During his recent retirement, Carmelo Anthony made a point to mention his son Kiyan as his successor and who will carry on his legacy within the basketball world. The 2025 recruit has made strides as an elite prospect within the high school ranks, and seems to be just scratching the surface of his potential. With the help and full time focus of his father, will he have what it takes to eclipse and even surpass his achievements? Only time will tell.

00:00 Like father, like son. Carmelo Anthony, a 10-time NBA All-Star, NBA Scoring Champion, and NCAA Champion just recently announced his retirement after 19 years in the NBA.
00:14 What a career. A legend to say the least. And although he may no longer be on the hardwood, he hopes his legacy will live on through his son, Kyan Anthony.
00:25 What's that saying? The apple doesn't fall far from the tree? Okay, it's tree, but three seemed like a better fit for this occasion.
00:34 Can Kyan make his father proud and achieve his goal Melo couldn't quite grab? An NBA Championship?
00:41 Carmelo Anthony is arguably one of the best college hoopers of all time.
00:46 After showing out in high school, Carmelo got his Division 1 shot with the Syracuse Orange, who was coached by legend Jim Boeheim at the time.
00:56 Melo only played one season at the college level before going to the league.
01:01 In his one season, the forward averaged 22.2 points and 10 rebounds, guiding his team to their first ever NCAA Championship.
01:11 In that championship game, Anthony dropped a cool 20 points and 10 rebounds against Kansas, after a 33-point outburst against the University of Texas in the Final Four.
01:23 At that point, he cemented himself as one of the best to ever do it at the college level. But could he translate his game to the pros?
01:32 And I'm sure we could skip that part because we definitely know he did.
01:37 Melo got drafted 3rd overall to the Denver Nuggets in 2003 NBA Draft, where he played for 7 full seasons, where he proved he belonged in the league.
01:48 He was then shipped to the New York Knicks, which is where Melo really cemented his name as one of the best scorers of all time.
01:56 Anthony was with the Knicks from 2011 to 2017, and the rest of his career, he hopped around until there was no more hopping to do.
02:06 He spent some time with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Houston Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, and ended his career with the LA Lakers,
02:14 even though fans were shooting for him to come finish it off with the Knicks.
02:18 At only 16 years old, Carmelo Anthony's son, Kion Anthony, has gained a lot of attention for his own basketball skill.
02:27 Let's start with his physical attributes. Kion Anthony is a 6'4" shooting guard, and remember, he's only 16 years old.
02:37 But what type of player is Kion Anthony? And does he have enough to follow in his father's footsteps?
02:45 Since spring, Anthony has blossomed and continued to shine not only as a scorer with deep range, but also as a playmaker in the stacked 2025 class.
02:56 Yeah, this is definitely Carmelo's son.
02:59 The organization Kion plays for is no other than his father's, Team Mellow, a youth basketball program focused on college recruitment.
03:09 Anthony is averaging 15.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
03:16 But we do see him struggle with efficiency, only making 37.6% of his field goals and 26.4% from three.
03:25 Even when Kion is seen having poor scoring nights, he leaves viewers impressed with his ability to create for others as he leads Team Mellow in assists, with 30 against only 10 turnovers.
03:39 His court vision and playmaking ability are beyond his years.
03:43 And let's not forget about his defense. Kion leads his team in steals with 12.
03:49 Even though he still has a couple years until college, Anthony has already garnered the attention of some major college programs.
03:57 Anthony has received offers from 11 Division 1 programs, with 5 of those coming within the last month.
04:05 Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, and Seton Hall are the most recent programs who added onto Kion's list.
04:14 But before those, he already received offers from Providence, UMass, Manhattan, Memphis, Bryant, George Mason, and the one who has everyone excited, Syracuse.
04:27 I mean, just imagine, a Syracuse legend's son suits up in orange to achieve what has only been achieved once in program history because of his father?
04:38 A chance at another national title.
04:41 Sounds like a storybook writing to me.
04:43 But then again, Kion might want to write his own story, his own school, his own path.
04:51 And no matter what he decides, Carmelo will be there cheering him on no matter what.
04:56 As of right now, Anthony, who attends Long Island Lutheran in Brooksville, New York, is considered a four-star prospect and ranks number 62 in the class of 2025.
05:08 But I'm sure we can expect that to rise in the future.
05:11 Ronnie James was also a four-star prospect who is now a five-star recruit.
05:16 Who's to say Kion can't achieve the same thing or maybe something even greater?
05:21 In Melo's retirement announcement video, he made it clear that Kion is next up.
05:27 He said, "My legacy, my son, it's in you."
05:31 He continued by saying, "I will forever continue through you because the time has come for you to carry this torch.
05:38 So chase your dream. Let nothing hold you back. Let nothing intervene.
05:43 My legacy, now and forever, lives on through you.
05:47 And I will always be proud of all that you do."
05:50 What do you think?
05:51 Is Kion just getting all of this hype because his dad is Carmelo Anthony?
05:56 Or is Kion really something special?
05:59 Will Kion follow his father's footsteps and take his talents to Syracuse and then the NBA?
06:06 Only time will tell.
