Hello, Grave Blackburn, National World's Politics Editor here from another sunny
00:04
but chilly Westminster. You might love to see my breath as I am speaking.
00:08
It's another big day for Rishi Sunak and the government today as his Rwanda Bill comes back
00:13
to the House of Commons for its committee stage. This is the Bill in which Parliament would in
00:18
theory declare that Rwanda is a safe country for asylum seekers to be sent and Sunak hopes
00:25
that this will mean that the Supreme Court's previous decision that this policy was unlawful
00:31
will effectively no longer be the case. So the committee stage is where MPs get the chance to
00:40
put forward amendments to the Bill and then tomorrow it's likely that MPs will vote on it
00:47
for the third time as part of the third reading. It's a really tricky day for Sunak as he's kind
00:55
of being caught up in a bit of a pincer movement. Labour have put forward amendments against the
00:58
Bill, some of the left-wing side of the Conservatives have as well but the ones to
01:04
watch out for are the ones put forward today by Bill Cash and Robert Jenrick, two of the more
01:09
right-wing MPs in the Conservative Party. They want Rishi Sunak to harden up this Bill and make
01:14
it harder for asylum seekers to put forward legal challenges against being deported to Rwanda. Now
01:20
the government says that they believe this Bill is as strong as it can be and they say if it goes
01:26
any further there's a danger that the Rwandan government might pull out of it. Now I've just
01:33
been in a briefing with Number 10 about this and they say that Rishi Sunak today is still talking
01:40
to MPs, potential rebel MPs, to try and get them on the side. So it shows that the government is
01:47
still not entirely confident with passing this Bill. We'll find out today and tomorrow how that
01:52
goes. You can find all the details about how you MP vote on the politics section of the National
01:57
World website.
