:14 And while Spider-Man does get knocked off a few times, his comebacks are incredible.
05:29 Doc Ock eventually dips, though not before forcing Spidey to save the train and its occupants.
05:34 It's a fight scene as amazing and memorable as its combatants,
05:40 and it has remained in the public consciousness for years.
05:43 Long-take fight scenes are among the most impressive out there,
05:51 and the staircase battle from this Tony Jaa flick is especially fantastic.
05:55 Jaa's character, Kam, assaults a building solo, working his way through thugs up four stories.
06:01 The sheer number of stunts and the amount of practice that went into the sequence is incredible.
06:11 Props are broken, stuntmen take falls, guys are thrown off of balconies.
06:23 And through it all, Kam is relentless, taking down his opponents with both brutal efficiency
06:28 and plenty of flair. It's a fight that's often been imitated, though never surpassed.
06:32 Yet another thrilling Jet Li fight, this one sees the martial arts star play real-life wushu master,
06:43 Huo Yuanjia. Huo has an argument that escalates into a fight with rival martial artist Qin Lei
06:48 at a restaurant.
06:49 [Speaking Chinese]
07:04 The duo initially clashes with swords, using them everywhere from low to the ground to hanging
07:09 from ceiling rafters. However, their weapons are eventually destroyed or discarded, and their fight
07:15 turns into a brawl that concludes with Qin's death.
07:18 [Speaking Chinese]
07:21 The battle is both larger than life and intensely personal, with the stormy atmosphere and brutal
07:26 hits only adding to the ferocity. The movie's title may be fearless, but it scares us just how
07:32 great this scene is.
07:33 Many of the most memorable movie fights feature some heightened sense of skill or fantasy.
07:42 This one goes the opposite way, to great effect.
07:45 [Speaking Chinese]
07:56 Russian mobster Nikolai Luzhin is ambushed in a Turkish bathhouse by two Chechen assassins.
08:01 Naked and bleeding, he fends off his attackers by the skin of his teeth. Despite being injured
08:06 repeatedly, Nikolai manages to turn the tables on the Chechens by breaking limbs and using their
08:11 own knives against them. The brutal, stark realism of this scene makes for a shocking and visceral
08:17 experience that distinguishes it from other movie fights from 2007, and indeed, many other years.
08:22 In this biopic battle, Donnie Yen takes on the role of the titular Grandmaster of the
08:32 martial arts style Wing Chun. Sadistic leaders of the Japanese occupation army force local Chinese
08:37 citizens to fight for rice against karate masters. Angered by the death of his friend in one of these
08:49 matches, Ip Man challenges ten black belts. He doesn't just defeat them all, he completely
08:54 destroys them. The broken bones and powerful rapid-fire hits are heightened by Donnie Yen's
09:00 emotionally charged performance, creating a fight that's tragic, haunting, and utterly electrifying.
09:06 Major props to the last guy for not giving up, even in the face of that overwhelming onslaught.
09:16 It may have occurred in a direct-to-video movie, but that doesn't make this blood and bone fight
09:26 any less legit. Isaiah Bone squares off in a match against Pretty Boy Price in an underground ring,
09:31 observed by a wealthy audience. The two of them gradually feel each other out,
09:45 and while their moves are performative at first, the intensity of the bout increases over time.
09:51 Price gets too cocky, though, and Bone rapidly punishes him for it. Although he ultimately
09:57 forfeits, it's clear that Bone was the victor here. The setting of two guys in a ring may seem simple,
10:03 but the choreography is incredible, featuring rapid exchanges, high kicks, grappling, and that
10:09 remarkable double roundhouse kick from Bone. This fight scene from 2010's Inception is just as
10:19 mind-bending as the rest of the surreal thriller. In the scene, Yusuf is driving a van carrying
10:24 Arthur and his fellow dream thieves, who are all sedated in a shared dream set in a hotel.
10:29 While Arthur confronts several assailants in a hallway, Yusuf flips the van,
10:52 shattering the gravity in the hotel. This unique concept results in a visual spectacle of a fight,
10:58 as Arthur and his foes struggle to navigate the ceiling,
11:01 floor, and walls of the hallway and an adjacent room, all in zero-g.
11:05 For as grounded as the physical combat is, the use of the environment is out of this world.
11:21 2011 - Rama and Andi vs. Mad Dog - The Raid
11:25 Although this Indonesian action film features plenty of intense fights,
11:29 including its own spectacular hallway brawl, the standout is undoubtedly the final clash.
11:34 Rama arrives as Mad Dog is torturing his brother Andi.
11:46 With an undying passion for combat, Mad Dog lets Andi go,
11:50 to ensure he gets a better fight from two opponents. And what a fight it is!
11:55 On a technical level, their battle is nothing short of incredible,
11:58 with grounded yet extravagant choreography featuring high knees and several gnarly throws.
12:03 But it's only through pure chance that the brothers are able to overcome Mad Dog's
12:14 inhuman persistence. The ferocity and violence build and build right along with the music
12:19 up until the final bloody conclusion. Truly breathtaking.
12:23 2012 - Batman vs. Bane - The Dark Knight Rises
12:28 When most people think of superhero fights, they typically envision the hero triumphing
12:32 over the villain. This one is the stark opposite. Led into a trap by Selina Kyle,
12:38 Batman is faced with the mass terrorist Bane.
12:41 Despite Batman's skills in building anger, Bane is completely unaffected by his every move.
12:47 The villain taunts the Dark Knight throughout their battle,
12:49 before revealing his plans and breaking the hero's back.
12:53 The near absence of music heightens the impact of each blow,
12:57 adding to the mounting sense of despair. Throw in some crazy music,
13:01 and the villain is ready to go.
13:03 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:06 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:09 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:12 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:14 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:16 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:18 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:21 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:23 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:27 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:29 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:32 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:35 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:38 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:41 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:44 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:47 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:50 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:52 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
13:55 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
13:57 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
14:01 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
14:03 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
14:06 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
14:09 The music is a great way to show the hero's determination to fight,
14:12 and the fact that he's not afraid of the dark.
14:14 The rain-swept, neon-lit cityscape serves as a beautiful backdrop,
14:18 enhancing the visual spectacle.
14:20 Even more, the film brilliantly exploits its absurd premise,
14:34 with moments like a huge boat being used as a bat.
14:37 It's giant mechs fighting giant monsters!
14:39 What more could you ask for?
14:41 2014 - Kitchen Fight - The Raid 2
14:45 Cinema in 2014 was stacked with numerous breathtaking combat scenes.
14:49 While the church fight from Kingsman certainly ranks high,
14:52 The Raid 2 went above and beyond to deliver some insane action in this scene.
14:57 Rama comes upon the assassin in a kitchen while heading towards their mutual boss.
15:07 The ensuing fight is a textbook example of telling a story through choreography.
15:11 It begins with simple hand-to-hand combat,
15:14 escalates to incorporating their environment,
15:16 and ultimately culminates in a dramatic knife showdown.
15:19 Loaded with remarkably imaginative choreography,
15:29 inventive use of space, and an absolutely vicious conclusion,
15:33 the kitchen fight isn't just the best of 2014,
15:36 it's one of the best period.
15:38 Even anime pays tribute to it.
15:40 2015 - Tak and Kit vs Ko-Chun - SPL II - A Time for Consequences
15:46 Ten years later and Tony Jha's still got it.
15:48 The Muay Thai master is paired with Chinese star Wu Jing as Tak and Kit respectively.
15:53 The finale of the film sees the duo battle Ko-Chun,
15:55 the corrupt warden at the prison where Tak works, in a high-rise building.
16:00 [Fighting]
16:08 The furious two-on-one fight is epic in every sense of the word.
16:12 From the deft display of opposing fighting styles,
16:15 to the grandiose classical music that scores it.
16:25 Although Ko-Chun's spectacular kick-heavy attacks and sneaky needles prove arguably superior,
16:31 the warden also illustrates why wearing a tie during a fight is not the best idea.
16:35 Despite the intensity and emotion of Cap and Bucky's fight with Iron Man,
16:45 at the end of the day, the airport brawl is the one everybody talks about.
16:49 The Avengers disagree over the Sokovia Accords,
16:52 which would have put them under UN regulation.
16:55 Ross gave me 36 hours to bring you in.
16:57 That was 24 hours ago.
16:59 Can you help a brother out?
17:00 You're after the wrong guy.
17:01 Your judgment is askew.
17:02 Your old war buddy killed innocent people.
17:06 This leads them to settle things the way superheroes usually do, by punching each other.
17:10 The wide variety of powers and skill sets play off each other in very satisfying ways.
17:16 There are so many highlights,
17:17 from Spider-Man's big debut to Ant-Man's colossal transformation and War Machine's tragic fall.
17:23 It's such a dense and varied battle that offers something new to appreciate with each viewing.
17:28 Another spectacular seemingly one-shot sequence,
17:35 2017's best fight sees Charlize Theron as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton,
17:40 escorting a defector through Berlin.
17:42 The duo takes refuge in a building,
17:44 and Broughton ambushes several KGB agents lying in wait in a stairwell.
17:47 Wait in the bathroom, I'm not dead.
17:49 I'm hypnotized, hypnotized!
17:50 Faster, faster!
17:52 Even after taking down five of them,
17:54 the intense struggle continues,
17:55 as Broughton faces her final adversary in a nearby apartment.
17:59 Am I your bitch now?
18:00 The hits throughout are painful and gritty,
18:05 with the camera skillfully immersing the audience right in the middle of the action,
18:09 like a bystander witnessing the bloody violence unfold.
18:12 After watching such a fantastic fight,
18:14 you'll be just as impressed by the action as the audience.
18:18 If you've seen a fantastic fight,
18:19 you'll be just as out of breath as she is.
18:22 2018, bathroom fight,
18:24 Mission Impossible Fallout.
18:26 Nowhere is safe from fight scenes,
18:28 not even the restroom.
18:30 Ethan Hunt and CIA agent August Walker attack a man they want to impersonate in a bathroom.
18:35 However, things take an unexpected turn when the man, John Lark, proves to be a formidable opponent.
18:44 While this is perhaps best remembered for Henry Cabell's famous arm reload,
18:48 the rest of the sequence is equally good.
18:51 The room gets half destroyed,
18:53 as the combatants are thrown through walls, mirrors, and stall doors.
18:57 Amid the chaos, each punch, kick, and elbow hits like a truck in an enclosed space.
19:02 The filmmakers embarked on a mission to create an unbelievably impressive fight scene,
19:13 and undoubtedly succeeded.
19:15 2019, antique weapons fight,
19:18 John Wick Chapter 3, Parabellum.
19:20 The third film featuring the most feared assassin in the entire underworld,
19:24 Parabellum offers a plethora of excellent fight scenes.
19:28 While the tag team dog brawl with Halle Berry's character is also a treat,
19:31 this one is just too much fun.
19:33 Pursued by every killer in New York,
19:36 John Wick escapes into an antique weapons shop.
19:39 [Glass shattering]
19:41 After some impromptu gun modding, he's attacked by multiple combatants.
19:51 Wick manages to disarm them before they all become aware of their surroundings.
19:55 Employing every knife, axe, and other edged weapon they can access,
19:59 the assailants attack each other,
20:01 at one point even engaging in a snowball fight with knives.
20:04 [Glass shattering]
20:06 Blending entertainment and sheer terror,
20:11 this scene is like a bolt to the brain.
20:13 2020, Wanner, Extraction.
20:16 Tyler Rake is a mercenary hired to rescue Ovi,
20:19 an Indian drug lord's son after he's kidnapped.
20:22 Unfortunately, Tyler's team is killed at their evac point by Saju,
20:26 the drug lord's right-hand man.
20:31 Pursued by Saju and local corrupt police through the streets of Dhaka,
20:34 this largely continuous sequence unfolds with gripping car chases
20:38 and intense close-quarters combat.
20:40 The encounter between Tyler and the cops in an apartment complex
20:44 is frenetic and bloody.
20:45 On the other hand,
20:52 his knife fight with Saju in the street is fraught with tension and anger.
20:55 It may not be entirely seamless,
20:58 but this 12-minute scene is impressive nonetheless.
21:01 2021, Bus Fight, Nobody.
21:04 Bob Odenkirk's Hutch Mansell doesn't look like a badass,
21:08 yet you should never judge a book by its cover.
21:10 When the former assassin is hoping for a fight,
21:12 one comes to him when a bunch of gangsters get on his bus and harass a young woman.
21:16 Hutch makes good on his promise to mess them up,
21:25 and he does so using his fists,
21:28 knives,
21:28 a purse,
21:29 and anything else he can lay his hands on.
21:31 No one comes out of this thing unscathed,
21:33 and the entire scene toes the line perfectly between realistic and gratuitous violence.
21:38 It's a glorious mess,
21:42 but we are not sorry it came out on top this year.
21:44 2022, Ram vs. Beam, Triple R.
21:49 This over-the-top Indian epic is jam-packed with amazing fight scenes.
21:53 The piggyback jail escape is ridiculously awesome.
21:56 The final forest battle is glorious,
21:58 but the heart of the movie is the bromance between Komaram Beam and A. Rama Raju,
22:02 which makes their fight the pinnacle of the movie and indeed 2022 as a whole.
22:07 The best friends confront each other in the middle of Beam's assault on the governor's mansion.
22:27 Each blow hits home that much harder,
22:29 since the emotion of their shattered friendship pervades the scene,
22:32 complementing the fantastic choreography and larger-than-life imagery.
22:36 It truly feels like a legendary clash between titans,
22:39 one that is only made much better by Ram punching a freaking tiger with fire.

23:08 2023, 20-Minute Prison Escape, Extraction 2.
23:14 This year had a few formidable contenders.
23:18 While John Wick Chapter 4 nearly clinched it with that fiery shotgun shootout,
23:22 Extraction 2 achieved victory with this incredible 21-minute fight sequence.
23:26 Tyler Rake is out to extract his ex-wife's sister and her children from a Georgian prison.
23:31 Tyler first has an intense clash in a coal room. Then he's forced to transport his former
23:50 sister-in-law through the prison yard amid a violent riot. That's followed up by a car chase
23:54 through the woods, culminating in a harrowing train journey, featuring fights both inside
23:59 and on top of the compartments. Each portion is excellent on its own, but stitching them
24:16 together solidifies this as the best action sequence of 2023. Did we leave out any movie
24:22 fight you think emerged victor in its respective year? Share your thoughts in the comments.
