The Court of Appeal has ruled that the conversion of single mother Lo Siu Hong's three children
00:08
to Islam was unconstitutional. A three-member bench chaired by Justice Hadar Yassay Ismail
00:13
also struck down a provision in the Perlis State Enactment that allows for unilateral
00:18
conversion. Lo's children were unilaterally converted to Islam by their father in Perlis
00:24
in 2020. Subsequently, Lo took the matter to court, seeking a declaration that a provision
00:30
in the state enactment that allows a parent to unilaterally convert minor children was
00:35
unconstitutional. She also wanted a declaration that her twin daughters, age 15 and son, age
00:42
12, were still Hindus. Last May, the High Court ruled that her children were still Muslims
00:49
despite being unilaterally converted. Lo then filed an appeal. Today, the Court of Appeal
00:56
ruled that the High Court judge erred in law by not adhering to the federal court's 2018
01:01
ruling in the Indira Gandhi case. In Indira's case, the Apex Court unanimously ruled that
01:08
converting children to a different religion required the consent of both parents, even
01:13
if one parent converted to Islam. Hadar Yassay said in Lo's case, she did not consent to
01:18
her children's conversion to Islam. Amira Huda, FMT News.
