00:00 Welcome to the Rich Rabbit. In a few minutes you'll be watching a short
00:05 documentary video about the life of Elon Musk, the world's most innovative
00:10 billionaire. Elon is a multi-talented and focused man, a front line for many
00:16 groundbreaking inventions and technologies that shook the world. He is
00:23 an inventor, astute businessman and investor in various industries. He is a
00:30 stakeholder in multiple business ventures, a man of high reputation and
00:34 standing in the science and space technology industry. In one of his
00:41 statements he said he would only be happy when humans on earth have
00:46 colonized and escaped Mars. This is quite thrilling indeed. If you've seen the
00:52 movie Iron Man, you'll see that Elon Musk is like Tony Stark in real life. He has
00:59 produced space rockets, electric cars, solar batteries and robots earning him
01:05 billions. He also displayed his political prowess and niche as an industry leader
01:12 when he assumed the role of an advisor in President Donald Trump's
01:17 administration. In this video we will discuss Elon's entire managerial and
01:23 entrepreneurial career in detail. And this is an exciting piece as you will
01:29 learn from one of the most charismatic leaders in the science and technology
01:34 industry. If you enjoyed this short documentary film please give us a thumbs
01:39 up and subscribe to our Channel. Born in Pretoria South Africa on June 28, 1971
01:48 Elon Musk is the oldest of three children with his brother Kimball and
01:53 sister Tosca. Elon's father Errol was a wealthy South African engineer and the
01:59 mother May was a Canadian nutritionist, model and the oldest star for a cover
02:04 girl campaign. As a child Elon was one of the kids we can classify as unique. He
02:13 was always so consumed in his inventions and daydreams that his parents and
02:18 doctors had a test done to check his hearing abilities. In his father's
02:23 opinion Elon was a thinker who often kept to himself. In a gathering with lots
02:29 of people enjoying a great party you'll notice Elon in the host's library
02:34 reading their books and going through their magazines. When Elon Musk was 10
02:40 his parents got divorced. Elon lived with his father following his parents divorce
02:46 in 1979. He soon developed an interest in computers and electronic devices
02:53 teaching himself programming and related things. By the time he was 12 he
02:59 created a game called Blaster, his first software which he later sold for $500.
03:05 Not bad for a 12 year old. Elon was introverted and short. His early years
03:13 were lonely and traumatizing as he was bullied by his peers. He later learned to
03:19 defend himself using wrestling and karate. Elon attended the Watercliff
03:25 House Preparatory School and later graduated from Pretoria Boys High School
03:30 in Pretoria, South Africa. He moved to Canada in 1989 to attend Queen's
03:38 University in Kingston, Ontario and skipped compulsory service in the South
03:43 African military. There Elon attained Canadian citizenship in the same year
03:49 because he saw it as an avenue to get American citizenship through his mother.
03:55 Elon later left Canada after two years to the University of Pennsylvania where
04:01 he studied two majors physics and business. He graduated with a degree in
04:06 economics and went on to acquire another bachelor's degree in physics. When Elon
04:12 left Pennsylvania he moved to Stanford University, California pursuing a PhD in
04:18 energy physics. This transition was timely as this was the period of the
04:23 Internet boom. He dropped out of Stanford to join the Internet boom thereby
04:30 launching his first web software company in 1995 called Zip2 Corporation. He
04:37 established Zip2 with the help of his brother Kimball which he later sold. Elon
04:43 then gained American citizenship in 2002. He used the money he got from selling
04:49 Zip2 to develop X.com. This was later merged with another company Confinity
04:55 which then gave birth to the present PayPal. Now let's take a look at how many
05:02 businesses Elon formed. As we've discussed already Zip2 Corporation was
05:10 his first company which Elon started with his brother Kimball Musk in 1995. It
05:16 was designed as an online city guide that provided content for newspapers
05:21 such as the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. In 1999 Zip2 was bought by a
05:28 division of Compact Computer Corporation for 307 million dollars cash value and
05:34 34 million dollars in stocks. Elon and his brother used the money received from
05:41 the sale of their company to develop X.com in 1999. It was an online payment
05:49 financial services company. The acquisition of X.com in the following
05:54 year resulted in the formation of PayPal we all know today. In 2002 Elon became a
06:02 billionaire when eBay acquired PayPal for the sum of 1.5 billion dollars in stock.
06:08 Before the sale Elon owned 11% of shares in PayPal. In 2002 Elon founded the SpaceX
06:19 or Space Exploration Technologies Corporation. The SpaceX was developed to
06:25 build a spacecraft for commercial space travel. The company became well
06:30 established by 2008 and was awarded a contract by NASA to be in charge of
06:37 cargo transport for an international space station. This was to handle
06:42 astronaut transport later in the future and replace NASA's space shuttles. Since
06:47 then SpaceX has been on many space related projects and has slowly become a
06:53 household name. It contracts with private businesses and the United States
06:58 government to get satellites to orbit and other spacecraft. On May 22, 2012
07:05 history was made when SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket unmanned into space.
07:12 The missile was sent to the International Space Station carrying
07:16 1,000 pounds of supplies for the astronauts situated there. This marked
07:22 the first time spacecraft were launched into the International Space Station by
07:27 a private company. Elon was so ecstatic during the launch that he compared it to
07:32 winning the Super Bowl. In December 2013 another Falcon 9 rocket carried a
07:39 satellite successfully to geosynchronous transfer orbit. This represents the point
07:45 where the spacecraft would lock into an orbital path matching the Earth's
07:49 rotation. In February 2015 another Falcon 9 was launched. It was fixed with the
07:58 Deep Space Climate Observatory satellite with specialized programming to
08:02 observe the Sun's extreme emissions as it impacts the power grids and Earth
08:07 communications systems. In March 2017 SpaceX successfully tested flight Falcon
08:16 9 rocket landing made from reusable parts, a development that paved the way
08:21 for more affordable space travel. February 2018 recorded another milestone
08:28 moment with a successful test launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket. The Falcon Heavy
08:34 rocket designed with additional Falcon 9 boosters can carry mammoth payloads into
08:40 orbit and come handy for deep space missions. In July 2018 SpaceX successfully
08:48 landed the new Block 5 Falcon rocket which settled on a drone ship less than
08:53 nine minutes after takeoff. SpaceX hit another milestone as it launched its
08:58 ninth Starlink mission carrying three sky sats from the planet and 58 Starlink
09:04 satellites. This Starlink satellite network enables accessibility of
09:10 broadband services to rural areas, boosting competition in densely
09:15 populated areas. Tesla started in July 2003. In February next year Elon Musk
09:24 joined the company as the chairman board of directors after conducting a series A
09:28 investment round which he led. Elon became more active in its activities and
09:34 was a significant contributor to the Tesla Roadster design. In 2008 he rose to
09:40 the position of CEO and product architect which he holds to this day. At
09:47 this point Elon Musk became the CEO of two companies Tesla and SpaceX and has
09:54 made tremendous achievements since then. Under his leadership Tesla has evolved
09:59 to being a world-class invention and not just your regular car company. The
10:04 stylish Tesla cars are mostly electric vehicles and they own the world's
10:09 largest battery plant. They have built other power storage devices like the
10:15 utility grade power system and the home Tesla Powerwall. Tesla owns Solar City
10:21 and produces solar roof tiles and solar panels. In 2018 Tesla announced a
10:28 controversial 2.6 billion dollar payment for Elon Musk. Elon's continued effort in
10:35 promoting and advancing products and sustainable energy for a broader
10:40 consumer population earned a solid 2.6 billion dollar deal in 2018 in
10:46 combination with solar energy companies and his electric cars. His motor company
10:52 Tesla Motors Inc announced an all-stock purchase of Solar City Corporation. This
10:58 was a company Elon co-founded with his cousins and he is a significant
11:02 shareholder in the company. A combination of the two companies solar and storage
11:08 is outstanding as a single entity both Tesla and Solar City can fully integrate
11:14 a commercial residential and grid scale product to enhance energy generation
11:20 storage and consumption. The boring company like other business ventures
11:25 owned by Elon is more than just a business concept. This business idea came
11:31 to Elon while he was struck in traffic in Los Angeles in December 2016. His plan
11:37 was about underground tunnels that helped to ease traffic in the infamous
11:42 LA highway system. In January 2017 he made a move to get tunnel boring
11:48 machines used to excavate tunnels. Apart from cars and pedestrians Elon intends
11:55 to use the tunnels from the boring company to lift Hyperloop vehicles.
12:00 Another futuristic business idea of Elon Musk. Hyperloop refers to a concept of
12:06 high-speed transit systems whereby cars runs in pressurized tubes. The Hyperloop
12:12 and tunnels are both under construction in various areas of the United States
12:17 either physically or conceptually. In August 2013 Elon Musk brought about a
12:24 concept that can be used in the form of a new transportation called Hyperloop
12:29 which is a type of innovation that will bring about commuting major cities while
12:34 trying as much as possible to cut the traveling time. This is entirely
12:39 resistant to weather and it is powered by renewable energy. The Hyperloop will
12:45 push the riders in paths via a network of tubes that are low pressure at a
12:50 speed of more than 700 miles per hour. Elon also noted that the Hyperloop could
12:56 take seven to ten years to be built and even ready for use. He announced that the
13:03 use of Hyperloop will be safer than trains or planes and this will cost an
13:07 estimate of six billion dollars which is about the cost of the rail system that
13:13 has been designed by the state of California. However this concept brought
13:17 about by Elon has drawn lots of skepticism even though he only sought to
13:22 encourage the growth of the idea. The maiden Hyperloop pod competition was
13:28 done in the SpaceX facility in January 2017. In November 2017 after Chicago
13:37 Mayor Rahm Emanuel talked about proposals to operate and build high
13:41 speed rails that would transport people from O'Hare Airport to downtown Chicago
13:46 in less than 20 minutes, Elon tweeted that he was in an all competition with
13:51 the Boring Company. Elon mentioned that the idea of the Chicago Loop would be
13:56 very different from his Hyperloop. The relatively short distance will not
14:01 require the need for drawing the vacuum to reduce air friction. Elon Musk also
14:06 pursued an interest in artificial intelligence and he became the co-chair
14:11 of the nonprofit Open AI. The company was launched in late 2015 with the mission
14:18 of making digital intelligence advanced enough to benefit everyone. In 2017 it
14:24 was discovered that Elon was backing a venture known as Neuralink which is
14:29 designed to create devices that can be planted into the human brains which will
14:34 help people combine with software. Elon recently announced his decision to step
14:40 down from the board of Open AI in February 2018 to evade any impending
14:46 conflicts of interest with Tesla which has made signs of progress in the
14:50 artificial intelligence field for his self-driving car technology. He also
14:56 warned AI of Tesla's massive investment in self-driving car technology. In
15:02 September 2017 Elon released an updated design for his Big Falcon rocket or BFR,
15:09 a 31 engine behemoth capped by a spaceship with a capacity to carry 100
15:15 people or more. He revealed his company's plan to unwheel the first cargo
15:20 missions to Mars with the plan to send a vehicle in 2022 as part of his
15:25 all-encompassing goal of inhabiting the red planet. In April 2018 SpaceX announced
15:33 that it would build a facility at the Los Angeles port to assemble and house
15:37 the BFR. The port facility offered an ideal location for SpaceX so that its
15:44 gargantuan rocket will only be movable by surge or ship when completed. Elon
15:50 Musk made another impression on the market following the unveiling of the
15:54 Tesla Semi and Roadster. The output of the Semi truck was supposed to begin in
16:00 2019 but this was delayed. It boasts a 500 miles range and batteries and motors
16:08 designed to last up to 1 million miles. The Tesla Semi is an electrical battery
16:14 powered semi truck class 8 being developed by Tesla Inc. The company
16:19 unveiled two vehicles in 2021 with production scheduled for the same year.
16:24 The Semi truck is expected to be on 500 miles range on full charge with its new
16:30 batteries that can run as long as 400 miles after being charged in 30 minutes
16:36 with solar power, the Tesla Mega Charger station. This will also have Tesla
16:42 autopilot for semi-autonomous highway driving. The Semi truck is stipulated to
16:47 cost 20 cent per miles less than using a diesel truck when charged at a mega
16:52 charger. If the Semi is not loaded it eliminates the costs of operating it.
16:58 There are beliefs that with Tesla breaking the 100 billion dollar market
17:03 level Elon Musk may just be the world's first trillionaire. At the time this
17:09 video is produced his net worth is estimated at 38.8 billion dollars and he
17:15 is ranked 31st on the Forbes list of the world's richest billionaires. Also he is
17:22 recognized globally as the longest-serving CEO of an automotive
17:26 manufacturer. Elon Musk has contributed immensely to science, technology and
17:31 artificial intelligence and he's often seen as a divisive figure probably due
17:38 to his knack of speaking his mind frankly. Elon Musk is quite different
17:42 unlike most CEOs who meticulously choose their words to avoid making
17:47 controversial statements. Frequently he's not cautious and often speaks his mind
17:53 never minding the consequences he has to deal with later.
17:57 Elon has successfully courted devotion and controversy from his public
18:02 statements. The way Elon conducts himself in the future will determine the
18:08 effectiveness of his leadership role in steering his company to rise above his
18:12 competitors. Elon's bluntness has won him many fans and endeared him to customers
18:20 who find him more approachable than other famous executives. But on the other
18:25 hand some analysts and investors are also frustrated with this as they
18:30 perceive him to be temperamental and reckless. Here are 11 inspirational quotes
18:37 from Elon Musk. Persistence is essential. You should not give up unless you are
18:44 forced to give up. When something is important enough you do it even if the
18:50 odds are not in your favor. There have to be reasons that you get up in the morning
18:56 and you want to live. Why do you want to live? What's the point? What inspires you?
19:02 What do you love about the future? If the future does not include being out there
19:08 among the stars and being a multi-planet species I find that incredibly
19:15 depressing. When Henry Ford made cheap reliable cars people said now what's
19:21 wrong with a horse? That was a huge bet he made and it worked. It's okay to have
19:28 your eggs in one basket as long as you control what happens to that basket. The
19:33 first step is to establish that something is possible. Then the
19:38 probability will occur. If you get up in the morning and think the future is
19:44 going to be better it is a bright day. Otherwise it's not. I could either watch
19:52 it happen or be a part of it. I think ordinary people can choose to be
19:58 extraordinary. If you go back a few hundred years what we take for granted
20:04 today would seem like magic. Being able to talk to people over long distances,
20:09 transmit images, flying and access vast amounts of data like an Oracle. These are
20:16 all things that would have been considered magic a few hundred years ago.
20:22 To some Elon Musk is seen as an inventor who has contributed a lot to our society
20:28 in several ways. Elon Musk has been a source of inspiration to many aspiring
20:34 scientists and innovators as they have a lot to learn from him. This film was
20:40 produced to show how Musk rose from a humble background, bullied in school and
20:46 lived with his separated parents to attain the zenith of his career. Despite
20:53 the limiting challenges Elon Musk persisted until he achieved success. Elon
21:00 Musk isn't perfect and he is unapologetic about it but he remains
21:06 true to himself and keeps striving to be the best. The world is filled with great
21:12 men and women who have all impacted the world through different innovations and
21:16 service to humanity. We can all agree that Elon Musk's story and achievement is
21:23 something to look forward to achieving. We hope you have learned a few lessons
21:27 from the brilliant life of Elon Musk and taken some positives from this video. Let
21:33 us all make a promise to never give up on our goals. Cheers!
