00:02 City streets and business hubs that used to be packed with people are now quieter than anyone could have imagined.

00:13 Places built to accommodate thousands have become virtual ghost towns as locals remain at home.

00:27 Rwanda, the country renowned as the land of a thousand hills, is characterized by its fast development and thriving economy.

00:35 The capital city, Kigali, impresses all with its many sights and delights.

00:41 Today, with 36 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus pandemic, all this is put at risk.

00:52 On Saturday, 14 March 2020, Rwanda announced the first confirmed case of the coronavirus.

00:58 The government issued a stay-at-home order effective on Saturday midnight, prohibiting all public and private gatherings

01:05 as well as the lockdown of the country's borders for the next two weeks.

01:09 Essential personal activities such as obtaining essential goods and services,

01:14 such as seeking medical attention or reporting to a job at an essential business were all exempt from the restriction.

01:21 A temporary ban was put on non-essential travel between different cities and districts across the country

01:27 while all employees in the public and private sectors work from home.

01:31 Several other preventive measures were issued, whereby schools, places of worship, conferences and other events were suspended.

01:39 All these precautionary measures were put into place to protect Rwandans amidst this novel pandemic.

01:46 We do not know just how much the coronavirus is going to cost the world, but one thing is for sure,

01:51 it is forcing us to take a deeper look and possibly rethink our way of life.
