00:00 How many of you guys got dreams of playing in the NBA?
00:03 I do feel like I've been out of the door my whole life.
00:05 Hawkins takes it to the bench. How about Jordan Hawkins?
00:09 He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland.
00:11 You're looking at the best shooter in the draft.
00:13 His ability to get hot at virtually any given time was unmatched in college basketball.
00:18 He works his hair off every day because he has goals of making it to the highest level.
00:22 I learned a lot. I learned that it's hard to guard Devin Booker.
00:25 Hawkins played sick with a stomach bug.
00:28 You weren't feeling well and yet you made it. How did you pull it off?
00:32 I got a heart of a lion. I couldn't sit this one. That was the final four, man.
00:36 There you go.
00:38 Oh!
00:40 Definitely got a hanging spot in the draft.
00:49 I've been waiting for this my whole life.
00:57 I mean, everybody's got that chip on their shoulder.
01:01 Everybody's feel like they got something to prove.
01:03 I do feel like I've been underdog my whole life. I'd rather be the underdog.
01:07 That makes you work harder. I think that helped me drive my basketball.
01:10 The only moment I realized I could make it to the league is where I, like my sophomore year in high school,
01:19 where I grew up to like 6'5". I started jumping. Jumping over everybody, started shooting.
01:24 I had a chance to go to Dematha where a lot of pros come out of there.
01:28 I was playing against pros early, so.
01:30 He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland.
01:33 Gatorade Player of the Year. Dematha Player of the Year.
01:36 He works his tail off every day. It doesn't matter who's in here.
01:39 Because he has goals of making it to the highest level.
01:42 People will tell you I'm a sharp shooter. I can shoot from anywhere. I'm a movement shooter.
01:46 A guy that can space the floor.
01:47 Nothing has been given to me. It's a process.
01:50 You definitely got to earn your spot in the draft.
01:53 It's nothing new to me. Everybody's coming for your head.
01:56 It's working hard having that chip on your shoulder.
01:59 It's like you have something to prove. You just keep working hard.
02:02 You got a chance to guard Devin Booker and other NBA guards at the CB3 Elite Guard Camp.
02:09 How do you think that experience was helpful for preparing for the league?
02:13 Yeah, I learned a lot. I learned that it was hard to guard Devin Booker.
02:17 I'm going to have to get used to it. Going to guard guys like that every night.
02:21 It was an early experience of that. It was very, very, very helpful.
02:25 I learned a lot from Chris.
02:27 We built a relationship after the camp and Devin. I can call those guys anytime.
02:33 As soon as the game stopped playing, I started asking questions.
02:36 I started picking their brains.
02:37 Just be who you are as an Oukar.
02:39 Play your game. Play the game that got you wherever you are.
02:42 You can overcome anything like I did.
02:46 [The U.S. Open]
02:48 We've got some news here to report that involves UConn star player Hawkins.
02:57 He's had a stomach flu this week. Trace, what's the latest?
03:00 That's right. Jordan Hawkins came down with a stomach bug on Thursday night.
03:04 He did not practice on Friday. He was limited in shoot-around this morning.
03:09 I was told he is good to go. He will start.
03:12 But how effective he will be remains to be seen.
03:15 What happened in that moment and how did you overcome it?
03:19 I had some bad food, I guess.
03:22 I got sick. I was sick during that night.
03:26 I knew I was going to play. I wasn't going to miss that game for anything.
03:30 So that little sickness I had wasn't going to stop nothing.
03:38 Huskies blowing out all their opponents to get here.
03:41 And they open up with an outside shot.
03:44 Oh, that looks good. How about that?
03:47 Questionable just a day ago.
03:49 And comes right out and rips the nets.
03:52 You weren't feeling well and yet you made it onto this court.
03:56 Had major contributions. How did you pull it off?
03:59 Heart of a lion. I got a heart of a lion.
04:01 I love my teammates to death. Had to be there for my guys and I'm just so happy.
04:05 I couldn't sit this one out. It's the final four, man. I don't care how I was feeling.
04:09 It was just another obstacle I had to overcome.
04:12 It was tough as I had been growing up.
04:14 It had to be mentally tough to have my dad raise me.
04:17 My parents sacrificed a lot for me.
04:19 Driving me to AAU summer, to work out, to spend countless hours with me in the gym.
04:23 I got my license late too, so they would drive me everywhere.
04:26 All credit to them that I came this far.
04:29 I love them to death.
04:31 How many of you guys have been playing in the NBA?
04:35 Start of the year.
04:37 I was in the AAU position at one, so I was the one playing in the NBA.
04:40 Y'all probably better than me. I was at that age. I wouldn't take it.
04:44 That basketball 2 series, I was a little bit forced into it, but as I look at it now.
04:48 Listen to your parents. They know what's best for you.
04:50 They know what's best for you. It sounds, no, it seems like they own your butt.
04:54 They won't leave you alone. They're annoying. You hate them right now.
04:57 But I promise you, it pays off in the long run.
04:59 People that inspire me to have these dreams are my parents, for sure.
05:03 They work hard every single day, 7-8 hours a day.
05:06 I just wanted to give back to them.
05:08 So at what age did Jordan start playing basketball?
05:12 Do you remember at what point you felt that there might be a future in this for him?
05:17 I mean, well, as soon as he was born, his dad tried to put a ball in his hand.
05:23 But I would say the earliest, probably elementary school.
05:26 And then, you know, just continued on from there.
05:29 Growing up, my favorite NBA player was Kobe and KD.
05:32 KD's my favorite player because he's from Maryland.
05:35 Gives kids like me back in Maryland a lot of hope.
05:37 And Kobe. Kobe's just Kobe. Like, everybody loves Kobe.
05:40 So what does it feel like to watch Jordan play and have the success that he has?
05:45 I always tell him, every reward that you're receiving now is because you deserve it.
05:50 All the glitz and the glamour that people are seeing now is because he worked hard to get it.
05:55 So, I mean, it's a blessing to watch him on this platform.
05:59 I mean, my husband talked about it all his life, just where he's going to be.
06:02 And for us to actually be here at this moment is amazing.
06:06 The love for the game. I had the love for the game and passion for the game.
06:11 I just wanted to transfer it to Jordan. And it did.
06:16 It worked out pretty good.
06:19 [Music]
06:32 We're here for the 2023 NBA Draft. Getting ready for it.
06:37 Excited for it. Looking forward to what lies ahead.
06:40 I'm just looking at it as the next step, the next challenge in my basketball career.
06:43 I've been waiting for this my whole life. So Thursday, it'll probably start to kick in.
06:48 Man, I think I'm going to be the best dresser at the draft.
06:51 I mean, I've been telling people there might be some good suits out there, but I don't think anybody's going to match mine.
06:56 Okay, you ready for the big reveal?
07:00 I'm going to tell her if she wants me to test dress.
07:02 That's too sharp.
07:04 I mean, the belt, though, is like, just really, is going to be different.
07:09 Isn't this so good?
07:11 And then the shoes.
07:13 This is so classic but modern, you know?
07:18 And that was all his idea. He's like, "I need the belt."
07:21 I like the belt.
07:23 The belt is awesome.
07:24 So you ready to try it on?
07:26 Yes, ma'am.
07:27 Let's do it.
07:28 [Music]
07:37 He's going to look amazing.
07:39 [Music]
07:42 Don't cry!
07:44 I think my parents are far more excited than me.
07:47 I mean, I'm excited, but they know how hard I've been working for this, and they know the sacrifice I put into this.
07:52 This is like a dream come true for them, too, seeing their son pursue their dream.
07:56 You might be the best dresser.
07:58 Not mine. No, we're manifesting.
08:00 Do you mind if Ashley and I get a picture with it?
08:03 Sure.
08:04 This is my 18th year doing the draft.
08:07 Oh, my gosh.
08:09 You are in the path of such importance.
08:11 Oh, my gosh.
08:12 Thank you.
08:15 Thank you.
08:16 [Music]
08:19 How are you keeping the stress levels low and staying balanced at this time right now?
08:23 I'm keeping the stress levels low by, like, just being myself.
08:26 Just keeping the people close to me I grew up with, like my mom, my dad.
08:30 I always keep them close to me.
08:31 They remind me that I'm just a regular guy.
08:33 What are some ways that Jordan is prioritizing greatness or cutting out distraction in these pre-draft days?
08:39 I think, you know, just staying to himself, you know, mostly, you know, not letting anybody influence him.
08:46 You know, just staying focused and realizing that what you're about to walk into is much bigger than hanging out with your friends or, you know.
08:54 He just wants to play basketball.
08:56 So I don't care if I'm there hanging out.
08:58 I don't care about no clubs.
08:59 I don't care about no parties.
09:00 I've never been him.
09:02 I don't think it's going to be him ever.
09:04 It's just not him.
09:05 [Music]
09:08 It's been the work.
09:09 When the lights are not on, it's definitely important.
09:11 But when the lights come on, definitely got to turn on the switch.
09:14 [Music]
09:24 We try to sharpen all aspects of his game.
09:27 Jordan's strengths and weaknesses.
09:29 There was a lot of say kind of this year that he was just a shooter.
09:32 He didn't really shoot off the bounce a lot.
09:34 So now we're trying to incorporate a lot of, you know, him shooting off the bounce, him finishing with contact because he's a smaller player.
09:40 Just a lot of work.
09:42 What I'm working on the most, if I can translate in the league, is probably working on my body.
09:46 Guys are a lot thicker, a lot stronger.
09:48 So definitely got to get stronger.
09:50 Just working on my all-around game, all-around scoring.
09:52 Showing people what I'm afraid of and scoring.
09:54 My goal as a rookie is just to get on the floor.
09:58 Just help the win.
09:59 Try to lead this team to the playoffs or help them get to the playoffs as much as I can.
10:03 No, I definitely think Jordan is ready for the NBA.
10:06 I think he's going to step in and play a lot of minutes right away.
10:09 You can't really find a lot of really good shooting in the NBA the way he is coming in as a really good shooter.
10:15 You know, most players come in and they've got to get better at that aspect of the game.
10:18 Jordan has to get a little bit stronger.
10:20 But the fact that he can shoot it so well will help him tremendously.
10:23 [MUSIC]
10:31 What I bring to the NBA is my shooting, for sure.
10:33 I think I'm one of the best shooters in the draft, if not the best.
10:35 My conditioning, just not getting tired, especially with the way my play style is.
10:39 I'm a movement shooter, so I run all over the place.
10:42 So I've got to be well-conditioned.
10:43 I think that's how I separate myself from other people.
10:45 [MUSIC]
10:54 Jordan's a worker, man.
10:55 So he loves to be in the gym.
10:56 He's a gym rat.
10:57 He works out sometimes two, three times a day.
10:59 A lot of reps.
11:00 I just think he needs to continue working and doing what got him to the NBA.
11:04 Just reps, man.
11:05 Just work.
11:06 [MUSIC]
11:10 Now, if you had to say one thing, one advice to Jordan straight into the camera,
11:14 what would you tell Jordan?
11:17 Go kick some ass.
11:19 [MUSIC]
11:22 It is finally here, the 2023 NBA draft.
11:26 Lives will be changed tonight in Brooklyn, New York.
11:32 Jordan Hawkins out of UConn.
11:35 I think Jordan has an unbelievable upside, even beyond who he is right now.
11:38 One of the best movement shooters,
11:40 a guy who can do it at full speed at a level that you haven't seen in college.
11:44 You're looking at the best shooter in the draft.
11:46 The way that he runs off screens as he leads,
11:48 and his ability to set his feet when he comes off of a pin down
11:51 is unlike anybody else in this draft class.
11:53 His ability to get hot at virtually any given time for UConn
11:57 on that run to the national championship was unmatched in college basketball.
12:01 He's a winner.
12:02 I mean, he knows what it takes when he's in those moments.
12:04 Flawless release, real quick, can make contested threes.
12:07 I mean, the guy lit it up all year.
12:09 He was arguably UConn's best player, and without him, they'd win no championship.
12:13 Yeah, yeah, he has a championship pedigree going on to the NBA now.
12:17 [MUSIC]
12:20 Throughout the NBA draft process, there's usually a lot of uncertainty.
12:23 How are you as a family handling everything?
12:26 I pretty much don't think about it, you know what I mean?
12:29 I think Jordan has put in his work.
12:32 I think people know who he is right now.
12:35 This game speaks for itself.
12:36 I'm working my brain more about getting there, just preparing everybody,
12:40 you know, to make sure we're all ready for the moment.
12:43 But as far as worrying about where he's going to fall and all that,
12:46 I don't really think I do.
12:48 I mean, he's here for a reason.
12:50 It's a blessing.
12:51 So wherever he ends up, we blessed.
12:53 It doesn't matter.
12:54 Wherever he ends up, they're going to get a good kid.
12:56 [MUSIC]
12:58 When did you decide, if ever, that you wanted to be a Pro Hooper?
13:02 I mean, probably my whole life.
13:06 I probably just wanted to play the NBA.
13:09 Seeing the guys on TV just play every day, just dunk the basketball,
13:15 I just fell in love with it at a young age.
13:17 I knew I wanted to play at that stage.
13:20 [MUSIC]
13:23 With the 14th pick in the 2023 NBA draft,
13:27 the New Orleans Pelicans select Jordan Hawkins from the University of Connecticut.
13:33 [MUSIC]
13:35 What was going through my mind during that time was tears of joy.
13:38 The hard work I put in, me and my dad, all the hard days.
13:42 It was a really special moment for me and my family.
13:44 I didn't even know I was going to cry.
13:45 I see my mom's crying, I was like, "Damn, I might start crying now."
13:50 Draft night was crazy.
13:52 We don't know, it's a really long day.
13:53 You wake up at 8.
13:54 But it's a special day.
13:56 It's an experience with my family.
13:58 Who are you looking forward to playing against the most and why?
14:00 I want to play against CJ McCollum, my teammate.
14:03 I want to see how he plays, and definitely in practice.
14:06 But on the opposing team, probably KD.
14:08 I played on his AU team as well, so that would be pretty cool.
14:12 Pretty comfortable.
14:13 Where I want to be remembered for, if you bring up my name, is the winner.
14:16 I did everything for the city.
14:18 Leave the place, I came to a better place.
14:20 My ultimate goal in a lot of championships, be the best player I can be.
14:24 Hard work, a lot of dedication.
14:25 I just know that it all starts all over now.
14:28 [Music]
