Paulo Salles Fatal Crash @ Rally Dos Sertões 2000 (Aftermath)

Brazilian racer Paulo Salles, 41, was killed on Saturday, 15 July 2000, during VIII Rally Internacional dos Sertões. During the displacement stage between Cabeceira da Mata and Alto Paraíso when his Troller #168 collided with a truck which stopped on the road. Salles was transported to Hospital de Base de Brasília but he was declared dead on arrival, victim of fractured skull. His co-driver Antonio Vadson Alencar suffered serious injuries.

Paulo Salles won the previous Rally dos Sertões as co-driver to Riamburgo Ximenes however in 2000 he participated first time in rally as driver. Known as "Betão", he was chief mechanic for the Troller team during the 2000 Dakar Rally. Salles was an avid supporter of football club Fortaleza and the next match between Fortaleza and Ceará in the Ceará Football Championship was started from a minute of silence in memory of the deceased driver. Paulo Salles was buried at Parque da Paz in Fortaleza.

Paulo Salles's death became the first competitor fatality in Rally dos Sertões. Two years before, an unnamed driver of the organization committee lost his life in an accident.
