Mitsuko Hilaire, une jeune femme d’origine franco-japonaise, vit seule, avec sa fille de dix ans, suite au décès de son mari. Il se trouve que le grand jardin de sa maison abrite un cabanon dans lequel elle loge gracieusement un vieux soldat de l’armée de Napoléon prénommé James.
Mais un jour d’été, sa fille Rose tombe gravement malade et les médecins appelés à son chevet semblent incapables d’établir un diagnostique clair. Entre désarroi et anxiété, la maladie de la fillette fait ressurgir chez James et Mitsuko des douleurs passées qu’ils croyaient tous deux profondément enfouis…
Mitsuko Hilaire, a young woman of French-Japanese origin, lives alone, with her ten-year-old daughter, following the death of her husband. It turns out that the large garden of her house houses a shed in which she graciously houses an old soldier from Napoleon's army named James. But one summer day, her daughter Rose falls seriously ill and the doctors called to her bedside seem incapable of establishing a clear diagnosis. Between dismay and anxiety, the little girl's illness brings back to the surface in James and Mitsuko past pains that they both believed to be deeply buried...
